Charlotte is genuinely one of the nicest people. Watching the Princess and the Frog as a child, I didn't pick up on the fact that those men didn't sell her that building because of her race and her gender, I just thought they were being jerks. The movie was set in the 1920's and unfortunately, racism was a pretty big thing. So the fact that Charlotte (And her father) looked past that and befriended Tiana and treated her like a person, compared to other people who didn't, is really wonderful. It shows not everyone was a terrible person back then (Which they weren't, it was just unfortunate a majority were). The fact that she also left the prince to go and help Tiana was also sweet, showing she cared more about her friend than dancing with a prince. Also, not everyone likes accepting large amounts of money as a gift; so the fact Charlotte didn't give her a hand out and said "Hey, why don't you work at my party tonight and I'll pay you," was a really wonderful thing as well. The bankers were definitely jerks, and most likely discriminatory. However if you look at the situation from a financial/economical perspective, as you would expect a banker to do, then their refusing the sale actually makes a lot of sense. See Tiana wants to open a high class restaurant, this was explained to the bankers who said it was beyond her ability. while they said it in a rude way, the reality is without prince naveen and charlotte the bankers are right. Tiana saved every penny just to buy the building, the renovations would have had to have been paid for almost entirely by naveen's parents and charlotte as it would have costed over 10 times what the building it self cost. but even not considering all of that, only about 5% of restaurants make it past the first year as they actually have to operate at a loss for that time period. and a high class restaurant lives off its connections. contracts with big name chefs and top of the line food providers, wine companies, and entertainment like very well known performers, all requiring MASSIVE down payments. as well having the reputation and publicity of being known as a high society hang out, Tana's cooking could be the best in the world and it wouldnt save her from bankruptcy. all this would be information the bankers would be fully aware of, so to the bankers it was a bad investment that would not have paid off, as they had told tiana, they were willing to sell her the building until a bigger company with more guaranteed financial means made a larger offer for it. the other offer was a much better financial investment for the bank, tiana's race and gender didnt have anything to do with that.

I think one element people don’t really think about is location. People see the 1920s south and just assume racism but New Orleans has long been a city where cultures mix. Being controlled by the French and the Spanish long before becoming part of the United States and being known a safe haven for those who might be hunted elsewhere such as runaway slaves. This mixing of groups resulted in to new cultures being born in the Cajun and Creole (yes they are different) who could be considered the earliest examples of the American mixing pot in action.

There's another addition that a lot of folks forget about how racism in the US developed differently depending on the location. There's an old saying concerning American Racism: In the north, blacks could go as high as they wanted, but had to remain AWAY, while in the South blacks could be as close, but couldn't go as high as they wanted. So, with that context in mind, Tiana and Charlotte being childhood friends is perfectly normal in many respects, the child of hired help playing and keeping an eye on the employer's child and even being friends wouldn't have raised many eyebrows. You also see this aspect in how the realtors refused to sell Tiana the property she wanted because of what she was, they were preventing a black woman from getting "uppity" by owning her own prominent business. That's the actual foreword thinking of the LaBuffs, that they were willing to help a black woman open her own prominent business.

