I've not had experience with newer ones but I've dealt in about 20 at least, years ago i went nuts for one, sold it made 500 quid, it came back with a noisy box, cost 500 for a rebuilt box, another one, no compression, head warped 30 tho, got it done up, came back with pas pump gone, heavy gear change, had a 63 plate cooper diesel, been running it, left it ticking over, chain came thru top of engine, no noise prior, blew 2.5k on that, a country man, same 1.6 bmw diesel engine, bad chain, sold my last one at Christmas and I'll deffo not buy another. Your mates obsessed by them, virtually every sentence it's when I was at mini, for me he's taking you the wrong way, but as I've said I've not had post say 65 plates, plenty of cars to buy that are a lot less trouble, I'm just prepping a volvo estate and you know it'll be no trouble, end of the day it's just a product to sell, so you want the easiest, most reliable and profitable, the buzz of oh yeah it's a mini is soon forgotten when it's back with serious issues, just my view anyway.

Oh yeah we hear you. James is very passionate about them that's clear, and the fact he used to work at MINI and he's not just a regular fanboy means he can see the wood for the trees. They're not perfect, but that doesn't mean everyone needs to avoid all MINIs! He's helped to inform the ones we do buy- which is why we're going for the 3rd gen 2014 on cars now. But we're not becoming a specialist- rather sell a few good ones than hoover up all the nightmares because we don't have anything else left to buy.

What a varied mix of views and what does seem to be a lot of dislike for Mini , however you could pick a different car each week and will always get the haters from those with bad experiences and those tend to be the ones who shout loudest. Me I can only speak from my experience and my wife and I have had 4 F series and she is possibly getting another in the next 12 months and have had no complaints with the cars. I would only buy the F series though , the previous generations are long in the tooth now and like any older car likely to get problems.

F-Series really is under rated and fantastic buys. It's a shame the second gen issues are still lingering in most people's mind even a decade on. People just can't get past the idea MINI is just one car

I’ve just traded my F56 in after 8 years, the *only* expense I had outwith servicing and wear and tear was a fog light rotted out and the nav screen packing in, both cheap easy diy fixes. On my phone I have a pic from 1983 of my pals and me cutting up a totally rotten 1275GT, it was 2 years *newer* than my F56 😂 And what did I trade my F56 for? Another F56 😉

Again it comes down to generation. They get lumped together as one car when really the 2014 on are so much better and actually rank 3rd for reliability on the JD Power survey. Nobody ever bothers to make that clarification.

I've sold a load of Mini's too and the newer 2014 onwards model seems to be good news. The older models had a lot of issues and I wouldn't waste my time buying one unless it came in part ex and I could inspect it before buying it

Yeah F series from 2014 onwards are a much safer bet- far more refined and reliable. Older ones really are getting on a bit now- I think we forget just how old they are.

At 7:50 when you say get the chain done on the 2nd generation Mini, do you mean replace the timing chain or get it re-tensioned?

Replacing it. It tends to be the plastic chain guides that also give up so best just to get them all done in one.

10:00 It was the B48 that replaced the N20 in about 2014 (I think)...I think in 2013 they were fitting both engines, so check V5 to be sure or I think you can check the vin (but can't remember what code you are checking for on vin)

James says best thing to do is ring a BMW parts department and ask them for the part number of the cylinder head- you can usually cross reference it then if you're really stuck! Otherwise they might even be able to tell you themselves.

You don’t need to check the VIN, the second generation R56 had the N20, the third generation F56 from 2014 on had the B38/B48 BMW engine

To be fair all cars have moving parts and there all have there own faults so no car is better then other car it all boils down to as the car been serviced in my own experience don't buy a car without s/h thats when the problems start to emerge genuinely mini are a good car 😅

I have done couple of minis between 2007 to 2010 and all are under 100k, engine wise good if regular maintained, they should done better with lights, (fragile and annoying), wrong diagnose and wrong mechanic make wrose situations, whole system they integrated to electric version with touch of mechanical process, for example cooling fan operated by ecu and also if ecu not getting signal from temp sensor regardless of faulty/good sensor , fan will turn on all the time as failsafe mode, this supposed to protect engine, but mechanic try to fix those with changing elect tensioner, tharmo, temp sensor etc etc and it never works like that (one scanrio but 2 different process of diagnose), changing timing chain but not changing vacumme pump/turbo seals...those are compact engines so any leakage from seals are deadly ... despite all negtive of about, i like it the way design and drive .....

Listen for timing chain rattle, it's at the gearbox end, I've heard them at 60k, one of mine went and destroyed the engine without warning, it's the bmw 1.6 diesel fitted till about 65 plates, Google it and you'll see some horror stories, it'll not really get to 100k without a chain kit, there's 3 chains, and it's a massive job, bmw didn't build it to be a service item, it's like a 1600 quid job.

Yep Minis buy old models they're not great but most new cars are junk, you get good and bad with the cost of living people cant afford to keep fixing crap. Plastic Manifolds on Toyotas are a good example of junk every manufacturer has problems.

I've had loads of rovers and gearboxs were always OK tbh, 1st engines were chrysler, don't know about the box, but bearings usually went, who services gearboxs these days, bet you guys don't (!)

James here: It was the 5th gear layshaft in the midlands box that faulted as it was basically a 4 speed box with a the 5th crammed in. If they get laboured a lot in 5th gear it causes issues. It just wasn't up to the job- especially when the performance and JCW kits were added.

Instead of minis I’d say get some heavy gear in not land rovers , stuff like m2’s M3’s m4’s M5’s , AMG mercs or a cheap good lambo . Also my mate has just got a job at Wilson’s new flagship site deeside so can check what your interested in , if you bought a car from there and they do motobility you could get a subscriber to drop them off and run a swapper back Into the auction …. Just saying

The people best qualified to comment are the owners; as an unfortunate ex owner I can categorically state that they are an absolute pile of sh*t. I bought a one lady owner, ex motability ,3 year old low mileage Mini One. Cut out at every roundabout, even with stop/start switched off. Knock from front subframe (they break due to no suspension travel) and then water pump started leaking. Px'd it after six months after a row with DVLA as someone had cloned it and written off the clone. Spoke to a guy who changed front brake pads on his and the car was then written off as the main wiring harness had broken due to body flex when he jacked up the front. WHAT THE F*CK.

@@cardealerpro 2008; the most depressing car I have ever owned. After initially telling me I would have to pay for a DVLA inspection to establish mine was the genuine car Swansea then said that it wouldn't be necessary and the issue was fully resolved. A couple of weeks later at the Derby Mercedes main dealer where I was unloading the heap it transpired that it was still listed as scrapped with the DVLA.......! I have never owned a BMW and, because of this experience, I never will in the future.

Sounds like the 1.4 MINI ONE- that one we should have mentioned as it's definitely the worst engine. They replaced it with the 1.6 in the ONE from 2010 onwards.
