MIDO watches are made in Le Locle in the manufacture where Tissot and Certina and Hamilton are made, too. However, they are positioned higher quality-wise and usually get the better ETA movements (quality level Top or Chronometer, as opposed to Standard and Elabore, which are generally used for Tissot/Certina/Hamilton or for external sales to non-Swatch watchmakers). Unfortunately, this puts MIDO in a bit of an awkward spot: Higher than the entry-level Swiss watchmakers but not quite on the level of Longines and Rado. The quality is probably actually closer to Longines and Rado but these two watchmakers have found their own niche (Longines as a well known luxury watch maker with a rich history, Rado as a watchmaker famous for its top quality ceramic cases and bezels). MIDO, however, is a bit in branding limbo. They are well-made watches but do not have a distinctive brand identity except being very classical and conservative watches. The Baroncelli is a typical dresswatch, the Ocean Star is a typical diver. But in each category there is a watch from another brand that "pops" more. Silently making quality watches isn't enough to move the brand into the limelight - unfortunately, because MIDO would deserve it.

I dont give a rat's ass about the history of the watch brand. And those who do are snobs. All I care about is the tangible quality and features of the watch. Mido is huge in Mexico, they sponsor even local tv news. Theres a Mido beautique in every mexican mall and are sold in every retail store. On early XX century Elgin railroad pocket watches was Mexico's main brand. By the 50's that place was took by Steelco and Haste ( US ownership, Mexico made watches with swiss movements). Tissot and Mido were strong maybe due to the resemblance to aztec -mexica name "Tizoc" for Tissot, guess Mido's name was familiar on the most popolous spanish speaking country, ( [yo] mido means [I] measure in spanis, time in this case). Mexico had a Westclox alarm clock facility also. After the quartz crisis Bulova and Citizen kept their market share alongside Mido. Commander was very popular among police officers (as Rolex was with police chiefs). Even a XXI century mexican folk singer is named "El Komander", maybe due to that influence. Nowadays Mido's main adversary is (Grupo Salinas) Nivada (not to be confused with Nivada Grenchen revival microbrand sold in swiss francs) that sponsors national tv news (also owned Grupo Salinas), has mexican football league teams products and is sold in every retail (mexican Sears by Grupo Carso, Liverpool, Fábricas de Francia etc).

Glad to hear. I have had my eye on this watch for months. I own an original 1968 mido ocean star in 18k gold. It’s never been serviced and it still runs ok. I don’t wear it a lot but when I do it keeps time very well. It’s the only watch I’ve come across where in the owner’s handbook it says ‘your Mido ocean star is 100% waterproof’ in most other watches it says water resistant!!! The watch is sealed by its plexiglass crystal as there’s no entry into the back of the watch. It was my farthers watch and he paid £80 in 1968 for it. It’s been valued at around £1600 today. A friend of mine has two omega watches and both required service at 4 years old as both broke down!!! MIDI watches are very underrated, the new models are much of a muchness with other brands and are all under the swatch umbrella where they share a lot of internal movements.

I love my Mido dress watch. And I think this one is fantastic! Relatively affordable GMT. Very handsome. It's just too darn big for my 6.5 inch wrist. I do think it's an excellent, practical, well-made watch. I wish they made it in a smaller size.

That is one of the most beautiful watches I've seen in a while! Stunning! My wedding watching is a mido baroncelli 2 subseconds and it's gorgeous. Love this watchmaker

Indeed Mido is popular in Mexico. Also un other Latin American countries. Nowadays it is more like the brand used by “your father or grandfather” probably one of the very first “easy access” Swiss brands available in Mexico.

I’m waiting on an Ocean Star 200 to be delivered , I’m from brisvegas and can’t say I’d heard of them before as an Aussie consumer🤷🏼♂️ .I Stumbled upon the brand looking for a deal on an Oris , which truth be told is a tad out of my price range, so this model and brand is a perfect way to get myself my first Swiss made . I’m super excited !!

Cool! I own 3 Mido's - all from the AFAIK now discontinued All-Dial line..... Love them. My grail watch was a Mido All-Dial Chronograph in titanium, which uses the Valjoux 7750 movement. By the time I had the $$$ to buy it, it was discontinued and I hunted down a pristine used one. Generally, I like bezel-less divers (don't dive, seems useless, takes up face space). Recently bought a cheap used Mido chronometer as a daily. They are very popular in Asia (Philippines, Thailand, HK, Malaysia, etc.). IMHO, all of the Swatch Group brands that use ETA movements are pretty much equivalent, which you choose is largely a matter of taste and the movement/case finishing will be driven by price.

