Dan just gave me permission to be lazy with this approach. Haha. Coming from someone who is a perfectionist at everything she does, the idea of doing less feels so relieving. I’m going to stop obsessing over the right meditation, listening to podcasts and “rewiring” my brain and just do things I enjoy. Anything that comes, I will meet with calm reassurance and go on with my day.

Doing less is key I think in so many ways. I do a Feldenkrais practice from time to time, and with Feldenkrais always the theme is 'see where you can do less'. It's not 'exercise', it's just tiny subtle movements that engage the body part and the brain. The bigger and faster the movement, the less effective it will be. And the same with breathwork, or books, or thinking about what's happening or meditation. More is not more. I don't want to read any more books (with respect Dan) about TMS or neuroplasticity. I get it!! I don't want to watch any more videos or listen to any more podcasts. I don't want to do wuffing and puffing breathwork or meditate for three hours. 20 minutes of quiet focussed breathing and mindfulness works for me. I'm still learning Welsh, I'm reading a fascinating book about slime moud, a single celled organism so 'intelligent' that it's being used in research into dementia and cancer. It doesn't have a brain!!! But it can strategise, optimise, organise. I think there might be a lesson there.
@EllieJ-kd6dl14 күн бұрын
I did Feldenkrais method for a while too... I must have a slightly different 'mindset' to most - as I find if I stop myself from doing the things I love and feel are doing me benefit (- because I don't want my brain to think there's something wrong as I'm 'fixing' myself.....) - then it actually makes me feel worse... When I do the mind/body/spirit practices that I love and that resonate with me - I feel a lot better and calmer just knowing I'm looking after myself and supporting myself the way I want to..... ❤ What's the old English saying - "....one man's meat.... !!" 😁
@kateking395314 күн бұрын
@EllieJ-kd6dl I so agree. There just isn't one size fits all in anything, food, humour, books, people...or health and wellbeing Talking to my brain does nothing for me at all because I don't believe what I'm saying!! Meditation, visualisation, a quiet breathing practice and a bit of Feldenkrais do me much better I understand where my anxieties and distresses come from out of my history, and I don't need to revisit all of that either. I get that too. If I feel calm and centred, fed with nourishing food that suits my body and interested in things other than my issues, I consider that a more balanced approach. It might not make things vanish, but it certainly puts me in a better space to deal with all that we have to deal with. But everyone will do what's right for them. xx

@@PainFreeYou Hi Dan, thanks but I don't want to watch any more videos. I totally get i!! But some people do well with x, y and z, others with a, b and c. To imply that we all benefit from one thing is like giving a cross section of people the same medication and expecting them all to respond the same, or all eating the same food and benefitting from it in the same way. Brains are like everything else in our lives, the result of being ourself. We all have to get where we're going down the path best travelled for us. I'm always ready and willing to learn and appreciate what supports others, while accepting it might not be my way.

This is so true. The problem is exacerbated, I think, by the fact that there are a lot practitioners in the mind-body space these days, all touting various techniques, some of which seem dubious. I mean, Somatic tracking? Do people find it helpful? On the one hand we are are told to teach ourselves to be ‘unbothered’ by the symptoms and train our focus elsewhere, and yet Somatic tracking seems to invite us to dwell on them. Or maybe I’ve got it wrong. I like the single-minded focus of Dan’s approach.
@kateking395314 күн бұрын
There are just too much and too many of eveything in the wellbeing space, a lot contradicting one another, a lot of the US ones fixated on Lyme/MCAS/supplements and keto diets. If one were to try to reconcile all of it your brain would implode!! We can only find what works for us, our body, our nervous system, our issues, our physiology, and see what happens. Nothing is written in stone, so we can always try again.
@Laura-bi5dc14 күн бұрын
Just my two cents, but from the way I understand it somatic tracking is a way to experience symptoms as sensations, ones that are present but not harmful. It teaches the brain that you are not in danger. This is different from focusing on your pains and symptoms and letting them claim your attention. For example, somatic tracking: "It's just a sensation, but my body is okay." Tracking/focusing on symptoms: "My back is killing me. I'm in total agony. I can barely get anything done. I'll never get better."
@CatherineSharbanee-nv5tq9 күн бұрын
I absolutely agree with you and have had this thought many times throughout the journey. Somatic tracking makes no sense and seems to be at odds with everything that is taught. Just puts more focus on something is wrong. We don’t need to dwell on the symptoms.

