The Colonial aspect is one thing but the media is the main reason we all want to beat England these days, the media hype the English teams up so much, plus in alot of instances, degrade the opposition. Writing this from Trinidad, we have seen this many times when England play the WI.

As an Indian, the cricket matches with Australia is more important. Winning against Australia is great but pounding England is not really a cricketing win but a lot more. It is nice to see them make excuses. The ball spun a lot or the ball bounced a lot, wickets kept low, and whatever they can think of.

Maybe because of how other boards and teams were treated when England was controlling the world cricket , as when in 1983 India entered the final of the WC in England, the president of BCCI asked for xtra tickets for his board members but was denied by the then organisers. At that time BCCI and India existed only to make up the number of teams playing cricket thus was not respected much.

Is it though? Most players across the world will want to play at lord’s because there’s so much history there. Even just visiting lord’s is ridiculously special.

My thoughts on this as an Indian. It’s because the English love whinging and seldom give credit to others if they beat them. It’s always excuses with this lot. Conditions, outfield, pitch, ball - it’s always some other thing’s fault. Case in point - Michael Vaughan. As an Ashes winning captain, you’d think he’d have a more nuanced view of cricket. But he’s always blaming the scheduling or the pitches when India wins. The English feel they have a monopoly on cricket, that their rules are sacrosanct while others are just cheating to win. When England make seaming pitches that suit their weather, it’s ok. But when India make spin-friendly tracks to suit their home conditions, India is suddenly corrupting the game as if spin bowling is some alien part of test cricket. They criticise the IPL because they can’t compete with it and accuse india of corrupting the game, but then they go ahead and launch something like the ridiculous Hundred that no one watches. It’s this holier-than-thou attitude that makes everyone want to beat them and rub their noses in it. The Aussies are fantastic competitors in comparison. They play hard and give credit where it’s due. Players, media and fans alike.

As an Englishman living in Australia (I'm a half breed) when England is playing there is an arrogance in the players/management/media that they don't back up with performance, for instance "BAZBALL". It has been blown up and made into such a big thing (it's embarrassing) but in reality there has been sides doing this since before WW2, Bradman scored 300 in a day, the aussie and west indian sides of the 70s, 80s and 00s blowing sides away for fun. But no, "England made cricket entertaining again", hit and giggle might be fun for a while but if you don't keep winning it means bugger all. When Bazball can win them a WTC then maybe some people might change their tune, but it won't happen until the English players pull their heads in and stop talking absolute crap to the media or for the media to stop hyping them up in the papers with stupid rhetoric. Any English supporter during the euros who thought they would win the comp (with the easiest run to the final you'll ever see) were deluded and every nation can see it except the English.

There are many reasons for hating England. But here's just one. Englishmen dominate the commentary team in several sports. For many games there are nothing but English commentators. And they show little or no interest in the opposition. They also talk the English team up, whether they deserve it or not. England, unlike many other nations, seem to consider that the world beyond Newcastle, Bristol and Dover, doesn't really exist.

Socio-political hypocrisy, mis-education regarding Colonialism (i.e. thinking Churchill is some kind of hero), exaggerated sense of self-importance, sense of entitlement, media arrogance, linguistic illiteracy (expecting everyone to speak your language and not being willing to learn other nation's languages), neo-colonial mindset where you still act like you're in charge of things. There are more reasons, but if you're looking for more comprehensive reasons then just study the history of the Republic of Ireland and you'll know why England is so hated in sport. As an Australian I often over the years just wanted England to give us a decent game. I was thrilled to bits when England won the Ashes in 2005 because the Australian team was full of champion players who were arrogant bullies on the field. But the current Australian team is full of nice guys and a lot of the England players (and commentators) are insufferable. Yes, they are the American tourists of cricket. The modern players aren’t responsible for colonial history, but they are responsible for their hypocritical whinging about the spirit of cricket.

The most Indians got pissed at any incident in recent times was when Marsh put his feet on the world cup trophy, but we can't really hate him for that. The guy's a fluffball we love him. Give us someone to hate. I blame the IPL. It's because of the IPL that people have gotten attached to the overseas players and players themselves have become a lot amiable. @@nikhilkay1 interestingly I don’t think there’s much hate for Spain in South America I guess in the same way Canada, Australia etc don’t have much hate for Britain (outside sports, which is viewed as a brotherly rivalry) Honestly I highly doubt people in Poland or Norway are deciding who to support in football based on colonial history, it’s down to the fact that media need someone to hate on and the British, who created the sport, declared independence from Europe (some would argue it’s because we thought we were better) and much more, makes England the perfect sporting villain for the back pages of tabloids. The media will paint any side as villains to get more viewers and make more money Perhaps I’m underplaying the colonialism factor, in Britain it’s very widely accepted to be wrong, but not something anyone ever thinks about, people say it was a long time ago and the colonisers were the tiny privileged minority while the average Brit suffered too In Britain everyone’s moved on but in the colonised countries I guess there’s still a fair bit of resentment

