Why Does Everyone Love Super Mario Galaxy?

I’ve heard somewhere that replaying Mario Galaxy is like taking a shower. You never want to get started but once you’re in, you never want to leave. I just replayed Galaxy 1 and 2 back to back after 4 or 5 years of not touching them and enjoyed them so much I played them both to 100% completion. Some of my favorite games of all time, but it’ll be a few years before I do that again so the experience stays fresh and not a linear, repetitive slog

I remember it taking hundreds when I was a kid, but I guess muscle memory just kicked in and it wasn't bad this time around. The boomerang bros at the end were usually the run killer as far as I remember. Thanks for asking!

The way the atmosphere, soundtrack, and gameplay all blend together. The moment Mario flies towards a galaxy, the player is greeted with nothing at first. A void surrounding Mario, as he continues his flight. Only for the planets to come into view as Mario gets closer, showing off all the locations the player can visit, inviting them to explore what exactly goes on in each galaxy. Finally followed by a triumphant piece of music the moment Mario lands, signifying the start of a grand adventure and the player being able to live out all adventures they imagined.

I like how progression is handled compared to sunshine with just needing X number of stars to beat the game instead of specific ones like in sunshine

​@@B0ssguyYou don't have to get every single star to beat the game. You only need 60 Power Stars to reach the final level & finished the game. You do have to get an Grand Star to unlock certain areas in the hub world. But you don't have to do all the galaxies & missions to proceed. Every galaxy contains certain number to open up the level and your free to do any levels or missions you want. The rest are totally optional & only for 100% completion.

I find Galaxy to be the pinnacle of linear Mario that hasn't been topped in scope since. Galaxy has the varied themes, excellent level design, banger OST, and magical atmosphere/storyline that make it such a unique experience. While Galaxy 2, 3D Land, and 3D World are amazing in their own rights, Galaxy hits a peak that the others don't quite reach. The levels play a lot more with gravity, the hub world is incredible, and it is the most consistent throughout.

Ironically, Galaxy is the least linear of all 4 of those linear 3D Mario games and the closest in its design to 64 and Sunshine, to the point where I'd say it's in a sort of hybrid middle spot rather than being strictly in one camp or the other.

The thing is with Mario galaxy is that it pits an Italian Plummer made by a Japanese game studio against the back drop of space. One of the first shots you see in space is Mario on some sort of tiny dwarf planet against some sort of large nebula or planet

Super Mario Galaxy was my first game ever, and to this day the mainline Mario game I hold in high regard so much that I'd place it amongst my best experiences in the series, right up there with the earlier eras of Mario RPGs (before the "blandification"). It's a Mario game that really was NOT afraid to be grandiose, providing a gigantic universe full of unique life and biomes, while subtly adding more to its narrative beyond the usual "Mario does good" shtick through the various civilizations and the Comet Observatory also having their own histories that are hinted at in the former's case and told through an optional yet lovable story in the latter's. I think going from concept alone, Odyssey feels like the only other mainline game that wanted to be this grandiose, and I'm more miffed on that one because of missed opportunities to use the "world tour" theme to revisit familiar locations (which the concept art shows they COULD'VE), whereas with Galaxy there's nothing of the sort holding it back; it explores a whole unknown *universe* afterall. And so, Galaxy is a game I hold dear to my heart as much as Paper Mario TTYD. (PS: regarding the Wii games of other Nintendo franchises, Brawl was amongst my first games and I can say for sure that the way you put its reputation has become sort of... outdated? It's gotten quite an amount of recognition for its one specific mode alone making it feel more like a crossover than even its supposedly-praised successors. I also think it's worth noting that, while not an *immediate* firstparty IP like Mario or Zelda, Kirby *also* hit a peak on this console, so it's not just Mario Galaxy that's a highly regarded firstparty Wii title; Return to Dreamland is up there too)

