Humans should urinate at least four to six times a day, but occasionally, the pressures of modern life force us to clench and hold it in. How bad is this habit, and how long can our bodies withstand it? Heba Shaheed takes us inside the bladder to find out.

Holding your urine for too long can weaken the bladder muscles over time. This can lead to problems such as incontinence and not being able to fully empty your bladder. Holding your urine for extremely long periods of time can also cause urinary tract infections due to bacteria build-up.

The meanest thing I ever heard of was a teacher my grandmother had in elementary school. The teacher would not let any of the children leave class to use the bathroom. My grandmother refused to be like other kids who wet their pants. She held it. And held it. When she got home she found she couldn't pee at all. They had to take her to the doctor.

@@susanfarley1332 So the students were not allowed to go to the restroom the entire time they were in school? I could understand not being allowed to leave while they were being taught their subjects, but lunchtime should have been the time for bathroom breaks too! When in Catholic grammar school, the nuns didn't allow us to leave the classroom either, but we got bathroom breaks before having lunch! Class began at 9 am; restroom, lunch and play time from 12 noon to 1 pm, and back to class from 1 to 3 pm. So, a total of six hours in school, not counting travel time to and from school. And the nuns were very strict! If any teacher was not to allow any breaks in all that time, I would think it would be the nuns! LOL!

“Holding it” for too long too frequently as a child partly caused me to develop bad bladder infections and I had to be on different medications for 2+ years and regularly have an Urodynamic evaluation- painful procedure where they insert a catheter and fill your bladder with water until your body forces you to release it to test bladder pressure. I also came very close to having a major surgery but thankfully the right combination of medications helped. Fun times.

When I was in my third grade, I had to pee quite frequently which I couldn't help it. My teacher hated it. Once she walked in and I really had to go pee. I asked her permission and...she just slapped my face so hard. I was a small kid. I didn't say a word. I didn't tell my parents. I literally had no friends. I went back of the classroom and cried in silence. My cheek got red print from her tight slap because I wanted to pee. I am 25 now and I remember every bit. I'll never forget her.

In seeing this topic again, I had a thought. Anyone going to school with any type of medical condition that makes them have to use the restroom more often, should get a note from their doctor, which should be given to the school's principal and respective teachers. Hopefully, the doctor's note will resolve any issues with the teacher allowing the student to use the restroom when needed.

I had a bed wetting problem when I was younger. They taught me how to subconsciously hold it while sleeping. I got in the habit and then at 19 got a kidney infection from always holding it too long. Learned that while you sometimes have to hold it there is such a thing as "too long". Which isn't good.

I had an elementary teacher who always said no to kids when they ask to go to the bathroom. Especially after the break. "You can't go now, because you had a break and you should use your breaktime to go the toilet. Wait untill the next breaktime" she always said. At a very young age I knew it was wrong but what can a kid do against sick minded adults? + As if I chose voluntarily to go to the toilet after the break. One day I just couldn't hold it, so I asked and she said "NO". So I decided myself to not listen to someone else when it comes to your own health. So, I went to the toilet and the next day I was punished and I was invited to PRINCIPAL with my parents.

Funny; I was riding a motorcycle in drizzling, cold rain, when I pulled in to a W/M to pee. Drenched and cold. Got to the men's room, and the need to go was overpowering! But...my hands were numb. SO numb, in fact, that I couldn't work a zipper! Fortunately, they had a warm air hand dryer, so I sat there, pushing that button, in a race against my bladder, to get feeling back in my hands! There really wasn't any other option: what, ask a complete stranger to work my damn zipper?! Drenched as I already was, I honestly would probably rather pee myself than make a request like that!

Yeah, like the others said your eyes sense the toilet and that relays a signal to your brain telling your bladder to get ready to release. But you do this so many times that even when your not *in* the bathroom your brain already sends that signal to your bladder because it already knows you're going to go.

Thankfully I got the courage to ask and teacher after looking at my face and condition said "You can go". Thank God no one looked back at my bench and teacher actually got the idea after seeing my face. Man I thought Im done here. The thing that boosted my fear was, before this incident I read about a physicist whose bladder exploded because of holding the pee for a long time. Well now only those who are reading this know the incident.

+Jake La Forest you are only supposed to drink when you are thirsty. Over drinking water can be bad for you so the 8 glasses a day is bullshit. mobile.nytimes.com/2015/08/25/upshot/no-you-do-not-have-to-drink-8-glasses-of-water-a-day.html

Prof. Ingo Froböse from the German Academy of Sports recommends at least 30 ml per kilogram you weigh to keep all cells going. The problem is more that people don't drink plain water/tea but sugary drinks that have other side effects on your health, rather than not drinking enough. Also a lot of people are so disconnected from their body awareness that they think they're hungry/have an appetite for something undefinable, when they're actually thirsty, so a reminder every now and then is actually not all that bad :)

When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️

@@user-yz1zt5qt5t I'm doing fine, it still hurts when I pee and I still see a bit of blood coming out (no it's not my period). So I still have UTI. But I try to drink more water, get more vitamins C, and drink more cranberry juice, my UTI might go away soon. So I'm not giving up yet! ❤

This year I developed contamination OCD, and started to hold my pee for really long stretches of time because I was scared of going to the bathroom and spend 2 hours washing my hands. During these months anyway I gradually became unable to hold my pee for such long periods, and even if now I'm quite fine and not scared of anything, just a bit lazy, I think this really bad habit has come to damage my body: right now any tiny amount of urine causes me to feel like I'm about to let a waterfall out, it's painful, urgent and really annoying; when I get to the bathroom running, it turns out is just a normal or even fewer amount of pee. Surely there might be something else going on, and I will get visited, but yes guys, treat your bladder with respect!!

When your teacher doesn't allow you to go use the bathroom: "Well, I bet you didn't know that if you don't go pee for long enough, that can cause your bladder to explode? If that happens and I need surgery, you're paying my medical bills cuz I don't have insurance."

I was born with mild spina bifida, so mild that it was not diagnosed until college, but bad enough that I rarely had warning that my bladder was about to release. I was in my 40s before Depends became available retail. I WISH I could hold my pee.
