The bit about metas is 100% the most important thing. Nothing worse than falling in love with a game and then hitting a point where progression is impossible without drastically shifting your playstyle into an unfun meta
@vazzaroth
@vazzaroth 11 ай бұрын
Warframe's meta made it go from borderline my favorite game of all time with 1000+hrs of gameplay to something I look back on with a bit of disdain and now judge people negatively if they're still playing. I have to assume they're doing the "Turbospeed optimal high DPS builds" and all that, when I liked a game where I got to try a bunch of extremely varied and different weapons with a badass space ninja or knight... I despise the entire concept of speedrunning, so it pretty jarring and sad to find it pop up semi-organically (due to the circumstances and choices devs made) in a game I was previously liking once I started getting higher level. And over time, it became more and more required, and that social requirement migrated down the chain so that even lower level, non high-end endgame content has the expectation that you're 'practising' for your speedy runs at high level. It took about 10 verbal beratements from teammates waiting at the exit for me to understand that even the ones that were quiet were almost certainly annoyed at me for committing the highest sin of... watching my actual WF powers unfold, aiming, and going slightly out of my way to explore for loot. AKA what the game is 'pitched' as being it's main loop, not psychotically paced dash-jump-spin-flip exercises for your pinky and thumb. (At least defense missions became popular to combat this, but I still haven't completed the solar map b/c the 'death tunnel' runs are so nervewracking and oftentimes I don't "Keep up" so I may bring down the entire run by being 'out of position'. Which, ofc, are all a matter of opinion not fact, but the meta players see themselves as doing the correct thing anyway b/c of the community echochamber on forums, etc and the video content being focused almost purely on efficacy and nothing else.) And there's only so far you can go playing solo. It's clear the meta players have set the tone of what's being 'demanded' from the playerbase and people like me and many of the commenters in the video asmon is reacting to are the cost of the devs prioritizing those players loud demands. Might make biz sense so at the end of the day, as long as the profit motive and not the experience of their players sets the tone, this is what games will be. Us grognards talk about the old days, but it's just so hard to see a way of life that served you so well go away and slowly become purely impossible to partake in, just like the cranky old conservatives are always bitching about.

@@angel_of_rust so then just dont play during that meta. league is great because the meta constantly shifts and when your interests align or you find out that maybe this new meta you never tried before is actually fun, then you enjoy playing it. I'm an adc main who didn't like mage meta at first but then I started playing swain/ziggs adc and I liked it more than normal adc. Its on you to understand that the metas in certain games will be way more prolific than in others, and that you should restructure yourself to embrace those changes if you want to keep playing the games.
@MobileGamerD
@MobileGamerD 8 ай бұрын
@@everythingponyI mean yes but also no, the thing that sucks about mmo metas is that there’s multiple classes so generally your class has a designated playstyle for each type of playstyle but also what kind of sucks too is if you love like a pvp playstyle/solo playstyle it could be complete garbage in pve at the same time which limits the content you can play comfortably. Which is kind of like a double edged sword 😔

It's harder to do than it seems like it should be, regardless of the medium it takes. I guess the fact that I had access to SO many games helped, but I invited my buddy over saying 'lets get back into WoW, dude'. He brought his PC and everything. 25 mins into playing a new blood elf in Burning Crusade, I was thinking about how raiding in the end game just seemed so toxic, so annoying to have to show up at certain times, didn't really lead to anything but just more of the same... and went "Bro fuck this!" and alt+F4'd, unsubbed, uninstalled. I've never gone back. My poor buddy on the other hand played by himself all weekend when we weren't playing MP PS3 games and has been on and off the WoW train, seemingly kinda hating it, for his whole life. I really feel like 18yr old me made SUCH a good decision back then lol. I'll never forget that first Dwarf Gun-ranger character I made back in vanilla though. That was good times. The rest of WoW.... less so.