It's just like No other Mario game, The gameplay is fresh yet familiar, it feels like a proper evolution of the 3D formula and even has some elements from the 2D games! (That would later be more embraced in 3D land and 3D world which are Equally as amazing as these games, in my opinion at least) And the Story feels sorta like a more Serious interpretation of the typical Mario saves Peach storyline, like it's not just Peach that's in Danger, it's the Entire Kingdom (Which was actually similar to the manual of the 1st mario game, where the reason Peach is kidnapped is cause she is the only one with Power to save the kingdom, since all of the mushroom people are turned into blocks and plants that only she can save!) It's an amazing experience

I never noticed just how important the cinematography was to the aesthetic of SMG until now. It feels way more like a movie than the other games, which are way more wacky and abrupt.

Brawl was a great game but terrible for competitive play. So it has a bad rap with the competitive Smash community in particular as it became more influential and we've moved farther from casual play.

I'll defend the Wii entries of certain series any day of the week. Brawl's single player content feels most substantial out of all the Smash games. Super Paper Mario has a cult following for having the best story in any Mario game. Skyward Sword is like Mario 3D World in that it was released in the time when fans wanted the series to go in a different direction, but they're easier to appreciate now that BOTW and Odyssey exists.

Maybe it's because I grew up in the '90s, but I don't really go back to Super Mario Galaxy. It would be nice to play it again though but after I beat it when I first got it on my Wii when it first came out 2007 and I forget exactly when I beat it it must have been maybe like a month later I'm not sure, I didn't really play it that much after that. However perhaps I would have been really happy to actually just play it again anyway Maybe from the beginning instead of just trying to unlock everything. Super Mario 64 is the game I really love to go back to the most when it comes to 3D Mario. But then again I grew up with that game. And it's aged really well. Clearly Super Mario Galaxy has aged really well too, but I just don't have the fond memories with it that I had with Super Mario 64. I'm not even know if the memories are even that fun there I just enjoyed it so much. But honestly yes I would love to play Super Mario Galaxy again. Sadly I've literally never played Super Mario Sunshine. Hopefully I'll be able to play that some point

I've been playing Mario games since the 90's with Super Mario Bros. 1-3, All-Stars & World. But unironically, I never played 64 cause I didn't own an N64. My cousin had one and let's me play it. But I didn't get very far. Sunshine was the first 3D Mario game I've own and didn't have an good time with it. Than I got the Wii and played Super Mario Galaxy for the first time and I was amazed. The game was so good that I replayed and 100% it as both Mario & Luigi in like 4 or 5 files because I love everything the game has. It wasn't till Virtual Console where I re-experience 64 & played through the way and quite honestly, I didn't love it nearly as much as other people do. It's an good game. But it definitely hasn't age well at all. Galaxy is way better than 64 & Sunshine and that's coming from someone who played Mario since the NES days.

I find it curious that some comments say things like "maybe because I'm from the 90s I'm not into Mario Galaxy" (this was the most recent post I read, I'm not being specific with anyone XD) however... I I'm from the second half of the Eighties, that is, when I played Mario Galaxy, I was already an adult a long time ago... and Mario Galaxy is my favorite Mario game, and one of my favorite 3D platform games too. I think that age or time of birth doesn't have much to do with whether you like a game more or less, but rather your expectations. Maybe the game's gimicks weren't to your liking. or maybe it's the soundtrack, but the age... I don't believe it. I still find myself discovering MODERN games that I'm a fan of to this day (for example, the "no kiseki" series by Nihon Falcon. Anyway, that's what I wanted to comment on XD. Mario Galaxy is one of my favorite games (and this is coming from a 40 year old grown man, who has been through practically all eras of video games) and I hope that Nintendo will one day make a sequel (which in this case would be 3 :P) ps: the example in the begining was only that: an example. i hope nobody be mad at me ^^'

