Bengali is actually a loose collection of many smaller languages. It's very hard to notice the transition from Bengali to neighbouring languages in the border areas. Like 1. In Odisha borders, Bengali sounds more Odia-like 2. In North Bengal, Bengali is intelligible with Assamese 3. In eastern parts of Bangladesh, Bengali smoothly transcends from Chittagongian accent to Rangamati accent and finally to Rohingya. So Bengali is very adaptable too. Infact after standardisation, it has been the lingua franca of the East, from Kolkata to Myanmar, much like how Hindi is for the north. This also properly represents the demographics of Bengal- a diverse array of different types of people, bound together by a common history and feeling of oneness. Standard West Bengali is actually the "Babu-ised" version of Nadia dialect( "Babu" culture was an important part of British-Bengali history). However what I feel is, there should be proper seggregation of West Bengal Bengali and Bangladeshi Bengali. This is so because Bangladeshis outnumber West Bengalis by 10 times, so it's only their Bengali that is being presented to the world. All the money for conservation and culture of language goes to them. We should act just like how Pakistan dealt with Punjabi.
@suhridguha25602 жыл бұрын
you do not out number us 10 times brother, Bengal has one of the largest constituencies in india. The population of bangladesh is like 1.7 times more. It's not even 2 x . And my family was from Mymensingha so calm the fuck down.
@PaulAllen63042 жыл бұрын
@@suhridguha2560 I am comparing only the Bengali population. West Bengal has a lot of other communities too. Also how do I trust Bangladeshi surveys. Inshort, our language is suffering.
@suhridguha25602 жыл бұрын
@@PaulAllen6304 why do you think bengali is the second most spoken language in india? Think about it. it's Indian government data
@PaulAllen63042 жыл бұрын
@@suhridguha2560 What are you saying? I am just saying Indian Bengali is not being able to compete with Bangladeshi Bengali on a global scale. Ofc in India, only Indian Bengali would be considered, and somehow it is the 2nd most spoken language here. But on a world scale Bangladeshis far outnumber West Bengalis. When a foreigner learns about Bengali, the first person he/she will hear is a Bangladeshi. I demand seggregation like Punjabi, so that our version also stands.
@doyalgorubaba67272 жыл бұрын
It really doesn't matter who the money for conservation goes to, because the standard language is one and the same in both West Bengal and Bangladesh. And all the money goes into the standard language. The dialect of Nadia enjoys an outsized influence as the prestige languge. "Indian Bengali is not being able to compete with Bangladeshi Bengali on a global scale." It really doesn't have to. They're one and the same. At least in litereature, music and most other forms of media. I would understand if this argument was coming from a speaker of Chittagongian or Sylheti dialect. They are constantly made to feel like their mother tongue is "bastardized languge", or "wrong Bengali". And they often have a tremendous amount of shame associated with their own dialect or language. This thought really crystallized when I was listening to Axomiya music. It's not really that far off from sylheti languge. But one is thriving, without shame, and the other is not. What I'm trying to say is, if syl. or cht. asked for more funding for their standardization and protection, I would understand. But this just doesn't make sense coming from someone from West Bengal. All the money already goes into the service of your dialect. You're not the victim here.

*Sir, "Hyan" is written in that manner in order to maintain the alphabet to alphabet correnspondence with the spelling while transliterating - but like English, Bengali too sometimes incorporates alphabets which are originally meant to be pronounced in a particular way, but are pronounced in a different way altogether. What happens is that, in Bengali, when the SYMBOLS for the sounds 'y' and 'a' are placed one after another, the cluster is pronounced 'æ' (like 'a' in sad). The 'n' is used for denoting a nasal tone.