When there isn’t a female villain, the main character has no female friends (Belle, Mulan, Jasmine) or the female friend character is mostly non existent (Pocahontas). To be fair, a lot of disney movies are based on old fairytales and folklores that were told to children to teach them lessons. And back when these stories were written, the mother was the solid foundation of a family (as the father was usually gone making the money), thus the best way to upend the story and 'rock the boat' was to make the mother a villainous character. I feel like Lottie is a brilliant character, because she's not only such a subversion of tropes (the rich girl=mean girl trope, the dumb blonde tropes, etc.), but she's also just a good solid balance to Tiana. She's high-octane bubbly energy where Tiana is serious to the point of sometimes almost seeming dour, gung-ho and always throwing herself forward where Tiana is restrained and almost afraid to reach too far, and yet there's never a sign that this is a negative between them. It's clear that Tiana cares for her as much as Lottie does for Tiana, and that it's not a clash of personalities. Sometimes Tiana needs Lottie to tell her to go and grab what she wants with both hands, and sometimes Lottie needs Tiana to tell her to slow down and focus, but it's never in a way that sets them at odds. And I especially love the idea of a female character in a Disney movie that has that enthusiastic golden retriever energy usually reserved for kid/animal sidekicks, who isn't a rival, and might be a little airheaded, but isn't _stupid._ Lottie's _flighty,_ and sometimes her energy gets ahead of her brain, but she's not actually a dumb blonde. She's a well-rounded, quirky, silly bundle of energy, and she's the best sort of "will do anything for my bestie, with all the enthusiasm" kind of friend.

Heartily agreed. She's allowed to be a real person, not merely a stereotype. Many characters from this story have that opportunity, and it gives a great deal of life to the themes in play. These aren't just writer self-inserts having a struggle session, shouting their grievances and traumas to the world, these are interesting characters who all learn from each other and their situations. in light of the racism discussion, It makes me adore the characters even more, Charlotte as well as Tianna, Tianna's mother Eudora and Lotties father. I always felt the movie was grounded in real-world 1920s New Orleans, and certainly not a fantasy equality world, and in that framing, it was delightful to see these characters interactions. Carlotte struck me as, maybe naive, but genuine, she didn't throw money at Tianna or give her a job out of some guilt cos she's black, the two seemed to have a real bond of friendship, and Carlottes generosity is a reflection of her love for Tianna and for life in general, as well as infrugality. But she didn't nepotise her friend either, I think if Tianna was a bad cook things would be different, Lottie adored Tiannas cooking and wanted to show it to her party guests, Tianna earned that, like how mr LaBouff adored Eudora's dresses and commissioned them for Lottie which fostered the girls' relationship, maybe LaBouff and Eudora have experiences with racism but it was like they were ignoring it all and fostering an environment of genuineness and love among their children. Just my thought. We can point out some other characters, like the realtors fixating on "background" or Facilier being cynical or even vague bitterness about the world from some of Tianna's other friends, these are all very vague so the imagination runs wild, but in contrast to these are Tianna, Lottie, and their parents just living their best life and being real with each other.

I think it’s really challenging to write rich characters in media in a way that a general audience will accept. Typically, we see the tropes being a character that’s just really spoiled and ignorant of the world, their lack of understanding or empathy reflecting on how they treat others. Or they take the direction of a character that is extremely isolated and lonely. Their wealth being a sort of burden of expectation, distrust, and being misunderstood by others. I like the sincerity of Charlotte’s portrayal, where she is pretty spoiled and has a tendency to be self-centered, but these are natural flaws of the life she was born into. On the flip side, she is kind, charitable, and wants the best for those she cares about, so much so that she’ll forego her personal desires to support theirs. She isn’t written in a way that makes her unpleasantly out of touch, OR in a way that gives the impression that wealth is a burden on her. Because it’s not. Her family wealth gives her a happy, healthy life, but she isn’t written in a way that makes the audience resent her for it. She spreads that same happiness to others, whether she realizes the impact or not. We often view wealthy characters with a level of resentment when they express unhappiness, because in a primarily capitalist society, we often attribute happiness to the comfort of financial stability. But everyone is allowed to feel negative emotions, and I’m sure wealth does have a number of unpleasant consequences that prevent happiness, especially being born into wealth. Being out of touch isn’t always their fault, especially for a character like Charlotte. It can result in naïveté that makes you susceptible to manipulation. When that forces you to realize you often can’t trust the intentions of those around you, it would probably cause you to develop a level of general distrust and resentment for those that do not have your same level of financial stability. Because if they covet what you have and they do not, how likely is it that that the thoughts and opinions they outwardly express to you are sincere? I imagine it’s an easy environment to develop that cold, elitism mentality. Charlotte and Tiana make a cool contrast, because Tiana’s unwavering resolve to achieve her own dreams with her own hands makes her a friend that Charlotte would never have to question, and vice versa. I mean, if you think about it, Tiana’s longtime friendship could very well be the reason that Charlotte is as well-adjusted as she is.

