The 2B 1H combo was originally intended as handbuff. While MOTLK didn't have mixed rune cards, you were meant to use the unholy cards to gain corpses, which were then spent by the handbuff cards (malignant horror as well). Certain unholy cards were also good handbuff targets (swarmguard).

I definitely agree here. It feels now like they're printing rune combinations just for the sake of doing it, without fulfilling any purpose. Honestly, this also applies to most double rune cards printed last year - we've gotten Farm Hand, Helm of Humiliation and Cage Head locked behind double runes for no reason. All the while Threads of Despair and Helya only have 1 rune requirement. This shows that the rune system has already lost any purpose it should have served.

During March of the Lich King we got introduced to 3 rune decks, which were pretty restrictive and mixing and matching runes had no real benefit. Ever since then however we've been recieving cards that dont really fit any of those archetypes making three rune decks more and more obscure. Every expansion tries to introduce a new archetype with an arbitrary rune requirement, which only exists because all the cards in the new expansion that are meant to support that archetype are of this rune color - Cagehead Deathratthe package for FoL, Plagues for Titans and Excavate for Badlands. As a result no archetype can sustain itself and keep getting random cards wanting to create a new archetype and the old archetypes arent recieving any cards. We can see it with Plagues how the deck failed so miserably that the Frost rune requirement got removed and now the Plague package is just a small addition to any decks using 1 or 2 Unholy, because the archetype itself was not sustainable. And we're just not getting any triple rune cards at all because Team 5 doesnt want those deck apperently, despite inventing a class for them. It feels like they lied about every set having a differnt Rune focus because they did 5 expansions of Rainbow DK

The last legendary shows that they abandoned the rune system and now it is only for balance purposes, it is a matter of time before they remove it completely.

To be fair, DK's Sindragosa was also a Blood+Frost card, until they changed it to be a 1 Frost card. Which is understandable, but also kind of weird since this rune combo had the kind of cool *instantly destroy Frozen minions* gimmick going on , but they abandoned it almost as quickly as they started it.

Tbh it felt like a nerf because it couldn’t be discovered anymore by the 2 mana 2/3 blood rune minion, which was always a good pick for triple blood.

The major problem with the Rune system isn’t that mixing Runes are bad, but rather that there’s no reward for playing something other than pure or rainbow. Technically DK has up to 10 different combinations + Runeless, and yet there is no Legendary or support that has capitalise on this other than pure or rainbow. If we want BBU Handbuff DK to be playable, there needs cards with that Rune combo to justify playing non-rainbow variants. If we want to see what BBF or BFF to look like in the future, we _need_ to gain proper support to explore the possibility of what it could look like. The Rune system also allows for DK to have combinations be arguably broken but fair since you don’t want in other archetypes - and with the removal of Discovering triple runes - this should allow for Team 5 to push the power level of the system and still be fair since you’d need to play in that localisation of power level, making it easy to adjust the power level without needing the entire class. I’m a huge fan of DK and what the Rune system can bring to the table, but it’s really hard to justify the Rune system if they don’t actively try and push for Triple Rune combos that don’t exist yet.

Being generous, the intent of making Eliza BF might've been to force more creative deckbuilding, as making her UUU would quickly pigeonhole her into one specific build. In practice, though, it probably just locks you into Rainbow instead. (Personally I'm all for removing runes entirely and rebalancing individual cards as needed, though I'm not confident it'll happen.) Per the favorite card thing: Hard to pick one specifically, but I'm a huge fan of memey alt wincons. (C'Thun the Shattered, Rivendare Warrider, etc)

I completely agree with these takes. I think the rune system is really cool, but like you said in a previous video, it would take DK YEARS to have enough cards to support all the different rune types, and making DKs core set 3 times bigger than the other classes is the only way I can see that happening

Honestly i always thought the most interesting potential of the rune system are two-one rune combinations like UUF or BBU, but it pathetically seems like the only historically playable deck like that is plague dk with the frost rune, which is ironic when they thought to remove the frost runes from down with the ship + tomb pillager

Runes just need to be removed from deck building, but not deleted from the game I like the runes dictating the flavor and effects of cards, and having the runes lets you have separate tailored discover pools, but currently runes are just a massive restriction on deck building and experimenting with whacky card interactions Anything but rainbow now removes access to more cards than you gain access to, and it’s not even a good trade off in card quality most of the time

Played reno blood dk before nerf to discovering triple rune cards. Every game, if it got past turn 8, id use wyverns breath on their face for 4~5 turns in a row, while all their minions where frozen. There was no counter play at the time, the deck ran an absurd amount of discovery, and specific discovery (spells that cost 5 or more), so it was super consistent. It was also one of the best control decks at the time, because triple blood was very good at control and reno+zephrys where very good at stalling.

My favorite card ever is stitched tracked from knights of the frozen trone. It has my favorite voice line in the game, and the battlecry felt so good. I don't like discover (when it's too random), but it was from a pool that you made so it didnt feel like its unfair. It was the first card I ever crafted in gold because if how much I loved Reno Hunter back in late 2019

The problem I have with cards like Eliza, ironically, really is just the Runes in general. I HATE the fact that the Rune system, instead of a fun deckbuilding tool and an interesting design challenge, has just been relegated to a way for them to superficially limit cards without changing any values around. (I mean, why the hell is the Headless Horseman not a generic DK Hero card? Its NOT that OP, especially compared to *Reno, Lone Ranger* which has been nerfed TWICE and is still one of the most powerfull cards ever printed) Plus, while I love Rainbow DK, it has been getting TOO MUCH support. Triple Frost and Blood are basically DEAD in Standard right now and Triple Unholy is hanging by a thread thanks to the Plague strategy. Its a mess and most of the carss for the last 2 , now 3, expansions have done nothing to alleviate it.

