A lot of the feeling of cold is down to perception but the dew point (moisture level) does play a part. I spent some time in Antarctica where the daytime high was minus 25 centigrade and it often didn't feel as cold as minus 5 (as it is here today) in the UK. Generally, if there is more moisture, you will feel the cold more. Also, as the temperature drops below 0 centigrade, the air is less able to hold its moisture. Below minus 20 and the dew point is almost always below 10%. I had a walk by the river this evening and the air was very moist with fog forming above the water. It was chilly but lovely. Thanks as always for your awesome content.

My understanding is freezing air is an exothermic process, meaning it releases heat hence warmer than 5°+
@keithmoss746053 минут бұрын
Damp air will usually feel colder than dry air. Take a tent that has significant condensation inside at around 2 deg c ... it will always feel colder than when it drops to - 2 deg c and the condensation has frozen over and the inside air becomes a little dryer. A lot of people who live the typical suburban /disconnected from a natural lifestyle with all their winter heating etc don't grasp how great winter camping and travel can be in sub zero temps, when there's little wind chill of course.
@jaysparrowhawk93882 сағат бұрын
Apparently one of the symptoms of hypothermia is that you feel warm. Personally I think it feels warmer because the humidity in the air freezes and the air is dry. Happy hopping.

Moisture actually makes you feel warmer, it acts as an instulator. You mentioned there was no condensation, this would be due to less moisture hence you feeling colder!

The reason you had no condensation in the tent and there is very little frost is because of the air mass that is over the UK at the moment, it's called Polar Continental Air, its cold and dry all the way from Siberia, the other kinds of Air Mass is Polar Maritime, this moves over water picks up condensation and brings Snow, Tropical Maritime, this is mild with lots of rain and is our prevailing weather, and Tropical continental, warm and dry all the way from the African land mass... All the best 🎉
@loghoppersСағат бұрын
And that air mass changes every minute?.or daily? Interested as we live this way and see many different winters and they all act the same, but condensation will be there one day and the next not, and then... the day after that, it's back again lol. HAPPY HOPPING 👌🏼 👍🏼
@BillSikes.56 минут бұрын
@loghoppers Its all to do with the weather systems that move over the UK, they can last a day or they can last a few weeks, we got Easterlies right now, cold & dry with no cloud, it'll take a warm front to push it away, when this happens it'll bring Westerly wind from the Atlantic, mild air full of moisture, cloud and rain,

However, there are massive differences between people. My partner says I'm in season in the winter as I'm a warm person and great for cuddles, but in summer I'm out of season.....(silly cow)😄. Better yet, why does the eyeball, seemingly never feel cold, but get something in there under the eyelid, and the irritation makes itself known, in being sensed. A defense mechanism for the eye?, but why not that for the cold, for at least the exposed surface, in that, for all I can tell, it doesn't seem to be a threat to it, in the way something else would.
@claudeclawsonne45102 сағат бұрын
The colder it is, the less moisture the air is capable of holding onto. We definitely do get acclimated to whatever temperature we lie in. We keep our house a lot colder than most of our friends' homes and we feel like we're being tortured with the heat when we go visiting them in winter. I looked through the transcript but didn't see the name of what you were both munching on and debating whether it tasted of cucumber or carrot. I didn't recognise it. I take it it's something exclusive to England?

Body weight does play a part but also genetically some people bare the cold better, being acclimatised is a huge part of it , but the specific difference in temp. You're / we're experiencing is mostly due to Sun activity. Solar flares, clear Skies Because in winter we're in the tale of our galaxy, hence the clear Skies and super bright planets and other things in the night sky.. So in short, following sun weather news is probably as important as any ... lol i took that question quite literally. huh 😂

Temperature is very easy to measure, but has very little to do with comfort. Your body makes 100 watt hour of heat. If you loose more the 100 Watt hour your feel cold, if you can not loose the 100 watt hours you are hot. Radial heat from the sun, of from the ground has a massif influence. It is all very complicated, and difficult to express in a single number. Damp air can contain more energy then dry air. I live on my boat and have most issues getting the boat warm in damp cold air of 2 degrees, than when the air is insantly dry at minus 2. The best heating is radiant heat, heating with hot air is quite stupid and we all do it.... because the thermometer moves nice fast.... but no one is really comfortable. I have said all my life that the Thermostat is the worst invention of mankind :-)
