From enjoying this film since its release, I'd always jokingly referred to it as directed by Sir Joshua Reynolds. I find your insights and assertions more on target. Good. I haven't seen it in a long while and now I have a reason. I remember being electrified at Kubrick's reversal of the generic wide (establishing) shot, medium shot, then personal closeup, starting instead with closeup of the real human, and then backing up to present their existence/context within a classic painting.

@deceitlegion that's amazing 👏 you were already familiar with Joshua Reynolds. I definitely see his influence here . And I agree with you about those close up shots - it gives this film such a unique look 👍

Short and sweet art school mini-lecture. All your points are well-taken and backed up with the beautiful paintings from the period. A real treat to see the featured here.

Another great video, Shim (hope I spelled your name correctly). It's almost as if Kubrick's camera looks at each scene just as we would gaze at a picture in an art gallery: slowly, carefully, with scrutiny - and from a quiet and contemplative distance. Fascinating.

@stephenwalker2924 yes , you spelled it correctly 😁 also I agree with you about how the camera is framing things here 👍

Thank you, as always for your video. On a side note Gainsborough Pictures, was a London based film studio in the 1920's where Hitchcock made a few movies. Also think Gains burrah rather than Gains boro!😊

Lady Lyndon near the end has the thousand-yard stare which was probably intentional to show how bad the relationship was.

Beautiful Video! I'd like to think in the paint of Diego Velazquez, Las Meninas. I recomend the start of the Michel Foucault's "Las palabras y las cosas" The words and things. Its an amazing reflection of light, paint, art creation and the civilized world we are living. And the principles of cinematic and optical cience. Recently i saw a movie called Blink Twice, with Channing Tatum. Its a good, only good movie. I didnt liked very much the end...but its all right. Well the art of that movie had a a lot of things or references of Kubrick´s film. Also another movie, Kind of Kindness. With the great Willem Dafoe. There is a story what counts that The Beatles approached Stanley Kubrick asking him adapt the trilogy of The Lords Of The Rings.

Who does everyone think the main character in "Barry Lyndon" truly was, if not Ryan O'Neal's titular character: Leon Vitali as *"Lord Bullingdon"* or indeed Murray Melvin as *"Reverend Samuel Runt"* ?
