In this episode of 10th Scale Garage, we take a look at the brand that everyone loves to hate, Traxxas. We explore the history of firsts, from the bandit and the Nitro Hawk, all the way up to the current controversy of the Sledge and Arrma Kraton. Are they really hobby grade? Are they only meant for beginners? What's with all the upgrade parts? Are they worth your money? We even tale a look at their boats like the Spartan and M41 widebody. Heck, we even touch on their shortly lived Drone, the Aton. Am I wrong about Traxxas? Do they deserve their reputation? Let me know!

I am a fan of Traxxas, but I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that Traxxas servos are sh*t. The stock 2056 and 2075 that comes in most of their models is a ticking time bomb, and even their actually good servos are far too expensive for what you get. Their 600 oz-in brushless servo is $160 when you could get a Perfect Pass Monster Servo with $900 oz-in of torque for $40 cheaper

No, not so much in my book, trax ass is just a garbage company. They flood the market with crap, (garbage electronics, brittle plastics, gimick over substance) They are as proprietory as they can be, they are sue happy. (They own the word MAXX? I think not.) There cars are good enough to move for a battery, but I've never seen one win anything but drag racing one time. Garbage company selling mediocre junk. That's why I won't even think about a trax ass.

They ALL make great cars, and they ALL make some junk vehicles. Go with whatever YOU can afford and makes YOU happy, but don't listen to the haters. All of that said.... My problem with Traxxas is the whole thing about the lawsuits against other brands like HPI and Arrma. They were just trying to bankrupt their competitors rather than just making better products and becoming the top brand in a fair way. They are just big bullies in the industry and I won't buy their products for that reason. Having said that I do still have a Slash that I bought before I knew what they were like but it's had so many mods that it's only about 30% Traxxas now anyway!

@@getmoney12358 Well what Traxxas did was to put patents on designs like inboard shocks that had been around for years before Traxxas did it but not patented by anyone. Traxxas then sued other companies for using this design even though they themselves had not invented it. They did this for a load of RC car features that had been around for years but nobody had thought to patent. I'd say a big reason people dislike Traxxas is them suing other RC companies like HPI and arrma (particularly when it's over patents that shouldn't have been granted to traxxas in the first place). It became obvious that traxxas didn't want to compete but instead use their size to muscle the competition out of the room. If you've been in the hobby for a while you can see the results of their actions by the lack of brand diversity you see at your local hobby shop, and compare it to how it was around 10 years ago. And in some cases it's directly impacted people who own cars made by the companies who got sued. I mean, I'm not going to say that the reason I can't easily get parts for my HPI car is all traxxas fault (HPI had their own issues before then), but they sure didn't help.

33 years in the hobby. Wrote for a major publication, hosted multiple events, ran a hobby shop owned nearly every single brand out there. I've seen and watched the evolution of traxxas since the fiero and trx10 bullet. I've raced competitive with the blue Eagle ls2, the trx 1, and srt. I've raced a slash, I've beat the daylights out of nearly every single model. Availability of parts is a huge attraction, as is the 30 model memory with the tqi. There's good and bad in everything, in every hobby. Traxxas outweighs the bad with good by a huge margin. Huge.

It’s not really hard to get parts for anything made today with the internet. I live in Portland Oregon we have Tammie’s hobbies a huge hobby shop. I wouldn’t go there for parts. It’s all on the web with the best prices, free shipping delivered to your doorstep in 4-5 days. “Parts availability” doesn’t go that far when you can get anything on the web. Traxxas is for kids since they left racing in 94-95 when they couldn’t beat associated and losi. Traxxas are plastic hobby grade toys. Nothing bad about that. They’re just not a racing brand so racing guys will speak poorly of them. Traxxas has their place and that’s a great place, rtr easy entry and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I know Traxxas has done the lawsuit stuff and all that, but to me the most onerous thing is their requiring hobbyshops to have "Traxxas-Only" stores if they sell stuff online too. Apparently Traxxas doesn't like it if people compete with their own online sales, so if hobbyshops sell more than a certain amount and don't have a Traxxas-only store, Traxxas will stop giving them stuff with their holdbacks or whatever for better pricing. As a result, the closest hobby shop to my house is Traxxas-only. I went in there to see if I could get a traxxas to EC5 adapter and they said, "well, we're not allowed to sell those here, you'd have to go to our other location. However, you can pay me 5 dollars and I will go solder one together from 'repair parts' in the back."

