Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
A Folding Wingtip?! Is it safe? 777X wing explained. WHY and HOW?! | by Captain Joe
Dear friends and followers welcome back to my channel and lovely greetings from the Cargolux maintenance hangar, in the background the beautiful 747 - but we are not going to looking at 747 today, instead we’ll talk about the plane which is most likely going revolutionize aviation industry, the brand new Boeing 777 X specifically focusing on the foldable wingtips!
To be fair this isn’t the first time we have seen this in aviation, foldable wings and wingtips are very common among fighter jets to make more space on aircraft carriers but she will be the first commercial plane able to fold her wingtips. We'll be focusing on how does it work, what the pilots have to do to, is it safe and reliable, and more importantly, why is it suddenly a new feature on today’s passenger aircraft?
Let's fold away and let's get started!
I'm sure many of you have seen the recent take-off and landing of Boeings new triple 777X at Paine field in Everett. Essentially, it’s the latest model of the triple 777, set to replace the classic triple seven which has been around since 1994, whilst competing with Airbus’ equivalent aircraft, the A350-900 and 1000.
Visually there are a number of big changes we are seeing on this aircraft and besides those absolutely humongous engines, the other significant difference are the foldable wingtips.
At the tip of these gigantic 777x carbon fibre wings, we find the folding wingtip. Once the aircraft is powered up the hydraulic actuators are able to rotate the tip from the taxi position to the inflight position. Once the wingtips are in place they are locked in by an electrical locking mechanism which holds the tips in place during flight.
Now, this is just an assumption of mine but from a technical standpoint, I'm pretty sure that the electrical lock is connected to the "wheels on ground sensor", meaning the wingtips can not fold upwards during flight and secondly no electrical power is needed to hold them in place in case there is some kind of electrical power loss in flight. And a similar principle for the hydraulic actuator, you need hydraulic pressure to fold it upwards and little to no pressure to keep them extended in case of a hydraulic issue. Compare it to the landing gear, hydraulic pressure to keep it up, but no pressure needed to extend it, making the system independent.
Also the leading edge of the foldable wingtip is electrically heated to prevent ice from accumulating and is turned on with the wing anti-ice switch on the overhead panel.
So what's new for the pilots.
Well, there will be a new switch added to the overhead panel and a little animation of the wingtips will be shown on the upper EICAS display.
So as the pilot's taxi towards the holding point, being clear of any obstacles, they place the Wingtip switch from folded to extended.
This action is then cross-checked on the EICAS displaying the tips in transit, from folded to extended, whilst lining up on the runway.
Now the master warning will go off and the "Take-Off configuration“- warning will be displayed in red if the pilots advance the thurst levers for take-off whilst the wingtips are still in transit. It's the same warning you would get in case of incorrect take-off flap setting for example.
Upon landing, the wingtips automatically fold upwards once the groundspeed is less then 50kts. Should there be a malfunction during the folding procedure it will be relayed to the pilots via the master caution light and audible tone.
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

@BrySkye
@BrySkye 4 жыл бұрын
Oh they did. To the extent that the media at the time made such a thing possible. Air France Flight 296 crashed in 1988. No social media, no 24 hour news coverage, the internet in the earliest stages of public use. I remember one American documentary in-particular which opened with "This is the most advanced passenger aircraft in the world, flown by a computer." upon which they promptly show it flying into the trees. Also the conspiracy theories that the black boxes were swapped after the crash, etc. The A300 came under pretty damn intense scrutiny after American Airlines Flight 587 crashed as well, that led to a big spike of "If it ain't Boeing, I ain't going." responses. Had that happened just a few years later, it would have been far more intense as well (though it ultimately turned out the tail had, in fact, exceeded it's maximum load limit).

I've seen them at an altitude of about 6 foot, taxiing with the other (GA) traffic. Obviously they don't need the length of the runway, but they follow it as well as having a much higher rate of climb. Makes ATC a lot easier when everyone does the same thing. For landing, I've seen them come in again to 6 foot or so, following the runway and taxiway just like anyone else would. This was a small aerodrome. And I've just found a thread where someone was reminiscing about being in an LHR taxiway queue consisting of a 747, A380, him in a helicopter, then a 737 behind... Would be fun to see a video on this 😉

Helicopters do not approach airports vertically, or take off vertically, even though they are capable of doing so. They are flown with significant forward speed, just as fixed-wing aircraft do, following similar glide and departure slopes, so that they fit in with the other air traffic.

1st, why would the wingtips automatically retract, when they have to manually be deployed? That would lead the switch position disagreeing with that which it controls. 2nd, given the wings are the same length and obviously design of the older ones, it could conceivably fly with the wingtips raised, or even not present, of course with a sizeable performance hit.

@@randomgaming8616 That disabling electricity would cause the mechanism to auto deploy. If you disable electricity there's no power to the hydraulic control valves that operate the actuators and no way for the latches to activate. That's the reason the wingtips are isolated from system power during flight - without power they cannot move at all.

@@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts also in that list not only have they lumped together all the 747 varients up to 747-300 including freighter versions, but if you look at the crashes it includes in the list crashes from things like hijackings! It does not give a good idea at all in how safe the actual plane is because the crashes counted are not just crashes from a failure in the plane design or caused partly by a flaw in the design. For example it shows the concorde to be the worst designed plane in terms of safety when in fact it only had one fatal crash ever which was caused by debris on the runway where as for example the Mcdonald Douglas DC 10 had quite a few crashes caused by bad design (cargo door blowouts, uncontained engine explosions and more) and there was a big scandal about it as they were bribing and threatening people to keep quiet about the problems
