Just moved into a new house, ensuite stinks, a maintenace cupboard in the ensuite houses the SVP and I suspect the existing Durgo has failed as someone has placed some polystyrene over the top of it. Stubbled across your vid and super grateful for the description of the toilet syphoning the smell, hadn’t thought of this, will replace durgo tomorrow. Many Thanks 👍

I designed and manufacture this valve, its available in Black / White / Grey / and Olive Grey. Its available in both and internal version and an external version which has a fly screen.

Great informative video. We have moved into a house that is only 6 years old but not lived in in the last 3. Discovered a foul smell in the en-suite… we can see the SVP going up, thing is we don’t have an attic. There is a very small space between the ceiling and roof but you can’t access it. Any thought on where to try first to local the AAV? It isn’t an outside vented one either as there is no visible vent on the outside.

Those durgo's or AAV's can fail, so don't assume that it's not the culprit.. Usually a quick fix to swap it over. Good tip!! Glad the toilet doesn't smell...until after use 😂

I got FLOPLAST PUSH-FIT AIR ADMITTANCE VALVE GREY 110MM installed in downstairs toilet . It reaches cistern height. It was all working fine . Just 3 days ago since hot weather started , i am having bad smell in toilet. I checked rubber ring inside valve which seems fine. It is just a month old system.

One tip...when you purchase one of these...keep it upright! Tells you so on the box, so you do not damage the seal by laying it on its side. It also tells you to lubricate with silicone prior to use.

Thank you for this... I'm hoping this could be the solution to our problem but... How do you find out where the soil stack is and how far up it goes please? Our house has 2 sets of toilets so could we have 2 soil stacks in 1 house? Is it a case of starting to look in the roof space and working out way down? Cheers and well done!!!
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder Жыл бұрын
It's unlikely that you have two soil stacks, but not impossible...start in the loft and have a look, but also check your roof outside your house. If the pipe goes up and out of your roof to the sky, then there's no need for a durgo unit or anything else. The blockage is likely to be elsewhere in the stack. Best of luck!

Hi, just stumbled across your video as having an issue with a foul smell in a newly renovated bathroom. The builder has exposed the boxed in SVP and replaced the Durgo valve but the smell is still there. Can you suggest any other possible causes? Thanks
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder Жыл бұрын
Is the durgo above the toilet, or is it close to the ground? The higher it is, the better. In fact to work properly, it has to be higher than the toilet (and the more elevated it is, the better they work). It may be possible to extend the pipe and lift the durgo higher, and then box in the whole lot

@@OfficeBoyBuilder thanks for the response. Finally got to the bottom of it and was a small gap at the join of the toilet waste pipe meeting the soil pipe. Has been sealed up and the smell is gone. Amazing how such a small thing can cause such a huge issue.

I had a soil vent pipe going up into my roof and out ceiling but had a bathroom renovation done and the plumber removed the pipe - cut it to a short length capped it and boxed it in. Since then I was noticing my washing machine not draining properly and dishwasher not rinsing. A different plumber said he thinks it’s because the air is getting trapped which would have normally escaped via the soil pipe?
@OfficeBoyBuilder

Yes I would agree with that...

@@OfficeBoyBuilder but I also notice my sink gurgling when machine is on and some water backing up - could it be drains too?
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 8 ай бұрын
Yes that could be a slight clogging in the drains...it could all be linked - without enough airflow, bits may get blocked, which leads to more gurgling.

Thanks for this! Having the same problem, go out and come back home and the whole house stinks. I think our soil stack is boxed in through the house.. Can I ask, is it highly likely that the Durgo would be in the loft? I've looked before but could see nothing (so much fiberglass everywhere).. Do you know if the builders could have boxed it in, or is that not generally allowed? Grateful for your advice.
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
Builders do all sorts of crazy and unadvisable things sometimes...not necessarily because they're bad, but because they don't know/think. It's not impossible that it's boxed in, in the loft, which isn't right, but even if it's not, the fact it's covered in fibreglass is not good either. The durgo should be at the highest point, otherwise they run the risk of foweling. Can you see that your soil stack is definitely not rising up through the roof/tiles? If not, consider adding a section of pipe onto the top of the existing soil stack and putting a durgo on that, so it's visible above the insulation.

@@OfficeBoyBuilder that's what I thought too. Can't see it on the outside, so must be in the loft - covered. Will go and have another look. The other thing I'm worried about is that it has been boxed in at a lower point in my downstairs toilet which backs onto my living room.. It usually stinks in that corner too. Bloody new builds.. Never again! Cheers for the swift response, and loving the vids!

All the best, finding the source! It may be necessary to open it up and do some investigation...it will be worth the pain, and Plasterboard/skim can make things look good as new.

You do need to have at least one fully venting soil pipe to open air in that run you can’t rely on just the durgo.

Hi - i'm currently having problems with weird smells in our house since having an AAV fitted and trying to figure out if that is a problem or at least related to the problem. we have a very similiar setup to you in that we have a single SVP cut off below the roof and an AAV fitted on it - there appears to be a lot of conflicting opinions as to whether this is actually OK or not and whether an SVP venting into the open air is needed or not. I asked on Reddit and several people said an SVP going into the open air should always be present and an AAV is asking problems in that setup. any thoughts on that?
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 11 ай бұрын
I think that's entirely fair to be honest... it's a far better set-up to have a SVP open to the air, but it isn't always possible, hence why AAV's were invented. Our smells have stopped, for the vast majority of the time (98% of the time). It also helped to ensure that your sewer line is clean and clear - that was a factor for us which made a difference.
@scottp4357

@@OfficeBoyBuilder yeah we had an SVP originally but there was a leak around it - we were presented with the option of removing it and installing an AAV by the roofers who said it was a better solution...now we have a weird smell in the house, thanks lads :D i keep reading a number of sources saying that as long as your neighbours have SVPs, which ours do you don't _need_ one so i guess we'll see how it goes if i can get to the bottom of the weird smells.

Not entirely sure your information is correct, the vent pipe should vent to atmosphere additional toilets maybe used with a AAV or Durgo not your mains, if you don't have a vent to atmosphere the pipework could eventually fill and you may well be in the shit, so to speak
