I would like to add that when you mutate on top of Ivy, she stops being legendary, and can therefore be copied and cloned. What's scarier than one Ivy doubling up your spell effects? A dozen of them.

There are blue and simic copy spells that do this job better but the singles are much more expensive. Mutate is basically the budget way to pull it off.

@@DATskorge while there are simic and blue copy spells that skirt around the legend rule, most of them are only once. Mutate not only synergizes with Ivy on its own, but also allows you to use larger volume copy spells, such as Rite of Replication. An Ivy deck should absolutely run cards like Irenicus's Vile Duplication, but not running a card like rite of replication would be suboptimal imo.

One other thing about the resiliency part is that while everything stacks on Ivy, you can spread the auras/mutates around on your other creatures, so you can have an entire field of chunky soldiers while Ivy looms large and in charge.

Also, it can pop off so hard with spells that copy creatures. Mutate Ivy so she isn't legendary, then just start casting cards like Cackling Counterpart on your secondary creature to make a copy of both things. Flash it back or cast another one, and now you've got an exponentially growing board of mutated Ivys.

This was actually really well articulated, and 100% accurate. I don't have an ivy deck, but i do have a Tawnos the toymaker mutate deck that runs ivy in the 99, and when she resolves, the deck just hums. She is SO good.

Pro tip: if you're like me and playing an Animar Mutate deck with Ivy, keep multiple copies of the mutate cards from your deck to keep track of all the mutate triggers. Keep in mind that Sawtooth Demolisher and Souvenir Snatcher are extremely difficult to find.

I built my ivy deck to just copy lots of spells, cause stacking auras and mutates onto her just makes her a massive removal target - I'd rather use Saint Traft for enchantments cause he can't get hit by (Targeted) removal. (also there's tons of cards that say "buff target creature, draw a card" which Ivy then copies, drawing you an additional card. so running 20 1-cost buff&draw spells works wonders!)

I had an Ivy mutate deck and I can confirm that you can only win by dealing psychic damage to you and your opponents, since you can mutate things on top of Ivy, making her no longer Legendary, and you can then make persistent copies of her. I had to scrap the deck because it's impossible to keep track of what each Ivy truly is. even Arena has a hard time keeping track of Ivy if you make mutated copies.

As an example, let's look at Menace. If your opponent's Voltron stack has menace, 2 mana gets you a Raise the Alarm type effect, you get some chintzy chump blockers, problem solved. Hell, they could lose to their own Dowsing Dagger because sometimes that one turn of damage means the difference between a T3 or 4 knockout and falling off curve entirely. But with Ivy, menace alone means it takes FOUR blockers to stop both Ivy and your other Mutate/Votron stack. And that's just Menace. Just having a second Voltron stack for the price of one means that when you hit something like Colossification, Ivy is handing out lethal commander damage AND someone else is getting slapped for AT LEAST half their life. Which means that same player dies next turn while Ivy just bitch slaps the last player. "Win the game next turn" for effectively 9-ish mana is pretty good.

Make a non legendary copy of your original target and Ivy, so now instead of doubling your auras, mutates, and pump spells, you triple them at least. You can get into really complicated turns for your opponents to follow. Had to take my deck apart because it was too much for me to follow myself.

I love my Ivy deck. I got back into the game during Ikoria and I'd always been looking for a way to make Mutate good. She is it. Make her non legendary, start playing copy spells with some token doublers out, and she gets completely out of control Stuff like Clear Shot, a bulk uncommon bite spell, is a machine gun with multiple Ivys. Pouncing Shoreshark might as well be Cyclonic Rift. The only downside is you absolutely cannot play the deck without a set of dry erase cards. It's impossible to keep track otherwise

I mean the best voltron commanders are those who get around the mentioned problems - persistence, speed, focus. For some examples: *Skullbriar* - Literally 0 persistence problems. The only limit to how big that fucker can grow are the 21 commander damage after which people stop being willing to give him new counters because they are *dead* *Bruna* - You *think* Bruna would be better in WG instead of WU but then you realize with blue you can just mill yourself and if you ever get to attack with her she will instantly send someone to the shadow realm. Not to mention that unless you face grave hate you also have 0 persistence problems because the moment she gets killed and comes back the next time she blocks or attacks she will be level 16 Kayle all over again. Ticktock, motherlover, *ticktock*

Also with ivy. Auras count as tokens. So if you have a token doubler like parallel lives it will double the amount of auras ivy gets. So that snake umbra would be 1 on the original cast. A copy on ivy and another copy on ivy. If you mutate ivy and copy her. You'll get 3 ivy's and 2 of whatever else you copied. Vesuvian Duplimancy is insane for this effect. You can just start targeting ivy and allow the copies to get out of hand. Yes it only allows for 1 ivy copy to pop out at a time. But if you get 2 or 3 copies out and then say quasi duplicate with a parallel lives on the board you're not gonna have an easy time losing. Especially if you have umbras to block kill spells. I also like running my ivy with recursion and land untappers. It also allows for some stupid combat tricks. Like one that gives +2/+2 and allows you to put a land from hand onto the battlefield. Suddenly that spell is FREE (1 & G) if you have 2 lands in hand.

Parallel lives and similar do not double the auras unfortunately. When a permanent spell resolves as a token, the game does not see that as a token being created, so replacement effects like that don't apply. You can use something like Twinning Staff instead to double the copy trigger and get extra copies that way.

I run Ivy as my main and I know I am a source of pain. EDH is much slower obv because 3 opponents at 40 can take awhile if no one else is running shenanigans but good god, is Ivy Aura Mutate deadly in Brawl on MTGa. I do not know if or how I can view my stats but the amount of turn 3-5 wins I have with Ivy is unmatched to any other deck I’ve ever tuned. And I had an Imoti deck that could reliably win turn 5! Simic is busted and I love it so much

The only real weakness of Ivy is that it copies EVERY single target spell. If someone casts a single-target kill or exile spell, unless Ivy has hexproof or shroud, she's dying, which means that you NEED lightning greaves on her so you don't accidentally get rid of the work you put into building her up if you do a single-target removal or flicker spell (admittedly, blue and green have fairly limited options for these, but it's still possible)

Mutate secks are slow. This is why my mutate deck uses 1/1 unblockable creatures as the base for mutate. I don't get as many mutate triggers, but multiple unblockable stompers gets hard to deal with.

It very easily becomes a 3/2 flier for one mana. And it can be a 3/2 flier on turn 2 ready to swing. Even when it’s not you still get a 1/1 for 1 mana. Not terrible. But when it does it really gets you ahead In EDH it’s almost unplayable. It was only really good in 60 card formats

Ivy really is bonkers. I played without commander damage because I found my deck was way too consistently capable of stealing games. Irenicus's Vile Duplication to make an extra copy of Ivy and growing my board at thrice the speed was good, but when you put Colossification on Ivy and another flier, you can easily start eliminating players fast. Even worse if you run Blighted Elf, so you can take players out with Infect. But what about removal? Well, when you're in the trust fund colors, you're not without countless ways to protect your threats.