As an avid electronics worker, the properietarity of it all is frown worthy. Personally, I rewired and re-soldered most of the connections on my decade old stampede so I could run my own custom electronics in it. The Traxxas Titan 12t is the pinnacle of planned obsolescence . It’s just an RS-550S with worse thermal properties (so that it wears out faster) and is extremely inefficient.

I prefer the traxxas charging system being so simple while having features like phone app support though if I wasn't satisfied with their stock esc I may feel differently. Course brushed motors are old tech but they still have their place and going brushless with traxxas is fairly cheap with their trade in program. I upgraded my 4-tec 2.0 ford gt to vxl, still have my ford mustang brushed as its mostly a loaner I only drive occasionally but still enjoy driving.

I just got back into the RC world after being out of it for over 20 yrs. I started in my teens back in the 80s when you had to build them yourself. I had the Super Champ ( had a rear mono shock and would always rollover) , grasshopper, Blackfoot, Clod Buster ( I loved this 4wd & 4ws ). Fast forward to this yr, I bought a 4x4 Rustler VXL in Feb and a Maxx V2 in May. I can not believe the difference and how far they have came. My Rustler is fun and fast as hell but I usually brake something every time I take it out. The Maxx on the other hand, I literally beat the shit out of it, like jump into trees at 55mph, off the roof of the house, head ons with other RC cars and just cosmetic stuff. The only thing I did crack on the Maxx was a front bulk head when the tire bead came off the rim and I slammed into a box filled with concrete. Surprisingly it still ran, it was just making a rubbing grinding noise. I do use other 4s batteries then Traxxas and I do charge them with my Traxxas charger and it still runs great and even longer run time. My RC cars from back in the day would never be able to handle what the RC cars of today can.

@@psp420bam Just to set the record straight, a lot of Traxxas's "creative" designs and features are actually highly derivative of other manufacturers' models. Cantilever suspension and telescoping driveshafts debuted on the Schumacher Top Cat, the 3-gear transmission used on all of Traxxas's 2WD models is literally the "Stealth" gearbox from the RC10, o-ring sealed radio boxes have been a staple in the boat scene, on-board starting for Nitro models actually first appeared on the OFNA-Hong Nor Ultra MBX line, and even SCTs in the very style of the Slash originally debuted with the Duratrax Nitro Demon, but didn't catch on at the time due to the price, complexity and lackluster reliability of Duratrax's Axis platform (which the Nitro Demon was based on)

I think the reason Traxxas has a bad name is because they have a long history. In the past especially with their nitro vehicles they made them to very substandard standards. And then they would nickel and dime you to death to get the parts fixed. Or they were put in junk parts in the vehicle knowing that you have to go out and buy the upgraded parts or go broke buying the same parts over and over and over and over again. And then also they didn’t perform well or anything. They didn’t have the best bashers they didn’t have racers that were worth a darn. That said I think the newest generation of Traxxas are the best They have ever been.

I stay away from Traxxas just due to their patent lawsuits. Seems they'd rather sue then provide the better product. Even set up their HQ where patent lawsuits usually win, even when they don't seem like they should. However, their entry level stuff and part support is good and is going to help get more people into the hobby. That's really great. Though the proprietary stuff (batteries, chargers etc.) that you mentioned then tend to keep the new people going back to the same brand. Why try another brand when you have to buy a diff battery/charger.... First "hobby grade" RC I bought was a Helion. The entire brand is now gone due to a Traxxas lawsuit which seemed to be BS. Ended up getting some Arrma's since there were no more parts for the Helion and I didn't want to support the "Umbrella Corp" of the RC world by buying a Traxxas. Now I have 0 RC's. Had just one friend that I could go bash with and he got out of the hobby. Not nearly as much fun on your own. Might get something again soon but probably going to stick with Arrma, Losi, Team Associated (Horizon Hobby) brands. The part support of Traxxas is intriguing but the lawsuits are hurting the hobby so I won't support them.

The reason HPI went downhill is because you guessed it, Traxxas sued them and bankrupt them. Same they sued Arrma because the horizontal shock system, and both times they won and bankrupt company's. That's also the reason I stick with HPI and Arrma because they are great vehicles, and I rather not bring my money towards a company that's trying to destroy other brands that I love.

