Why does Britain have the worst inflation in the G7? - BBC Newsnight

The Bank of England is watching UK inflation carefully, and the latest official figures show that inflation slowed in April by less than expected to 8.7%.
Britain’s ‘core inflation’ - a measure which doesn’t include volatile components such as energy and food - is the highest of the G7 countries at 6.8% and is going in the wrong direction.
Nationwide building society has warned that rises in mortgage interest rates - closely tied to increases in the Bank of England’s rate that has been raised to try and control inflation - could hit the housing market.
So why is inflation in the UK so stubborn compared to similar countries? Newsnight’s Economics Editor Ben Chu reports.

I find it interesting why everyone gets so concerned about recession and inflation statistics. Inflation has been a constant presence, and individuals have historically turned to investments as a way to outpace it. For instance, stock market returns consistently surpass inflation. I recently heard about someone who invested $121,000 last October and has since grown their portfolio by over $400,000. I'm seeking recommendations that can help me achieve similar returns.

I lived in south Wales, UK in 2019 as a 50+ year old digital nomad. At that time, things like fruit and veggies, restaurant meals in pubs, contact lenses, really good stouts and porters, taxi rides, public transportation, basic clothing (light winter gloves, cardigans, sun dresses), health and beauty supplies (toothpaste, body lotion, bar soap, vitamin tablets), were far less expensive than back in my home state of North Dakota. In some cases, the prices in Newport, Wales (NP20 postal code) were 30 to 50 % LESS expensive than I paid in North Dakota. Now though, my friends in both England and Wales tell me that the rising inflation, food shortages, high cost of electricity, and general expenses for daily living have all risen so much, they are struggling to survive.

The problem is price gouging. A lot of companies raises prices because they can NOT because they must. New economic policies are needed: price controls. Price controls should be implemented for daily essentials using a cost plus model to set prices. Then for items that are deemed near essential, they should also undergo price controls. Once the prices of essential items stabilise, inflation will moderate to a reasonable level.

So if everything goes up 17% don't you think the money just lost it's value because of printing rather than blaming all kinds of other little factors?
@AogNubJoshh
@AogNubJoshh 11 ай бұрын
No it doesn't. If you buy a car part from a foreign country for £100, and it now costs £120, then the price of your car needs to be £20 more expensive to avoid losing profit margin. This isn't caused by "money printing". Apply this to a national scale and it causes national inflation, even if the money supply is held constant (which is certainly has been for the last few years). Concretely, more expensive fuel means that, not only do fuel prices go up, but all products and services that require fuel to produce or deliver (which is basically everything, given that electricity is generated via the burning of fuel) go up. Add on Brexit issues to that (less goods supply because of jobs vacancies and greater costs/barriers associated with importing and exporting), plus the KamkiKwazi budget, and you see how we are the worst performers.

Brexit has made the UK’s companies less oriented to the EU and more towards the US. Being less regulated and more competitive, the US companies destroyed the British economy. On the other hand, the war in Ukraine came when we weren’t yet recovered from Covid creating a phenomenon known as stagflation. When the output from our industries was not yet stabilized, we were forced to increase interest rates to reduce inflation.

However, it is simplistic to blame the Russians alone. What would be better, would be to find a way to stop this war. Why does the UK have the worst inflation in the G7? Because, uniquely within the G7, we chose to handicap our economy with Brexit. UK inflation would be even worse if the Govt hadn't repeatedly delayed measures required by Brexit that are inherently inflationary e.g. post Brexit import checks on foodstuffs that arrive in the UK from the EU.

It's a classic Dunning Kruger effect to assume a simple explanation to a complex problem. Yes, energy and fuel prices are the primary factor, but the reasons why the UK have some of the highest inflation rates in Europe is much more nuanced, and involves Brexit, our response to the pandemic, the mini budget, and crumbling public services from 13 years of underfunding.
