Knee pain often comes on when standing for too long. If the knee pain doesn't improve, the standing time tends to decrease over time.
Understanding why knee pain comes on when standing and walking is really important so that you can keep the knee problem from getting worse.
Knee arthritis, knee meniscus tears and knee cartilage damage are usually the diagnoses behind the knee pain when standing.

Hey Katt! Sorry to hear about the pain you have in the front of your legs :-( We're glad to hear that you got some relief. But it sounds like you might have something else going on if wearing pants is affecting your pain. You might have nerve irritation that is causing the pain in the front of the legs and causing you to hurt all over. A knee problem usually only hurts at the knee and won't spread all over. You could have both problems combined. We don't have videos for widespread nerve problems at this time.

@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear your left knee hurts after sitting CricketNewJersey :-( This sounds like you've got a moderate to severe muscle imbalance - over-dominant quads and weak glutes. The over-dominant quads will set up extra pressure at the knee joint that causes pain when sitting as well as stiffness when getting up. The stronger your glutes get, are they automatically firing or do we always have to consciously engage them? Thank you.
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Great question James! Theorithey should automatically fire the stronger they get but that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes you do need to consciously fire them during exercise and walking. For some they might always need to consciously make them work for the rest for the rest of their lives. But they might fire a lot easier after having dedicated a month or 2 to making them work consistently.

David , as I use the gym a lot , I think you hit nail on head with overly strong quads , and right knee ache and gets hot !I do lots of squats, should I leave off them and maybe concentrate on pure glute exercises ,hypers,glute bridges ,bands etc And try to counterbalance the quads more ? Thanks in advance jaff x
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely yes, stop all quad focused exercises and get obsessed with getting glute strength. You'll still work your squats with some exercises, but avoid isolating them. We go into fixing this imbalance in our 28 Day Knee Health & Wellness Boost Program. It's a 100% online and on-demand program for improving knee health. It's packed with exercises, advice and coaching from Dr. David. You can learn more about it here: www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/knee-health You should really consider doing this program to fix your knee ache!

AZlternative to legpress: One leg squat without eeights and maybe hold onto something in order to take pressure of front of thigh so to focus on letting glutes do the work?! Not geting too low seems preferable and avoiding full staightening as well as NOT getting below horisontal (not getting too low); I am aware of kneeovertoeguy goes very low, but that can be very dangerous as it create a lot of pressure on the knee ala using lots of front thighpower, which we are warned against here in the video and wich seems as good advice..
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Great insight Carsten! Single leg squats might work very well for the more fit person. But they have to have great balance. Someone in their 50s or older might not do a single leg squat. The reason for not going too low is because the lower you go, there’s in increased chance of using the quad muscles and having them dominate the motion. If you train your glutes to work in a high squat, then over time you should be able to squat lower while still using your glutes throughout the squat. We like knees over toes guy! We think it’s a good concept for squats, especially for the more athletic person. But his information might be too advanced for someone who is 50 or older with severe knee arthritis or a meniscus tear. We would not recommend those people doing full depth squats. The high squats we showed here are a much better starting point to get glutes working and correct the muscle imbalance.

Dear Dr. I have a problem with my right knee I tried to push my bed mattress into place by standing and push it into place with the side of my right knee, now I can hear a grinding in my tight hip is there anything I can do to get my right knee straight. It does not pain walking nor standing but it looks ugly when standing it looks like the letter "K". Thanks in advance.
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Uni Bird, sorry to hear about your "K" shaped knees :-( It sounds like you have a joint alignment problem in the hip and/or knee. Your best bet is to start doing glute exercises as these help both the hip and knee. Here is a video of glute exercises you should start with: “Top 5 Glute Muscle Exercises For Knee Pain” kzbin.info/www/bejne/hInHdJ2KZ7angKM If these exercises don't loosen up the joints and improve the situation, you might have to see a healthcare specialist to investigate what is going on in person.

Hey Mercedes! It theoretically should help, but alone taking bi-flex or bioflex likely won't fix the knee pain. You'll have to address the root problem which is likely a muscle imbalance.
