First off Cole, I love you and your wonderful wife"s videos. I live in Houston Tx. and i"m 76 years old so I don"t get out as much as I would like. I have been catching and cooking yellow bass for years and in my opinion are some of the best tasting fish out there. I like to either scale and fillet them or better yet, the old school way of just scaling and cutting off the head and gutting them before frying. They are just as good steamed with a good sauce or seasoning. Keep the videos coming I love them. I also love the snake and other critters you interact with. super!!!

I'm from Chicago, moved to Bryant Arkansas end of April first of May 2018. Used to fish a lot and yellow bass was just one of many species we would fish for. Now I need to find fishing spots here in Arkansas that I know nothing about. But I'll find places to fish, I know I will. Y'all have a great channel, I really like watching y'all fishing. Never seen yellow bass here in NC but we do have an over abundance of white bass and white perch in Lake Tillery and Badin Lake. If I had access to Yellow Bass, I would definitely eat 'em! As a coastal fisherman, I'm in the habit of putting my knife through the gills of any fish I plan to eat, so they bleed out. That helps with the taste, but I'm convinced, some people don't actually like to eat fish. I'm aware some species taste fishier than others, but I like to eat fish so I expect it to taste like fish. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!

I always used two hooks attached to loops in the line with a weight below them on the end. I would catch two yellow bass at a time this way. I used small plastic crawfish lures with natural scent as jigs on the rig. For white bass I used a Sassy Shad and would sometimes catch a flathead catfish too! Yellow bass taste like a cross between crappie and bream. They`re thick and easy to filet so you get lots of meat even from the smaller ones. In the Spring we`d catch thousands off sandbars in the Sabine River on the La/Tx line. Baby crawfish was their favorite bait but I learned to catch them on jigs. People would often leave after running out of bait and I`d still be tearing them up on artificial lures.

I think that "Yellow Bass aren't fir to eat" is, for lack of a better term, a "wife's tale". I have people I meet on the water quite often turn their noses up when I tell them I'm targeting Yellow Bass for the table. However, I don't believe that most of them have actually ever tried them, and instead, are simply repeating something they've heard. I target them specifically in a small lake near me that is full of them, some of which are up to 1.5 pounds. Another great thing about them, as you mentioned, is that they are normally prolific where they do live, and there is no size or bag limit. Therefore, I never feel any hesitation keeping a mess of them. Great video. Keep up the fantastic work!

I eat yellow bass frequently and I clean them with an electric knife. I never remove the slight red stripe on yellow bass and have never had them to taste anything but delicious. I definitely remove the red streaks from Stripers and White bass as they will leave a strong negative taste to the fillet if not removed, but yellow bass red streaks do not., in my opinion.

Thanks for stopping by! Yeah they are only native to central US along the Mississippi River and it’s connecting drainages. They taste a lot like white bass. There is an over abundance of them here and it’s because a lot of people do not really harvest any because they don’t consider them a very good fish to eat. We want to fish the St. John’s someday! Looks to be a very beautiful and “fishy” place!

I've eaten yellow bass, and loved it. I've eaten every kind of bass I can think of off the top of my head. All were good. But in fairness, I am not the least bit hard to please where food is concerned. I like just about anything. There are many "trash" fish that are very good to eat. Most, I think, get this reputation because they aren't fish anglers commonly seek. I think Asian carp is wonderful, and so do a lot of people who eat it in restaurants under a different name. Even creek chub passes the taste test when people don't know what they're eating. And have you ever tasted sea robin? They're wonderful. I've yet to meet anyone who likes fish at all who didn't like sea robin, but many won't even try it because the sea robin is considered a "nuisance" fish. They grab your bait when you're after something else. What really puzzles me is when people say they don't like to eat a given fish because it tastes like fish?!?!?! This is like saying you don't like beef because it tastes like beef. I eat quite a bit of tilapia because it's one of my wife's favorites, but I'm not crazy about it because I can barely taste it. And I LOVE sweet potato fries.

Have eaten both yellow and white bass before, and in fact the white bass run off the powerplant out stream will be happening here in the next 2 weeks. They tastes like blugegill mixed with rock bass to me, and are pretty good eating, and since white and yellow bass spawn so hard and so much, it is doing a good thing for the environment of the waterway you're in when you help control their numbers. Also can soak them in a shallow dish of salt and some drops of Louisiana crab and shrimp and fish boil, giving them a quick rinse before breading them.

Have you tried leaving the fillet connected to the tail? Then you flip the fillet over and you have no problem holding it down while you do the other side. With just a little practice, it's the fastest way to do a fillet.