I have a problem with control. It is almost like emotions or symptoms are interpreted as failure. Another person might have the exact same thing, but the interpretation is different. So it goes like this, the emotion then fixing. I need to stop fixing. It is the fundemental belief of brokenness that is the real problem.

Emotions, nor symptoms, are failure. They are a human experience. Emotions are mean to be experienced, not fixed.

Thanks! This is so true of us TMSers (your videos always calm me, and I wish they were available when I first started going through this 18 years ago). Do you have a video on what being "unbothered" looks like in the moment? After the initial "Ouch!" and talking to my brain (reminding myself of the facts and that I'm actually OK), slowing down my breathing, relaxing my body as best as I can, etc., I feel like I have no choice but to move so stiffly and carefully to continue whatever it was I was doing. I logically understand that my muscles are normal and will relax when there is less tension in the mind. But it's pretty impossible to do something "normally" with muscles that are so tight and locked up. And if I'm continuing on with my day and moving stiffly with pain, I'm sure I'm still teaching my brain that I'm not safe.

Understanding the cause of pain is key in teaching the brain to turn it off. Gaining that understanding of the cause and the solution is more important than the question of exercising or avoidance. Once you KNOW that TMS/Perceived danger is the cause and not a body problem, then exercising will not harm you. It's up to you whether you want to exercise while in pain. My fast start playlist explains it all. DansFastStart.com I also just released a book that will help. PainFreeYouBook.com

I get what you’re saying, Dan. I’ve scaled back drastically. However, because there are many TMS practitioners and many different ways modalities and methods, it’s hard to know what will work for you. Meditation and “light” journaling have been a very important things in my life and an essential part of my own recovery. But for others, both of those approaches might not be effective. How would I have known how important they’d be if I hadn’t made my life into a living laboratory of trial and error?

No, I have a very stressful life and experience emotions all the time. Everyone does. We do not need to have symptoms. Nor do you need to figure out the exact cause. I came to this realization last night. I am always stressing about finding the right method and doing it always right and always consistently (journaling and meditation mostly). Am I picking the right meditation? Am I journaling in a way that’s releasing the emotion I need to release?? Is this somatic exercise the one I need to solve my exact problem, what if it doesn’t tap into the right emotion and I try and feel an emotion that’s not problematic for me, how do I find the right exercise for the right emotion, what if I’m too tired at the end of the day to really feel my emotions and it makes me have more symptoms etc etc. It sounds so ridiculous when I write it out but it’s seemed totally logical in my brain over the past few years.

If "doing the work" and doing a lot of it isn't working for you, sometimes doing LESS is better for the reasons I mentioned in this video. Experiment. Try a different approach. Stop listening to people that say you won't get better unless you do X, Y and Z. See what works for you. Play with this stuff. There is no ONE right way. Ask if the things you are doing are creating safety or not. If not, do something different.

Dan is awesome.. I was constantly worried about my pain and twitching, which is a bad feedback loop. The more I thought about it the more worried I got and the more pain I got. I tried meditation, somatic exercises, reading up on this constantly, webmd, which did not help at all because it makes you focus on the pain too much. Dan is right about indifference that is the magic pill to help you recover. If you constantly think abt the symptoms, or try to fix it all day makes everything worse. I went from a lot of back and leg pain and now Im at pain level 2 or 3. I am not 100% but I am close. Whenever I feel anxiety coming on, I try to do some breathing and grounding excerises but I don't do that 24/7. Calm and indifference is the key. I read Dr. Schubner;s book and it was a good foundation but It makes you do all these meditation and writing excerises, which does not help. I just don't care abt the pain anymore. If I have a twitch or some pain, I recognize the pain and I move on because you. can't ignore it because you will feel it. I hope when I fully recover, I want to be Dan;s next success story. I really appreciate your help. Your approach is the easiest to understand but it does require you to remain calm, which eventually bring you to the key of indifference. Ive had this back and leg pain for 6-7 months with no improvement until I applied Dan;s approach of calm and indifference and moving on with your life. Thank you Dan. You area true saint for what you are doing b/c you really care about ppl who are suffering. Thanks again