So i have something to say.... I am a grown as 39 year old man with 2 kids (Girl 19, son 16) My daughter and i collect weapons, and i struggled connecting with my son (magic, yugio, etc.) I remembered that my grandfather always bought me RC cars, and trucks when he came back from a trip. Now these are the ones with the controller on a cable... So nothing like now. I bought a super cheap 16th scale basher truck on amazon, and had a good time. Then i saw adds and whatnot for traxxas. After about 3 weeks or so i went and got a 2wd slash. I kept hearing about all the shock caps and other issues.. But im happy to report that i have had no issues, and run it daily. (i dont bash it though) I took my son to my local BMX track and we let it rip.... I can attest that we both fell in love and now we both have 2 traxxas trucks. We are looking into drift cars next, which is how i ended up here, but let me tell you Thank you Traxxas, you saved my relationship with my son. (at least for now) every night we are outside having a great time. We dont use any of the traxxas chargers or batteries, cause, yeah, no, not paying that much. But i do agree, its nice to know that when something does break, i can go to a local store, and get what i need. .... Cool video. Thanks.

Hi, I just found your channel by accident, and listened with interest to your talk about Traxxas, I totally agree with everything that you say. I have had all the main, and obscure Rc’s throughout my years and to be totally honest, Traxxas is my “go to” Rc these days. I know how companies work, and as you said the ecosystem of Traxxas is very similar to Apple, people want a plug and play life, somewhere you can get parts for all their ‘toys’ and I get it, I really do. I am 66 this year and for the past 40 of them I have been in and out of the hobby in some form or another, it gets into your blood, and i keep coming back to it, and the easiest way for me is Traxxas … I have a couple of other brands, but getting parts when they break, is not easy. Anyhoo….. love the channel, I am away now to watch more of your vids…. You gained another subscriber today for your honest and up front talk. Cheers from sunny Scotland.

Imo theres no value for what you pay for a traxxas cars in the basher department. Value for money is what a lot people prioritize. Then theres durability. Here in where i live my hobbyshop has almost any arrma part i need. Other brands are catching up in part support. For me what was the nail in the coffin was traxxas trying to stop competition with lawsuits. They even sued HPO max a tv channel like what. 90% of their cars are overpriced stuff that Have been recycled for decades.

I agree with the lawsuit stuff, but every company has done that except Chinese knock offs. So there isn't much you can say on the subject. As far as recycled stuff, ever hear the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it"? It's like McDonald's. I've been in this hobby for the last 30 years. I have almost 300 cars in my collection, of almost every single brand but not a single Traxxas. Why? My TRX4 electronics went out the first week, my UDR gave me plenty of problems with the axles the gears and the arms, my Slash broke something every single time I used it and almost the same with the rest of the Traxxas cars I had, So I decided to forget about the brand, especially after the rude and discourteous treatment by the customer service, who also treated me like a fool. I don't hate Traxxas, but I can't stand their business model, their lies and their way of stealing money. Super cheap and bad electronics, plastics, old designs and how they're trying to kill smaller but much better brands are not for me.

I have a smaller Traxxas Slash 1/16, and my 5 year old & friends is bashing the shit out of it, and stuff breaks when he smashes into things, and when tiny gravel finds it way into every little crack in the chassis. So I bought this Traxxas because of the availability of parts, the flexibility of its plastic, the possibility of dual batteries (for longer runtimes), the "training mode" (50% speed) on the ESC, and the easy-to-use batteries and chargers (even a 5 year old can handle it without messing things up). So... my question is, are there any similar (or better) alternatives to Traxxas for smaller kids, 5+ years old?

Traxxas plastics are second to none, they have modern chassis design in the x-maxx and maxx that are well beyond anything else on the market and their parts are cheap compared to others. However their electronics are pretty tame and not up to scratch even if they are pretty feature rich. And over here in the UK their warranty is junk, it is often 'voided' for abitrary reasons and is sketchy at best when concerning UK consumer rights, oh and proprietary shit. Its a nightmare and costly to buy out of the 'walled garden' if you arent happy with it. i completely disagree with traxxas ease of repair. it's the only thing i strongly dislike about them compared to all my other RCs.. take the UDR for example.. its over engineered.. yeah its a GREAT looking truck and drives awesome when it works.. but having to basically completely disassemble the entire car to fix driveline parts that break extremely easily is a pain in the rump... the xmax is another example.. the plastic that holds the main spur gear in place is much too weak and will eventually wear out and your spur gear will move away from the pinion essentially stripping one of the other.. the issue i have with this is... its 32 screws to access the parts necessary to change them.. traxxas nitro: most post 2010 traxxas nitro engines are junk and wont last more than a gallon of nitro without losing pinch or popping a seal or throwing the rod.. they are ported for ease of starting (joke) not for performance and tend to far under perform.. the electric starter motor usually goes up in smoke within a few runs so people usually replace it with a pull starter so people can sit there and laugh at them for jerking their RC off for 20 minutes trying to turn it on.