Tribalism is powerful, culturally as an Australian born approximately 40 years after Bodyline I was still brought up to hate the English team for what they did and for their arrogance and professed view that they were the arbiters of what constituted cricket. It is still prevalent today in the last Ashes series with English statements about moral victory and their hypocrisy about the runout of their wicket keeper despite evidence that same wicket keeper had tried on more than one occasion to do the same thing to other teams. Followed by the born to rule behaviour of the Lords members towards the Australian cricketers subsequently just shows how much English cricketing establishment still believe they are born to rule cricket.

Well one issue sometimes is the belief in England encouraged by the media that everyone raises their game against them in all sorts of sports when there often isn't much evidence to back it up. Even when there's some substance to it like with the Viv Richards example quoted here there are often other factors that are ignored. Lots of batsmen having better than average records against England during the 80s and 90s is at least partly explained by England having a relatively weak attack for about 25 years and many of the world's best players having plenty of experience in English conditions due to the money having been in County Cricket at the time. There also seems to be a general ignorance or lack of interest about other teams' rivalries with each other which also doesn't help. I wouldn't say there's nothing in it at all, there may even be a bit more to it where cricket's concerned than in other sports, but certainly since everything got a lot more professionalised it just feels like something that's overstated in our media and fan culture which means that sometimes other teams' fans will enjoy their teams' victories against England a bit extra without it having much to do with actual performance. I'm also fairly sure that when I was growing up in the 80s Lord's was usually the second test of the summer, not sure how far back that went though.

Hated ‘cause the gap between how well they play vs how well they talk up their own team vs how well they talk down the opposition is in serious mismatch..:: ..plus wheel out the “spirit of cricket” when results don’t go their way. Plus annoying commentators who find everything wrong from food, accomodation, weather, pitches, officials in every country apart from NZ and Australia.

maybe cause england has won so little in 50 years of cricket, yet they act like freaking Australians. People might not like Aussies but they damn respect them. England on the other hand, won a drawn world cup, Not to mention half of their team is literally guys from different country

Yeah england is honestly just bad at cricket but act like they are the best. Australia has literally won the same amount of icc trophies than them in past 3 years than England’s entire history lmao it’s pretty funny. And India having a trophy drought for 11 years still has more than them. Also South Africa who are known for being “chokers” won a icc trophy before England and so did New Zealand back in 2000. Why is England even part of the big 3. Don’t deserve to be in it. West Indies has more trophies than them.

This very recent. It's not just cricket. English media is insufferable. Until recently the players kept their heads down but they started to believe media. In cricket the Stokes-McCullum regime has adopted an attitude that's more Oz than Oz but unlike Oz they cant back it up.

Very odd that Kimber talks about England looking down on poorer teams. Aussie played NZ at test level only for the 2nd time in 1974! They weren’t considered good enough by the magnanimous Aussies! Some Englishmen have a superior attitude! Not all. Other countries are also guilty of being superior. Look at Germany in the 1930s. It’s just the English are better at being superior than everyone else. 😊

I mean really? Just look at the way you call yourselves the "saviours of test cricket" when you have started playing aggressively?! I mean you guys always scoffed when the other teams already implemented this strategy in the 90s and 2000s(eg. VVS laxman, Sachin, Hayden, Gilchrist) and now just because ben duckett scores a 50-60 it's groundbreaking?! 😂 You know the only legitimate win you've got is the T20 WC which was under Buttler's captaincy who has been, mostly, a gentleman and criticised England's wrong decisions for the first time from a major England player in power(the decision to get them back from the IPL). Tells you, that being humble is the way of winners, not bullshiting you way out of the last place in the WTC rankings as the saviours of test cricket 🤣

Only at the Olympics is the USA a dominant force in the 'global sporting arena'. Outside of this they barely exist on the world stage because their domestic competitions are large enough to be self sustaining - so much that they export domestic products and loosely claim world supremacy. If they actually switched their focus from the domestic to the international competition they would easily eclipse the UK as the arch nemesis and do so quite rapidly. But, it's hard to hate on a sporting nation who's never been that competitive. They might be supreme politically and militarily, but they just aren't that relevant for truly global sports.

It's because of you british commentators I started to want them to fail. Your self righteousness and the way you guys are "reinventing" cricket and always trying to come up with stupid excuses. No sportsmanship at all. England used to be my second fav team. Luke Wright, Kraig Kieswetter, Bopara, KP, Morgan, Ben. When KP and Eoin were playing together. I drew parallels with my fav duo Dhoni and Raina. I like them as a team but I can't see you guys talk down on other teams.
