The longest recorded case of hiccups lasted for 68 years … and was caused by a falling hog. While that level of severity is extremely uncommon, most of us are no stranger to an occasional case of the hiccups. But what causes these ‘hics’ in the first place? John Cameron takes us into the diaphragm to find out.

This always works for me: take a deep breath and hold it a couple seconds then exhale very slowly. The idea is to stop the diaphragm then force it to move slowly rather than spasm. If you can do this without a hiccup it's unlikely they'll start up again. If you hiccup during this (which is very rare for me) then try again but with slower breathing in and out.

This works for me too, as does gulping water fast with some air, then burping. Both work, usually.

Yes! Someone at work recently taught me that trick, SkySpiral7. Take a deep breath and hold it, releasing the air slowly in small amounts at a time to regain control of the diaphragm. She (my co worker) learned this trick while taking singing lessons. It works every time for me.

Sometimes when I'm bored, I usually write down questions for myself so I can look it up on the internet later. I am so glad I asked myself why we, humans, hiccup. What a interesting video I just watch and not to mention some history about the hiccup.

That is a cool idea to write down questions when you are bored, actually. I think I will sometimes think of random questions when I am bored from now and on. Thanks, I guess. It is a nice way to learn new things

50 hiccups per minute?! Jesus christ, that would be a living hell. My diaphragm is on fire if I have hiccups for more than a couple of hours. Can't imagine what Jennifer Mee did during those four weeks. I doubt she'd even be able to speak in that time frame.

One time that happened to me when my mom was grilling outside. I have chronic hiccups and it felt like I was suffocating for maybe 20 minutes. It burned like hell and I could barely get a sentence out.

When I was 12 or 13 years old, I developed / learned the ability to stop my hiccups. I heard that pinching your earlobe stops hiccups. It seemed to work for me, but I found that eventually when I would get the hiccups and consciously think to pinch my earlobe my hiccups would subside without having to pinch. Ever since, when I get the hiccups, as soon as I recognize I am hiccuping, they go away. I never experience more than 3 or 4. I learned to stop my hiccups with my mind.

When I was in 6th grade, one of my fellow classmates had hiccups, and the teacher noticed it. She put a paper towel on top of a bottle of water, and told her to drink it. It worked, but I never understood how. To this day, if I have hiccups, I still use this method, and crazy as it sounds, it works every time.

If you don't have a paper towel on hand, there's no need to use one. Just drink water slowly, but make sure to swallow more than 10 mouthfuls. My mom said hiccups are caused by not drinking enough water, so you need to drink more water to solve it. If 10 mouthfuls don't stop it, then try drinking 20. Btw, this method works every time.

Just close your eyes, prevent any body movements, breathe very slowly and it will go away. That's how it works for me at least.

Hey there! I'm an osteopath, and I learned in class that hiccup was a physiological reflex for the diaphragm muscle to re-balance itself. Indeed when the hiccup occurs, the diaphragm contracts, or in other words, it goes down. When your stomach is full, it pushes the diaphragm upward, stretching the left part of it, so the hiccup appears. Same when you get a strong emotion, you often gasp, or sob (if crying), which induce an unbalanced diaphragm. This explains the hiccup afterwards as well. This is why breathing exercises, or stop breathing for few cycles are methods to stop the hiccup: you try to "reboot" the diaphragm reflex circuit. I hope it helps :) Cheers!

I get hiccups very often, I’d say around 1-20 times a week, averaging around 11 times a week. Only one thing has worked for me EVERY SINGLE TIME. I take a deep breath, hold it, then I try to breathe in and out, without actually breathing in or out any air, which tightens all muscles around the lungs. I just do this until I feel my hiccups are gone. If you were watching me do this it would look as if I were taking fast deep breaths, but if you could hear me, you could tell I was not actually breathing. This was hard to explain so I hopefully its understandable enough to potentially help someone. ✌🏽💜🙂🕉

Some 20 years ago I read in a children's anatomy book that hiccups occurr when your diaphragm gets twisted, and that hiccups are your body's attempt to straighten it; also, that the remedy is for someone to pat you on the back with their fist, medium strength, right along where the diaphragm is, for hiccups to stop. It's always worked for my family and me. Odd that TED-ED didn't mention any of this.