I played some triple rune dk when this class came out. The way devs push rainbow dk sickens me. You can put almost all new cards in it, and triple rune decks only have restrictions, because of dumbass two-rune cards. Why i can't use headless horseman in my triple blood controll deck?? I feel like they put these runes at random but still fitting only for raindow. With couple sets like these this class is dead. New players won't even understand what are those runes about because you can use anything you like in rainbow dk, and everything you cant put in is dogshit.

The rune system feels like it could lead to a lot of interesting ideas. You could print even stronger cards, but since they are locked behind rune combos you'll probably have to dilute the decks with more commons in standard... Theoretically... or they could just homogenize everything, and all the payoff cards aren't like triple rune cards force particular builds and choices... all the better cards are 2 runes at most and rarely 2 of the same runes.

It just goes to show that the current card pool size is still not enough to warrant more than 1 or 2 dk variants to be competitively viable at any time (in standard at least), maybe they could make dk's core set even bigger than what it already is because loosening rune restrictions didn't seem to help in that regard at all, it just homogenized a lot of the rune decks into playing the same 4-5 cards.

2B 1U = Handbuff 2U 1B = Corpse farming 2F 1U = Excavate 2U 1F = Plague generation 2F 1B = Weapons and freezing? 2B 1F = Deathrattles and freezing? Rainbow = Corpse spending for payoff card 3B = Control/overhealth 3F = Spell slinging, little deathrattles, weapons heavy 3U = Undead generation and swarming

I feel like Runes could work if each rune got like... 5 cards per expansion and 3 runeless cards too. So they'd have a lot more cards per expansion than other classes but they could work with more

What's wierd is that they could just print more double rune cards, but they just do single rune cards, which incentivises players to build rainbow. Having a reason to go double rune, and then deciding on what the third rune is actually seems like what runes are all about, yet they're allergic to doubling down on it. Plagues especially could've been pushed as Double Unholy Frost for thier own archetype, yet they took away the runes so it would slot into Rainbow, when all that deck really needed was more cards to be printed that could fit the rune requirement.

The last time a non rainbow deck was meta was literally DKs release. At this point Blizzard ought to just get rid of runes. They clearly don't care about supporting the pure runes/2 rune mixes because Perils literally only added rainbow support

I think Headless Horseman is unholy for the same reason farm hand is. cards that specifically generate more undead for you to play are considered "unholy" by nature. Also to keep it out of triple blood I guess because triple runes being playable isn't allowed anymore, fuck you.

My favorite card right now is Mr. Mukla. I love his artwork and his vibe, I love big overstatted minions with downside and I was a big fan of the original Mukla as well.

I might be misremembering, but when Death Knight first came out, I swear I heard that Rainbow Death Knight wasn't an archetype the team planned to support or wanted to focus on. But, now, it feels like the only real one getting any cards.

Pardon my non English speaking ass in case I don't speak correctly, but I think you are compressing runes more than you should, not taking in fact other effects they have, and trying to compress a rune combo into a single function instead of a combination of aspects of 2 runes For Bu: undead and unholy are the corpse combo true, but minion generation and duplication seems to be unholy, snatching hand and farm hand are the cards that explicitly generate undead, and probably miniaturize/gigantify is a unholy rune thing considering is what puppeter and snatching ghoul have in common it generates and undead using the keyword (and also that unholy blood was the handbuff combo since march of the lich king thanks to unholy having the good handbuff targets) and for the headless horseman, is literally asphyxiate with a body (blood) and generates undead (unholy) the flavor break its hero power being able to go face for FU: i think down with the ship and tomb traitor were in flavor, all the other plague cards are unholy and unholy in general doesnt have have effects that do damage except from plague strike and it doesnt go face, so the down with the ship a spell that does face damage and tomb traitor being control board clear made sense (and they go removed bc for a time BU and UUU plague were more liked than using frost cards, and it was for nothing bc excavate plague dk ended up being FU like plague was originally intended, it just lacked enough support for the combination at first) for BF: quarzite is very obvious, and sindragosa honestly also worked as BF (turns freeze into removal), i honestly think that eliza should not have a blood rune but a unholy one (probably?) frost has a tendency for putting valuable effects on death rattles pure unholy death rattles are minions plagues and boneshreder, blood are value with saurfang and arcanite ripper big lifesteal minion, tutoring draw on harbinger of winter, massive hand duplication of spells on lady death whisper, chip damage thassarian damage and rime sculptor tokens, the new pirate freezes and doe damage, and forst mixed with unholy is reksa stealing minions, eliza being frost is fine the weird thing is why is blood? blood goes for handbuff and unholy is field buffs and i think a global damage aura is more closer to unholys, i think this is the biggest example on trying to force rainbow dk bc the blood rune simply doesnt make that much sense sorry for the long text an apologize in case of any misunderstanding i might cause because of my english, im a huge fan of your videos so i dont want this to be bad towards you or something but i wanted to share my point of view on the runes identities

I think most of these would be fine (aside from Elysa, idk wtf is going on there), IF we still had some Triple Reward. Because right now it feels like all the decks are Rainbow because why wouldn't they be ? We've got less than ten double runes cards that have the same rune...

The only reason that i see, its that they are scared of making it op on unholy... Wich is the point with thr triple rune cards. That was the idea of DK in the beggining, i suppose they just don't want that back.

I just crafted rainbow DK for Whizzing then it got nerfed & seeing the new dk cards it’s rather disappointing. I might just disenchant everything. Death knight is so cool but the lack of cards from each expansion & dual class cards from mini sets they can’t add enough rune support cards for each.

Man.... I just want to play triple rune death knight in standard, but every time they release a remotely powerful card they give it 2 different runes like they are afraid of triple rune DK will be even a little playable.
