For people wondering why they do it: They do this to resemble the neck of a dragon, the history behind this was that a young lady went for a walk into the forest and fell in love with a dragon, the dragon later laid 3 eggs, out of the eggs hatched 3 tribes and one of the tribes was the tribe in the video, this tribe wanted to pay respects to their mother dragon and started to stretch their necks, this is now going out of tradition and only a few people still have the rings

No it doesn't, that's a myth. they hold their own necks up and can reach the skin below the brass easily. What it actually does is pushes the ribs and collar bone down. You might have a weak collar bone, but there is no reason their neck muscles should be weaker than anyone elses.
@musiew6834 жыл бұрын
Tanya Pace no? It weakens their neck muscles this was reported by the New York Times, the longer they wear it, the more coils they add and the more the neck muscles atrophy
@tanyapace78864 жыл бұрын
@@musiew683 I see my bad. I had read before that it doesnt weaken the muscles. The coils themselves can weigh as much as 20 pounds though, and they arent rigid, they fold over themselves and move. One could almost think that should make your neck muscles stronger because the women really dont rest their heads on the coils as much as it may seem. So now Im wondering if it is really muscle atrophy, or if the warping of the bones and tendons just prevents the muscles from being able to get as strong as they could.

It makes those tribal lip plates look sort of tame in comparison. But damn... I try to wonder how these people came up with these weird cultural customs. I guess since they didn't have tv, there wasn't much entertainment, so if they're not hunting and gathering or like farming, they probably just got bored and like started doing fucked up shit to their bodies.

From an outside and specifically from a westernized country, it's odd and seems cruel, but I feel like that's just me pushing my opinions and western societal norms onto them. The women aren't required to wear it though there are many women who have removed the coils completely and no longer wear them it's not like these women are forced to wear anything; they wear it to preserve their culture. This whole video is trying to make it look as if they would choose to preserve their culture. In reality all of them are gathered in a human zoo, shown to visitors. A Thai woman collects most of the money, they get no passports and are stuck their. The government even built a road for all the tourist buses through the jungle to them. These people a kept as slaves and at least one we've been talking too got severe depression because of that and tried to kill herself. This very misleading video of National Geographic is not helping that created illusion around their situation at all. Shame on you.
@ellepwnzstevedaily9 жыл бұрын
I'm honestly shocked at the shitty comments people have made about these women. I mean, I shouldn't be, but I am. Their brass coils also make them a target for robbery, and, oftentimes, the coils are the most expensive item the woman owns. While I don't support forcing an unwilling child into this, I still find the practice and dedication to their culture beautiful. I've seen a decent amount of documentaries about how rare, in comparison to the amount of coil-eligible women in the tribe, neck-coiling is becoming. Sure, the elders are sad about it, but they've always come off as understanding and supportive of whatever a young girl or older woman decides to do when it comes to whether to start the process or, once started, whether to continue it. People bring up the hygiene issue all the time, too, but there are plenty of documentaries showing how they wash their neck & coils regularly. Even when you see the older woman (who's been in MANY docs) removing rings that have been on for decades, the only thing you see is the darkness created by scar tissue, not actual dirt & grime. How is that darkness created by scar tissue any different than tattooing, stretching a piercing, or even branding/scarification? There have been FAR more detrimental 'fashions' practiced on women over the millennia (chief of which, of course, is foot binding), and westerners do all kinds of stupid shit to their body just coz...who are you to pass judgement on such a longstanding tradition that isn't forced on their people?