Taking in as much air as possible holding it while compressing it in your lungs then slowly exhaling a little at a time then not talking and breathing slowly for a minute has never failed me. Unless I rush it or don't take in enough air. It's too consistent to a be a coincidence. It might not work for everyone but it certainly works for me. I've gotten better at the technique over the years especially since a medication i used to take made me hiccup A LOT!

I had hiccups when I started watching, learning that it was the diaphram spasming made me flex, lean forward, and put hard massaging pressure on it. No more hiccups...you just need your brain to know which muscle exactly to work I suppose.

Every time I get hiccups I try the holding air technique, and it works for me sometimes at the first try other times I have to hold air for 2-3 times and they’re gone!

heres what works for me: breathe thru ur nose, and hold it, while holding it, swollow ur saliva 3 times, then breathe out thru the mouth. its not 100% but works for me 50% of the time actually,

this works 100% of the time i promise... you have to get on a bed and lean of the side, upside down (top of head pointing down but dont fall off) then hold your breath for however long you can... and that ALWAYS WORKS

The method I use to get rid of my hiccups is to inhale air and force enough air under great pressure that it stretches the muscle in the diaphragm so that while being stretched it relaxes the spasming muscle. Works every time. Use the jaw to pump mouth fulls of air into the chest cavity after the chest is full by the usual means of inhaling.

This video helped even before it could end. I just had hurried dinner and gulped lots of water. This caused frequent hiccups. The moment I got to know, it's cause of rapid eating and drinking together, I just voluntary Vomit. Feeling good and relaxed. Instantly hiccups stopped after vomit. Thanks.

Yes! This is my method. I’m 2 years late to this video. But if you have hiccups you can try my method. It works for me but not for everyone. Take a deep breath, swallow it as if you are ingesting air bubbles. And then burp it out. You might have to do it a couple time but all in all it works for me 9/10 times.

Remedy for hiccups that never failed for me, my friends and family: Get a glass of water, hold your breath for about 20-30 seconds, then drink the whole glass of water. Don't take a breath at any point until the glass is empty.

Mine is similar. Hold my breath filling my lungs with air, then immediately take several big gulps of water, then continue holding my breath for as long as I can. Works 100% of the time for me.

Mine is similar too: Get a glass of water, breathe out all of the air in your lungs so that they are empty, then drink the glass of water and don't breathe until you have finished at least most of the water. I have never seen it fail when executed properly. Your remedy sounds much easier to perform though, while with mine it's a little challenging and it's crucial to resist the temptation to breathe in because you might breathe the water in, so it shouldn't be attempted by young children or people who aren't confident in doing it.

The above is my fail-safe remedy at any rate. I haven't had to use it for many years because I can stop hiccuping by holding my breath. The trick with holding your breath only is to: hold it, then breathe out, then hold it again. As long as you are quick and time it so you don't hiccup in between each hold then it works well and is easy

My method has been to take in a really deep breath, basically filling my lungs to capacity, then I apply pressure -- it's like pushing to exhale but with my breath held. Several seconds of this tends to make it go away for me.

I use the hiccup to burp (not just burp randomly, the hiccup must provide the air) and it goes away in 1 or 2 tries every time.

Hey John, I have a theory on hiccups. Some may be caused by foam build up. When we eat there is a chance that the food could get stuck between the stomach and lungs and that we may have a difficult time telling the difference. Foam is possible by drinking soda to gases that our bodies create. It can travel through without us actually choking and that the body is in an alarmed mode to prevent that possibility.

One use of hiccup is for clearing chokes. Eating too dry foods and sometimes they get stuck in your throat. My body always starts hiccup at that time and it helps. To stop hiccup you just need to breath lightly for few minutes.

One thing they didn't mention is thinking your hiccups away. I've gotten a lot worse at doing it in my older years but I used to be able to 100% of the time concentrate and on my hiccups and make then stop completely. I even showed people this when I got hiccups randomly. I find it hard to do now. Not really sure why.
