In October 2023, scientists were estimating the “disappearance” of up to one billion wild crabs from the usual habitat in the Bering Sea. This represents a 90 percent drop in the crab population. Why?
@0Shanna10 ай бұрын
Probably a few factors, but you can bet on these two for sure: 1) There is quite a lot of illegal hunting (poaching) done all over the world. 2) Climate change. The sea current, temperature, oxygen and nutrient levels change because of it, so it could be the opposite effect as seen with the crabs in Norway or the parakeets; making their original habitat mostly to completely unlivable because of climate change.

And that's also a situation where Florida keeps misrepresenting how they became a problem in the first place. It wasn't people letting pets loose, it was, largely, due to the state refusing to allow people to return or secure a breeding facility for the pet trade during hurricane Andrew in 1992...you aren't going to have enough pythons for them to breed with random releases of pets. It's normally only fish and small bird/mammals that have enough of a release population to have a chance for getting a foothold population.

Oh... I was wondering why there is so much crab meat on the market. It's difficult to get real crab meat in some grocery stores, and even crab salad and crabcakes, one has to pay attention to be sure you are getting real crab. Just catch them all, cook them up and eat them - the ones who are in locations where they shouldn't be. I don't eat crab ever since my high school reunion when they had crab legs. They tasted waterlogged and salty - so much so that it mad me sick, and I never ate another crab again... Well, one time I bought crab cakes and ate that, and it was delicious. But only once.

I grew up on the California coast and after my mother divorced my father the fishermen who frequented the cafe near the harbor where she worked used to bring her gunny sacks filled with Dungeness crab. I hated it, the sight of it, the smell, gagged on it if forced to eat it, and when Mom said you are not getting up from that table till it is all gone, a huge plateful of crab meat, I just waited till she was in the other room and took a tea towel and wrapped it all up and shoved it as far as I could into the heating duct. Somebody had to have found it, after a few days it would stink to high heaven, but nothing was ever said to me and I was never forced to eat it again. God, I would dump salt on it, ketchup, anything to kill the taste of crab. Even to this day I avoid Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco because they boil crabs in huge vats down there for the tourists, I could hurl when I get within three blocks of the place.