The "new Sport" had already been discontinued, but I could still get factory replacement parts for it because Traxxas has great parts availability. My next RC is probably going to be an electric Traxxas of some flavor because I don't have anywhere local to get Nitro fuel anymore.

My bandit vxl runs exclusively on $20 M12 Milwaukee drill batteries. It runs roughly the same speed as when it's on my buddy's lipo, if not faster. Battery gets hot, but it's a $20 battery. I've been using them for less than a year so I cannot speak for longevity, but they give me a decent run time. I just cut the cable from my old battery, crimped some simple connectors on it, and stuck them into the M12. The 12v is a little high for the speed controller, but I have not noticed any issues. I originally tried a 18v ryobi with a voltage step down buck converter, and it worked, but was not getting the speeds I wanted.

When I was a kid, I watched traxxas videos and dreamed about an rc car. As soon as I turned 10, my parents bought me an hpi bullet flux. I think I’ve never been so happy, it was beautiful, and fast. Sadly, it was not as durable as what I thought. I think that during the 10 years I’ve owned it, it went through 10 diffs, and the same amount of a arms… As a teen, I barely had no money to fix these things, and parts were so hard to find and expensive. 2 years ago, for my 18th birthday, I bought myself a slash ultimate while visiting Texas with my parents. The difference with the hpi Just shocked me, being able to find cheap parts anywhere, being stronger than the hpi with metal parts and not having disposable diffs… for me traxxas is the perfect balance of performance and durability, and when you compare what you spend in spare parts in other brands, the price is not that high, but that’s just from my point of view.

Dude, Traxxas has earned their reputation as one of the best companies in RC! Let's be honest there are plenty of things to be critical about but nice to see you present "the other side of the coin". I think the biggest criticism of Traxxas though is their Corporate policies, especially their 'litigious tendencies' (they like to sue people 🙄). Protecting your intellectual property is one thing but these guys are ridiculous. I have to say though, this criticism that the Sledge is a clone of the Kraton is total bullshit! The Truggy design has been around for years so, if the Sledge is guilty of copyright infringements, then so is just about every 1/8 scale truggy. I mean, there is only so much you can do with this design. And the differences between the two is enough that saying the Traxxas is a clone is just not true (trying to be nice here, lol). Great video, loved your take on all things Traxxas 👍

Almost all of the parts on the damn thing are the original parts and it's still running strong including the parts I cant replace due to them being retired. So far I've only had to replace a servo, spur gear, and the receiver and transmitter and that's just due to me owning for years. I recently got a TRX-4M and its stupid fun and I'm not really a crawler person. I've got 2 Tamiya's and one of them is about as old as the 1/16 traxxas i have and I've only broken the steering on it and I'm surprised that they still make parts for it.

I hate Traxxas because they are the ONLY rc brand I buy (well used to) that will not ship to my country. (When I order parts/ kits on AMain etc) and haven't for at least a year now. I just get the "Sorry, Traxxas does not allow international shipping" notification at the cart. Thankfully the great team at AMain got in touch and let me know that I can no longer order Traxxas parts because they (TRA) put a stop to international sales permanently. Doesn't matter if its a RTR kit worth $500, or a spare a-arm and body pins. So I sold them all, and used the money to buy another brand for my wife and 3 kids to enjoy. As I refuse to pay double what they are worth in the marked up prices here. Now I give my money to all the other big brands that will service a customer no matter where or how you buy your kits and parts. A lot of Losi, Team Ae, and only just bought my first Arrma from my local store as they can match prices very well internationally. For example a LaTrax Teton which my kids started with are worth $120USD. In my country they are rrp $250USD. So why the hell would I buy one(1) when I can buy two? I wouldn't and wont! Like anyone reading this . . . we/ I work damn hard for my money so I am spending it wisely so my family and I can enjoy more of the RC hobby, not less. Been doing hobby grade RC for 25 years since I was 10, and don't plan on ever stopping. So there's my main reason why I dislike Traxxas, the only brand I now avoid, and my rc buddies do the same. Lots of money lost simply by greed of trying to force people into an inflated market that are not in the USA. And they are indeed bullies, Ive seen a lot of good youtube channels threatened by them for endorsing their products. They are all about money and not for the interest of the hobby from my point of view.