Thanks for making this video. My father has severe dementia now and has been confined to a bed for 3 years. Still feisty though. but in his professional days he was a fan of this brand. He was a stock broker at a major Latin American bank in the 1960s. He was always impeccably dressed and actually had an arrangement with a suit label to wear their suits at the bank. So I assume he wore Mido dress watches as divers and suits is not a Latin American tradition. I'm going to try and source a vintage piece for him and I'm going to trade or sell one of my Squale for this 80 hour GMT.

It's a nice watch, here in Switzerland Mido is very present. Certina use Powermatic 80 also ;)

Alot of the Certina's on Chrono are in France, Mido were better known in the vintage market because of the Ocean Star and a famous multi hand Chrono way back when. Thats a handsome watch and looks way better here than on their website🤣 Ideal watch for a man who dives on annual leave every year

I own my MIDO Ocean Star GMT for almost one Year and I am still loving it. I think here in Europe MIDO is more popular than it is in your country.

what size wrist do you have? I honestly want to pull the trigger on this but I have skinny wrists and feel it would be TOO big. I have a Longines black pvd legend diver at 42mm and I feel that's pushing it. 44mm just seems like a tragic deal breaker for me but I'm praying the 50mm lug to lug will mitigate that issue for me. The Longines has a 52mm lug to lug.
@santorini84233 жыл бұрын
@@flipdog69xxx I’ve got 180mm wrists and it looks great , remember the bezel makes the dial wear smaller, go for it, I also got an after market rubber strap from Gecko with a deployment clasp, prefer the look of this watch to my no date sub
@flipdog69xxx3 жыл бұрын
@@santorini8423 I forgot to mention i have a 6.5in/165mm wrist. But yea, I'm hoping the 50mm lug to lug will make it work. I just love the fact it's a "true" GMT with a proper dive timing bezel AND date complication.

Not sure about that, it’s basically a Sub homage, no real character of its own. The DS PH200M is pretty cool though.

I have had Certina DS diver on my list for a while, love the titanium, but its just too big lug to lug with the bracelet, like 52-55 mm.

Very nice. They do have good presence in Latin America and are well regarded although not considered collector pieces among enthusiasts any more than in other regions. I recently came across a model called Ocean Star Tribute and is something I could see myself wearing. Great video!

Great review, as usual. I was seriously thinking about one of these new Mido divers, fairly priced but just like the Bulova moon watch, gorgeous and stunning looking piece which is way over big at 44mm with 49 mm length lugs. What is behind this craze for 44, 45 and 46 mm diameter watches ? I'm no midget at 5"11 with nearly 7 inch wrists, my son is 6"1 with 71/4 inch wrists but these huge watch diameters are ridiculous.

One of my fav brands. I believe such brands should be. Just cuz if you have any MIDO, you deeper in watches then others.

Love these watches, I sooooo want one. Not in blue, thank you. When you start listing the value points on this watch, it almost gets a little ridiculous. Start with a Swiss-made automatic GMT movement with an 80 hour power reserve, and then just go from there. The use of the 60 minute bezel adds awesome utility, this is a tool watch. A refined-looking tool watch, but a tool for sure. Me love mucho.

Hi Jody, There is definitely nothing wrong with Mido! Mido is a brand with some iconic models like the Commander and the Multifort. And you could get many models with a COSC certificate for around €1,000! Have a look at the Commander 1959 or Shade line with its fantastic retro vibes! I personally restarted my watch journey with an Commander II Automatic Chronometer. A local watch shop that used to be an Omega AD, now offers the more affordable brands of the Swatch Group. And Mido is one of that brands. And he is not the only one here in Germany. Not to speak of many online shops offering a broad variety of Mido watches. Best regards, Claus

Agree, here in Mexico, Mido is a huge name for itself, big retailers have bigger stands for Mido than Hamilton, Tissot and even Longines, even people that doesn’t collect watches at all knows the brand and identifies them in the street, hell, my wedding watch was a 18k yellow gold Mido Commander!
@cookiemonstahmetal3 жыл бұрын
Rado it’s pretty big here too.

I just got the Red Bull Cliff Diving Edition and all I can say for now is that it is gorgeous. You are right Mido is popular in Mexico (where I live) but is considered quite an affordable luxury brand just as Tissot. Hamilton is a little more expensive. By the way I paid a little more than $1000.00 USD for the watch.

Nice review of a seldom appreciated brand. I have the Mido Barencelli Heritage. It's a dress watch from a few years back. I know your not huge on dress watches but this one may be worth your time to take a look at. It's perhaps the best dress watch you can bye under a thousand. Great dimensions, classic and elegant design with a subtle but beautiful dial. Under 11mm thick as well I believe! Thanks Jody!

Kinda cool that the movement has pretty much the same functionality as the Omega 8906 caliber, even though the wobbly GMT hand does not inspire confidence.