I really gotta agree with Kiro on this one. To get it out of the way, Twilight Princess beats out Skyward Sword, but I do think of it more as one of the GameCube Zelda games. To go along with that, I actually wouldn’t disagree with the notion that Breath of the Wild is “the Wii U Zelda game” while Tears of the Kingdom gets to be dubbed “the Switch Zelda game.” I outright hate Mario Kart Wii and think the previous two games at least were definitely better. Kirby’s Return to Dream Land is good, but as a hardcore Kirby fan, I still think there are plenty of better Kirby games from before and after (examples including 64, Epic Yarn, Triple Deluxe, and Planet Robobot). At best, Donkey Kong Country Returns is just lesser Tropical Freeze with arbitrary motion controls, and even then, I actually just prefer the original trilogy. I still like Galaxy 2 fine enough on its own, but I find that it has a lot of weird downgrades following Galaxy 1 that lead to me ultimately disregarding the game as obsolete. I mentioned Epic Yarn, and yeah, I would sooner use that game as an example of a pinnacle Wii entry (it does more to stand out as its own thing compared to Return to Dream Land). So what, 2 games (Galaxy 1 and Epic Yarn) that stand out as examples of top tier Wii entries in then established Nintendo franchises with many games? That’s not very impressive to me and it’s one of the primary reasons that I don’t think very highly of the Wii.

Great story+amazing atmosphere+melodic soundtrack+fun and varied level design are some of the few explanations I can think of. Out of all the 3D Mario games I played, Mario Galaxy definitely ended up striking a chord with me the most, and I was more than glad to revisit it many years later in 3D All-Stars.✌🏽

I really like the game's music, progression system, level design, and many other things. The game is interestingly magical to me. Everytime I play it I want to play it more. This game is basically what Odyssey could've been for me. The capture mechanic was cool, and most of the music tracks were strong, but Lost Kingdom could've been done a bit better. Overall, Galaxy is definitely my favorite next to TTYD

Super Mario Galaxy is one the best platformers. It's indeed one of the most unique, and beautifully crafted games ever made. The music is indeed very enjoyable to hear, and I've played this game on the Switch. Hopefully Nintendo will make a third Galaxy.

I thiught the game was a nice time for a linear style game. Playable Luigi was great! It introduced Rosalina to the series. But even I think its overrated. Mario was stiff to control, the spin move was ok and the gravity mechanic didn't cooperate at times.

I get your argument but I don’t think it’s really fair, Mario needed to be slower and have a less advanced move set the game was made for a Wii remote and Nunchuck and if Mario moved super fast and had more mobility you would just fly through all the smaller planets which isn’t the point of the game, the whole point of the game is to take in the scenery of Mario on all of these diffrent planets and diffrent people and do it for in a cohesive way unlike a game like Odyssey which real struggles with a cohesive structure, I also think the spin move was a good gimmick as it fit the level design perfectly and gave you some margin for error, it’s not as flashy as FLOOD or Cappy but it allows for a more traditional Mario experience , Now I don’t think the game controls are nearly as good as Odyssey but I think they are still good and better than 64 which can feel really dated at times while moving, the gravity for me has never been an issue maybe a couple times a play through Mario will do something funny but overall they control well especially when the game was ambitious as it was, I get your arguments but their is so much great in the game I just think no other Mario game has been able to top

I’ve been trying to figure out why people love this game so much, it was by far my least favourite 3D Mario until Odyssey came out. The movement is nerfed, the levels are one directional and not to mention f**king motion controls. I never found the setting interesting, and I hate how the camera is limited. I want to enjoy it because all I hear is good things, but it’s just never clicked with me. I remember getting it on launch with my brother and we were just so disappointed. I’ve been playing Sunshine and 64 mods to scratch that 3D Mario itch ever since. Maybe I’ll play it again one day. I haven’t played it since 3D All Stars. I tried it then and was still disappointed.

I have an odd relationship with Super Mario Galaxy. I love it, but I hate the Wii. In my opinion the Wii is one of Nintendo's biggest travesties, despite performing well I think it was the turning stone of the greedy and soulless Nintendo we have now. Then again, it has some great games, and Super Mario Galaxy is one of my favourites. I prefer the Switch release in that 3D All-Stars compilation, if just for the option to play it on the go AND without the awful and repetitive motion controls.