I own a lot of Arma and one Traxxas. The Traxxas is biult very well and I've hardly had to do anything to it. The Arma's keep me pretty busy but the better I get at driving them the more its about performance upgrades and maintenance than constant repair. I think both brands are very good. These two companies definitely seem to take different approaches to design with makes the hobby more diverse. I personally really enjoy driving both brands.

I raced Team Associated RC10T & Team Car Graphite back in the early 90's when I ran them in 2010 or so parts were unavailable so i was afraid of going thru my stock of parts and i did my research and bought a Stampede to bash on and never looked backwards. I have a Slash 4x4 Ultimate, 2 Stampedes, Highly Modified TRX-4 Blazer and a LOSI LMT and that breaks the most.

My first nitro was a Traxxas nitro rustler back in 1998. With the pro .15 blue head engine. I use their fuel. I use their glove plugs. I went through about 4 to 6 different engines. They weren’t all of them then I started using other brands of fuel and glow plugs and never had a problem with their engines again, but I don’t know if I buy anymore of their products not too happy with how their marketing today.

I’ve been in and out of the hobby since 1984 and it will always have a place in my heart even if I just assemble and tinker with them nowadays. To me Traxxas was always the brand that tried to get more kids interested in the rc hobby by having vehicles available already assembled. I’ve always assembled kits and painted lexan bodies so to me anything else would have been more for the youngish market. In Southern California there was a hobby model franchise chain called Hobby Shack and that’s when I had the chance to see Traxxas rc buggies and trucks in person. It was fully assembled so that intrigued me. Upon further inspection it looked more toy grade to me. I never had any experience with them but I acknowledge companies like Traxxas for getting kids more involved In the hobby.

As a 35yo getting into RCs for the first time (always loved them just never really way able to participate in the hobby), I can tell you that while I have played with a few Traxxas and so appreciate the simplicity and overall performance, I think Traxxas brand is suffering heavily in 2024. I have not even considered buying one over the other options, even some older cars, and modifying /upgrading them. I currently have WLtoys lol. 540 Brushless 959A, on 3S and 124017 ordered.

The lowly Traxxas Rustler XL-5 is my favorite RC car ever. I got it refurbished for a hundred bucks and put a hundo into upgrades and it is PERFECT.

I'm 46 now and was always fascinated by RC vehicles, whether it was a plane, car, or boat...i loved it. But i never bought one because of my lack of knowledge of it. Then, in 1999, Traxas came out with the T-Maxx 2.5 RTR. Now i could buy a RTR NITRO truck, pull it out of the box and drive and jump it everywhere! Well, not so much. It barely ever ran smoothly, always either stalling or not starting at all. Of course didn't know the first thing about (tuning)nitro enginges or upgrading parts so after a couple of months i shelved the T-Maxx and stopped the hobby, utterly dissapointed. Then, electric cars became stronger and more available and when Traxxas came with the TRX-4 i fell in love... i was on the verge of buying it untill they came out with the High Trail version.... i immediately bought one, and i never had so much fun with an RC truck ever. Climbing, jumping, crawling, it does it all. Everything is stock! motor, ESC, servo's... and nothing broke so far. Now i have two TRX-4 High Trail Edition's and am ready to put upgrade parts in them. But this is were i get mad: There are so many people out here on YT "explaining" how to install an upgrade, but usually forget a step or two so you end up with more quesrions than answers, all the while sotting on a part that you don't know how to install... same goes for parts on the TRX-4 where i'm not sure if i have the right model or version; i only learned yesterday that the axles on all 1/10 TRX-4's are the same. But i had to learn that by combing out every exploded view on the Traxxas site, because it's never mentioned anywhere. Right now for instance i'm sitting on a Hobbywing fusion pro 2300kv motor. There are some channels that provide installation guidance, but nobody mentions if the darn thing is still compatible with the Traxxas lipo-plugs... Honestly...those sort of things bother me, i spend a lot on parts, but a whole explanation to get the truck working is hard to get...