And all of it… irreplaceable.” We are so quick to dismiss the feelings of others based on circumstance, or weigh one person’s emotional pain over another’s. The reality is that there is no way to measure an individual’s personal internal conflicts, so why attempt to compare and contrast? We feel what we feel for any number of reasons. That’s why prioritizing empathy is so important. Recognizing and trying to accept that everyone carries their own burdens and has their own hardships to face, even if we don’t see or understand them.

Honestly, when it comes to historical implications, I think it would be fine to go at it with an honest perspective. Perhaps LaBouff family did in fact use slave labor back then and thus have all the money presently, but considering their current position, there's a likelihood that they would rather give that money back. The only reason they haven't yet is, well, that's just the current environment. Maybe they haven't considered what would they do with lower pay. Additionally, for how he treats his workers or whatnot, it's just as likely he has done a lot of investing and savings.
@MrSophire Жыл бұрын
True, and don’t forget this movie takes place at least 35 years after slavery ended. The LaBuffs could have worked with the Underground Railroad. Plus (don’t kill me) not all slave owners were mustached twirling villains who treated their slaves with cruelty. Slavery is wrong but at the time it wasn’t seen as pure evil.

Personally, I found it to be a great middle-ground portrayal of real racism - because we usually see a black and white (no pun intended) spectrum of racism where either the characters are Klan members, using slurs, and totally irredeemable… or they’re NOT racist. Instead, Charlotte and Big Daddy are well-intentioned, friendly, and generous… but still benefit from the racist laws and segregation, and seem totally oblivious that there’s more than just their one black friend who could use extra money to get her restaurant. It’s nuanced, and people miss it because it’s never called to attention (and because it’s a side detail in a story about our main characters falling in love, trying to turn back into humans, growing as people, and avoiding the machinations of Dr Facilier, The Shadow Man)

It’s obvious that she’s loved for being a twist on the usual spoiled child cliche. With charlotte being a kind and understanding person especially with her bestie Tiana, but what I like the most about her is she’s easily one of the funniest characters to come out of Disney also, she’s so energetic and loud in the most endearing way mostly because of how her actress (Jennifer Cody) delivers her lines.
@JenniferKlumpp Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right about why Lottie never just gave Tiana the money. Tiana would have been hurt by being offered what she would have seen as charity (even if Lottie would have considered it a much deserved gift). But Charlotte took her very first chance to give Tiana a job she would be amazing at /and/ overpay her so that her friend could have her dream and feel good about it.
@rinsotomei9650 Жыл бұрын
I love that Charlotte didn’t push or force Tianna to accept any kind of money to help pay for the restaurant. And the only time we see Tianna get money from Charlotte is when she “pays” her best friend to cater her party. Charlotte knew that she would not just accept money. Not to mention. She probably commissioned the dress for Tianna to give as a gift.
@sillyladtan Жыл бұрын
I mean people keep saying this but it doesn't make sense? For one, ball gowns are something Charlotte enjoys, not Tiana, by Tiana's own admission she doesn't go out. So why buy something for a friend knowing full well this isn't their thing at all? Even her entire attitude when she was downtrodden at the ball, Tiana lost her chance at a restaurant and yet Charlotte kept insisting their dreams were finally coming true when really she was just talking about herself. And Tiana was very willing to take Charlotte's money anyway through Naveen. Like the whole premise of Naveen having to marry her so he can use her money to buy the restaurant just doesn't make sense if they really close friends like that. Like if she actually cared about Tiana's dreams she could have followed through any time before, with the dad even, as an investor that she could have been paying back through the restaurant. To be clear this isn't meant to be a bash on Charlotte, she's a great character and ultimately a good person, but I just think people are way overselling the friendship between Charlotte and Tiana.