I think it’s the best game in the series, the biggest complaint I see is Mario is boring to control and it’s too stiff, the thing is the game was designed for Wii Remote and Nunchuck which was very limited on how you could make him control, and the thing is Mario really couldn’t have a large moveset because it would ruin the point of the game, your not supposed to run through the planets as fast as possible it’s an atmospheric game and it masters that, I think the level design is great while not open ended like 64 A lot of the levels aren’t much smaller and their are substantially more, the music is the best in the series, I think the game on original hardware is great but on Switch it plays even better, Allows Mario to control a little more normally and makes the game look even better, I think the game does so much well and I think it’s cohesive while still feeling fresh throughout the game which is difficult to do, I also think the Comet Observatory is the best hub area in the series, it’s simple has the best progression and has a lot to do in it, Overall I think it’s the best game in the series but I don’t think that’s really an unpopular take

I always loved the atmosphere of Galaxy even though from a gameplay perspective it's easily my least favourite 3D Mario game. I've never stood still in other 3D Marios just to exist in a level. The music and art direction is incomparable in any other game of this series.

Playing Galaxy after Galaxy 2, I realize it has a setpiece problem where it focused so hard on using new mechanics over and over to get used to them without changing them up enough in levels to be creative. A lot of Galaxy 1 suffers this, especially after later games. Galaxy 2 fixes this for the most part, to the point that if I want the atmosphere and a full playthrough I'd play Galaxy 1 and if I just want some fun levels or to play it in chunks I play Galaxy 2.

@@mecxu761 well yeah, but there is some charm to playing with the wiimote and nunchuck. If it came across like i was saying that i didnt like this port, that's my bad. This is definitely the version of the game i play the most due to the convenience of the switch! There are just these little things that dont really hold it back from being a great port, but rather from being better than the original. Things like how the gyro is less reliable, how mario gets confused and walks in circles more often than he does in the original, lack of speaker on the joycon to play all the noises the wiimote did, ect. Nothing that makes the game bad, but things that still give me a reason to play my original copy over the switch port

it was a good game but not as good as mario 64 or mario oddessy because it is more linear and has less replayability .with a game like mario 64 it took a long time to explore everything despite the levels being small there were secrets everywhere. while in mario galaxy you just warp from place to place its cool at first but gets dull after a while

This game is honestly my least favourite Mario game. I didn't pay much attention about the atmosphere. And about the ost, i remember only like 2 or 3 tracks. The gameplay felt really slow to me, and the controls are really off compared to the other 3d mario games. I somehow love playing 3d world or 3d land. But in my opinion, mario galaxy is like, Super Mario 3d Land in space with better graphics and less good physics. I also hate how you go to a level, it's painfully slow.

Calling Brawl the "ugly duckling" of the Smash Bros series is revisionist history. It definitely has the second highest mass appeal in the series behind Ultimate and has the best single-player content in the whole series. We also got Mario Kart Wii, and Wario Ware Smooth Moves, which are some of the best of their respective franchises. Kirby's Return to Dreamland is also a strong entry for the Kirby series. Your hook for this video could've used more time in the oven.

Mario Galaxy isn’t a good 3D Mario bc it fails at tying course clear and sandbox gameplay together. That being said, it’s still a beautiful game that deserves to be remembered. Also Peach’s Castle solos the Comet Observatory any day

It’s not trying to be a sandbox game and 3D Mario doesn’t mean sand box, the game does a great job at linear progression and the Comet observatory is way better, the progression is way better restoring each area the music getting more and more complete as you collect grand stars and it is way more interactive than Peaches castle, the NPC’s don’t just feel forced and the Luma’s actually feel like they live their and not just their for the point of the game, the rooms also allow for a more straightforward way to get into levels which allows for way easier replay ability, if you like it for personal reasons than that’s fine but I think the Observatory objectively does a better job
