A comparison with for instance the F1 fleet regarding emissions would be interesting to see. E.g. kg of CO2 emited per kg transported per km

agree, the data is important. Unquestionably shipping is far lower emissions than flying, but how much in this case?

@@dstarley actually with how little cargo they are moving on such a large ship i can't guarantee that this will have lower emissions than flying per ton moved. Ships only have low emissions at scale. However they are doing more than just moving the cars as it is also doing science for PR reasons soooooooo ...... meh

​@Kwesi Lawrence Actually we carry 72 containers , 10 Spark Odyssey 21 cars, 8 hybrid BMWs, 1 Cupra Formentor, a forklift, three trailers... but good guess! I live on the ship full time btw ;)

0:52 - Caption says "Liverpool" but the name on the Hangar is Cammell Laird which is in Birkenhead not Liverpool. That's like saying Middlesbrough because people might not have heard of Hartlepool. They're different places, on different sides of the river. At least the coordinates point to the Birkenhead docks.

It is impressive how seriously Extreme E takes the concept of green racing. I imagine the travel time is relatively long when the cars and equipment is transported by sea. I don't know the time interval between the races, but I assume part of that is affected by the transport time. How do I get a job on the ship?

@@Dagnarmet Well the writing on the ship was at least green. I get what you mean though, racing is indulgent and will inherently not be carbon neutral. However, sports, competition and battles between teams and people will always be a part of us. Even if the steps we are taking today seem pathetic and pointless, it at least gets us started in thinking of how to make this worldwide lusts for entertainment less harmful to the environment than it is today. Motorsport will always be seen as one of the biggest oxymoron when it comes to making green, as we all associate motorsports with powerful engines, which obviously consume a lot of fuel. Making championships with electric cars is a start to ease our comfort with motorsport that is fun to watch despite not consuming all that traditional fuel. If we wait to start "green racing" because it's not green enough, we are just postponing a switch we are going to have to do at some point anyways, so it's best to just start, and take it from there you know? The thing that impressed me is the choice of transporting as much as possible with ships, which are less damaging to the environment per gram transported compared to flying or driving. I'm not trying to be all "yay, electric cars and shipping by boats is perfect for the environment and we're all saving the world". I just think it's good that organizers are at least thinking about the environment at all and are doing things like this. Even if this series is almost made just for PR to get people hyped because it's green.

@Kwesi Lawrence Along with businesses within businesses, for example, Louis Hamilton's company is providing the catering....Whatever income they are generating - it's not going to the wider world. Look at who owns the company that makes the cars as well...

Does any transport make it into St. Helena anymore? I heard only smaller jets with skillful pilots, and sometimes Lady Luck, can land at their land strip.

sorry for the late reply but I believe that there is still some ships that supply both islands of ascension and st Helena that depart Southampton and I think there's a tanker as well I believe that aircraft only transport essential goods not sure how often they fly in though

Couldn't watch the finals of desert prix live although I have followed this new series from the beginning because they didnt stream it live on youtube. Im still mad because of that 😪😪

They don't stream the finals on YT - at least not for those countries where they do have some kind of TV/streaming Deal - naturally. You can't stream for free on the tube, when someone else pays you to broadcast.^^

Did you fit any serious exhaust gas cleaning systems at all? LSFO is commonly used in shipping since it is also mandatory in many areas and HSFO is not allowed any more at all. Champange would be ULSFO. You could have fittet an SCR for example or rotor sails. A great opportunity would have been to fit fuel cells instead of classic diesel generators for power supply in port, or do you always use a shore connection? I think you could have done much more to reduce the carbon footprint of the vessel. Hopefully you'll do so in the near future. I think you're not running short on money and it would be great if you would make the ship a prime example to show to the whole shipping industry what is possible.

ahh...I love BS knowledge and ideas from people outside of the industry. Dude, just for your information this vessel most likely have medium speed 4 stroke engines which run on Marine Gas Oil (MGO) - ISO 8217 DMX or DMA fuel oil type which have max sulphur content of 0.1%. Your LSFO HSFO or ULSFO refer to residual fuels (heavy fuel oils - RM grades) which I do not think this vessel was using at all. As for marine grade fuel oils You won't be able to find suppliers for fuel oils with sulphur content way below 0.1%...You can always try to park your vessel near some shore petrol station which sells different grade of fuel oil with sulphur content at 10-15ppm level, although I do not think station's storage will hold enough fuel to fill vessel's tanks for one intended journey, plus it won't be economical at all. So called MGO DMX and DMA grade fuel IS the CHAMPAGNE of marine fuel oils and it is currently widely used all over the world. What they have done on the vessel, is probably overhauled the engines and auxiliary equipment mainly TO COMPLY with regulations regarding emissions control for NOXs (less likely to be more GREEN - that is just PR BS). They must have replaced components for fuel injection systems for their engines (not redesign and modify their systems to use some space technologies) just because all those old engines, they do not like low sulphur content fuel oils (lack of lubrication, increased wear of injection pumps and injectors). As for SCR, do You know how it works even and when it kicks in? It kicks in only at higher loads because it requires higher exhaust gas temperatures to break down urea to ammonia. If the vessel will steam at lower speeds to conserve fuel and "emit less CO2" this system will not be in use at all. Plus even running it like that will create several problems as over the time degradation of engines performance thus increased NOX emissions. Fuel cells? Are You serious? Check how efficient are your fuel cells now - between 40-60%. The rest of the energy goes into the funnels along with the CO2 and some NOXs as well. I think they should stick to more eco friendly diesel engines running on fossil juice. Not to mention I do not think anybody makes those fuel cells for marine industry. Yes of course there are some new vessels with so called hybrid propulsion systems but that is different story and have as well some negatives as well. I have seen recently some job offer for this vessel for Engine Room Department, although just by looking at what kind of people - soy experts and soy intellectuals are all around that organisation, in social media as well and probably on the vessel, I think I will stick to my current boring job, so I don't have to deal with that GREEN BS every day....
