As an answer to the title, all we have to do is look at the world around us. We’ll clearly see the answer. It’s even what drives, for example, things like the fashion, auto, or employment sectors. We live in a world that teaches hierarchy, ones worth being based on accomplishments (and material items and money being evidences of ones successes), and so forth. We need to look at the society (world system) and who runs it. The enemy runs the world system. People are socialized to be this way. That said, I’m order for those things to be in effect in a society the enemy plays on our human nature and basic needs such as belonging (we are social creatures), security, a need for purpose, and the like. There’s nothing wrong with wanting things for oneself but it’s when it turns into worship and coveting of these things when it becomes a problem.

With that, most of the time people are stunting in order to seem relevant. That’s in order, for example, to be in good standing with a peer group and not deal with social rejection. No one wants to feel left out.
