This is exactly how swimmers train. I just finished watching a video on The Stoltman Brothers’ channel and their guest was training to swim three days straight. He was lay on his back, engaging his core and throwing a medicine ball in the air with one hand and catching it, it was to train his hand and shoulder to resist the water on the throw movement, and then pull the water behind him once he caught it. It makes sense to me. Muscle memory can be applied to more than one situation.

@@zedddddful this is largely a myth. Bad posture produces injury. Uncoordinated movements produce injury. But bad "form" in the traditional isolated movement sense does not. Your muscles are designed to work together in exactly the kind of chained actions that are shown in this video. Nothing he is doing here is creating an increased risk of injury. The video is absolutely correct. He is training his muscles to fire in sequence to produce maximum peak power. This strengthens stabilizers and auxiliary muscle groups which actually reduces injury risk. A very talented trainer explained it to me this way. Your body adapts. So long as you control range, and load so as to build up to a more intense level of movement form doesn't matter. Start with a light load and reduced range and move it through a certain path as aggressively and explosively as you can. Just move the weight. Don't worry about form. Your body will develope form on its own. Train to increase load and range. This is how you create true power. Because by doing this you not only make your muscles stronger but you also improve neuromuscular control allowing your muscles to work together more efficiently and teaching them not to fight against each other.

Just here to say, simply because someone has status, or prestige, doesn't mean you shouldn't question them. Argument from authority shouldn't be taken at face value, if you think something is wrong approach it inquisitively, people don't get some where by knowing nothing, but that doesn't mean everything they do/say is correct. Lu's form makes sense for his sport specifically, but questioning why he does it the way he does is perfectly reasonable. Comments are acting like this question was utterly insane....

The funny thing about “form” is that it’s literally pointless. All form is, is basically how a movement looks to such random douche bag watching the movement being done Different techniques and training protocols serve different purposes and there’s also the fact that leverages and body mechanics are individual as well. A “perfect form” rep doesn’t exist because it’s not a fucking thing lol. Any person who says “that’s not perfect form” is simply an inexperienced lifter who doesn’t do any kind of training outside their weak ass gym bro hypertrophy split

Bad form is an interesting topic. I personally don’t see many issues in terms of bad form unless it involves the knee going past the toes I have found that this has created issues in my patella. Also doing super heavy benchpress with bad form in regards to locking up my elbows has contributed to issues with my deltoids. However, the explosive movement shown in the video is actually really good for the sport that he is involved in.

I think what people forget, when making these comments is that most studies seem to be fairly recent. Even if there are sure-win guides to bodybuilding and strength training, there are always new studies, new methods and new techniques always coming out. A whole generation used to think aerobics was they key. Then another generation thought steroids were the way to get bigger. Then we had farmer-style workouts and strength training. Don't judge, always be open, and understand that as much as there is no guide to the human brain, there is no guide to the body. We just work off what we have seen to work, all hits and misses, isolating the wins and using that to progress further.

Xiao can squat nearly 700 lbs despite weighing less than 180. Most men twice his size will never be nearly as strong as him. This is because he is specifically training to develop total body strength & power *without* causing the muscles to grow. If he grows, he will no longer be in the weight class he competes in. So much of his training is ballistic; moving the weight as quickly as possible, recruiting many muscles at once, rather than slowly moving the weight to target only one muscle. This allows him to get stronger & produce more explosive force without gaining size.