It is indeed a personal thing. When after many many years I tried again the vanilla wow classic servers (private) I felt all the feelings and memories of the time flowing back. I could literally smell again the room I was in as a kid when doing MC for the first time. And you know what? I was glad I had this flashback, and I was very happy to realise that I was lucky enough to experience such an adventure (even if it was on a virtual world) with my friends at such a young age, despite the fact that it is now over. It was a great adventure. I am now looking forward to trying new things, whether this is gaming, social, or career, and I am able to drop anything I do not like without having any regrets about the time spent, because it is the time that I chose how to spent, and it is part of my adventure.
@DrakusRecords
@DrakusRecords Жыл бұрын
I miss the satisfaction of games "ending". I remember being a kid and beating Space Quest for the first time. It was the first game I ever "beat". I was so happy. Granted by today's standards it's an incredibly short game, but back then it felt like I had climbed mount everest. It actually took us a year or so to beat, and when i say "us" I mean my family as we all worked together to solve the puzzles in that game. We didn't have the internet, didn't use a hint book and my parents blocked 900 numbers so we couldn't use the sierra hint line. We just all put all our heads together and eventually finished the game using our own brain power. It felt so good. I also had that feeling several more times with other games as a kid: Zelda A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy IV, VI and VII, Super Metroid and Super Mario World to name a few. It was never as satisfying as that first time beating Space Quest, but it was still very satisfying. I miss that feeling nowadays because it feels like games are not designed to be "beaten". That was one of the reasons I quit WoW, it just was a never ending treadmill with no resolution. But it's even leaked into single player games. The new Zelda game, for instance, has an ending to the main story, but that's just a small part of the game. Most of the game is a never ending easter egg hunt of of side-quests, finding shrines, finding wells, bubbol gems, outfit upgrades and of course, the 1,000 korok seeds you will need to find in order to feel like you've fully completed the game. And guess what, your reward for finding all the seeds is a lump of shit, no joke, Hestu gives you a big piece of his own shit for finding all 1000 korok seeds, and it's implied that all the korok seeds are actually korok feces because in the description it says they "smell funny". It's like the developers are are actively making fun of you for spending all your time searching their virtual world for virtual shit. So with newer games I have two choices, I can spend all of the limited time I have left on this planet grinding it all out for hundreds of hours to hopefully get that sense of satisfaction I have fully completed the game. Or just stop playing when I get to the point where it feels like I'm wasting my life. Either way, I never leave the game with a good feeling like I did when I beat those classic games from the 80s and 90s. That feeling of satisfaction is just replaced with the empty feeling that I'm getting old and wasting my life on dumb shit. That's why I enjoy Indie games more. They tend to be shorter, don't have as much side-quest bullshit, and I can feel like I finished a game to my satisfaction when I'm done.

@DrakusRecords Жыл бұрын
@@user-yv4mm6bx3c That's true, but finding all the gold skulltullas doesn't take nearly as long as finding all the korok seeds. I wonder if the devs were trying to teach us a lesson about "greed is bad" with that. And many years later, we go back to a game we love. (For me Fable 2) and we remember all the great times and set out to make a new experience for our said game. Whether it's playing differently or just mix things up. Games are fun, our inner child never dies, not if we don't let it. Games are made for entertainment and fun, have fun.

What I find interesting is the line between 1. Really enjoyable game design to induce player engagement and retention, and 2. Transparently lazy, bordering on malicious design to exploit the tendency to play a crap game that everyone wishes was great. At first glace option 1 seems like it would be a better way to keep players, but it seems in reality that both are pretty effective. At least in the beginning.

this is me with genshin impact. Ive played genshin since day 2. and ive played the game EVERY SINGLE TIME. thats right, every day, whether im sick or busy, ill make sure to play at least 30 mins or whenever i can finish dailies. everything became a chore but in first 2 years it was still fun as i have friends who i can do stuff with and explore with but i noticed at some point they start to quit left and right until i only have 1 person to play with. it struck to me how much tedious this game makes me feel and how much time it consumed from my life and how HARD it is for me to just drop it and walk away, it was really impossible as ive sank hundreds of hours into it and spent plenty, patch 3.0 came, and for some reason i didnt have the motivation to explore it. I still go online to do dailies but i never actually even visited the whole new area even after a month past. I noticed people are having fun with it and how much new mechanics have been introduced to the game but somehow, i felt left out. But instead of feeling sad or jealous, I felt relieved. For the first time of me playing this game, i felt like i never have to be part of it anymore. I dont have to be updated, and be the first to try out things like i used to. I HAD perfect attendance on this game, but this time not anymore, I stopped playing for a day, til it becomes 3, til a week, anda month. Then the next patch came in, i never felt the urge to update my launcher anymore. finally i found a reason to physically not be able to even start the game. and then i felt true freedom. I didnt want to keep playing the game til i end up absolutely hating the game, so i managed to let it go. this was very hard, but i finally did it. turns out, playing a game you love can cause a burnout when played for too much, that's something i never thought would happen to me.

I can't tell you how many games i quit playing because i knew i was almost at the end. You went so far to get there, its been a blast, the story is compelling.. but its obviously leading up to the final boss. You know you have that one last push and its all over. I dont want it to be over yet! So ill put it aside for now.. Never went back and finished it. Its self defeating and stupid, i know. Kinda like when youre watching a great, intriguing comedy movie. Every moment is a laugh a minute. But as it nears the end, you start feeling sad, because its almost over, and there wont be any more fun moments to enjoy. This is what i think makes a game or movie good though. They hook you in so much that you just dont want it to end. But most games nowadays are intentionally made to keep you hooked on them for the wrong reasons. Its either for play time statistics or monetary incentive for the company. Play for so long per day by compulsion, buy our microtransactions, finish for the day and move on to the next game with the same agenda.

Skill based matchmaking has done this to me. I used to love PvP shooters. I enjoy being good at something fun. If I had a bad day, I'd hop on Halo or CoD or Destiny 1 and just slay out. Nowadays I just chase that feeling and I can't have it anymore, because every lobby I get is either laggy, sweaty, contains a cheater, or some combination of those things. Every match feels like high level ranked play and it's not only unfun, it's anti-fun, it is actively _fun repellant_ and ruins my mood when it used to do the opposite.