At the party when Tiana’s beignet table gets wrecked, I was anticipating her flying off the handle at Tiana, kicking her while she’s down for “ruining” her perfect party. I was not ready for Lottie bringing her own romance to a screeching halt to help her friend. 🥺

Charlotte was a slap on the face on all the classic highschool romances who say "blonde. Rich. Pink. My grandmother's family were friends with black people before and during the Great Depression BUT they were also poor people who worked alongside those black people cleaning houses and picking cotton, as well as doing other work on farms. I don't know that many wealthy white people from that time frame would have been as accepting. However, I could see Big Daddy being extra considerate toward Tiana and her mother because of her mother's abilities as a seamstress/designer. I'm a hobbyist seamstress and have dabbled in designing and constructing clothing from the ground up. It's hard work that takes a lot of skill and if you're off by just a little, you can end up with some...less than desirable results. Also factor in that New Orleans has a large population of Creole people and that could also have an effect. For anyone who doesn't know, in Louisiana, Creole people are those of French and African descent. And there were actually several wealthy Creole families in Louisiana. So it could be that Big Daddy knew some Creole folks and was thus more accepting of black people than the average white person of that time. I never really thought much of it, because for some reason it never clicked for me that it was the 20s even though that's the style of the clothing people are wearing lol

Lottie is an underappreciated character for sure! An obviously spoiled girl who was still raised with good values, but can still be oblivious to the big picture. Like if she had heard the realters' comment to Tiana, she might have just taken it to mean Tiana's less-than-wealthy upbringing than anything race related. Sure, she would have ripped into them for just that, but the concept of racism would have had to be explained. But really, what cements her as a genuine person is how she's willing to toss aside what could be her one chance at fulfilling her lifelong dream for the sake of two people who are truly in love. Tiana cannot ask for a better friend than that.

The most telling moment for me was when Tiana had fallen into the food at the party. Lottie had paid her to make beignets so that Naveen would like her. And while it's never explicitly said that all of them were trashed, my expectation when she saw the mess was that she would ask "what happened to the food!?" in panic that her plan was ruined and get angry at Tiana or at least go into a fit about the food. But instead, she showed her colors by being more concerned about Tiana that her own needs in that moment, which absolutely stunned me in the best way. She is very peppy, but she calms down in a serious moment and has her priorities straight.

I think it’s great that a girl with tons of advantages wants to help rather then take or humiliate ( which mindset I never understood except to give a story a villain). Good for this movie for finding a villain that was not the evil queen, wicked step mother, or demented witch with a grudge against the poor beautiful hard working heroine.

I need the first draft of the script for this movie, according to one of the concept artists originally tiana was named "Maddy" and was a chamber maid,prince Naveen was named prince "Henry" and Dr Facilier was named " Dr Duvalier " and as said by armand baltazar was a failed voodoo priest who turned to the dark art of "Hoodoo" , his lair was originally underground and carnival like,and his death scene apparently consisted of him burning in the LABEOUF mansion or his lair,or turning into a frog ang getting eaten by an aligator , Duvalier was also supposed to be preformed by Morgan freeman. Prince Naveen was originally white and named Henry, I have no further information other than he was British Tiana was originally a chamber maid for Charlotte (who was insecure and spoiled but bossy) Louis apparently was an accountant who wanted to be a trumpet playing "party animal" he was also good friends with Dr Duvalier and was double crossed by him and turned him into an alligator And Ray wasn't supposed to die . And there was also gonna be a battle between mama Odie and Dr Facilier and a bunch of frogs were supposed to rain down on the battle, Originally Dr "Duvalier" lead them there to eat them.

5:13 This is probably my own headcannon but since Lottie was friends with Tiana since they were kids.
