Big shout out to Alan for the loan of his nice and shiny Mido! (And for the Seiko you'll see in a couple of weeks.) A bit big for me personally, but a cracking movement and amazing AR. An appealing long term all-rounder with diving capabilities, and a proper traveler's GMT. Now, all they need (according to me anyway) is a bit more targeted marketing and to reissue some of those stunners from the past. Cheers, Jody

My profession takes me around the world. Once while in Europe, I bought my father a Mido dress watch. Over the last 15 years he buys primarily Mido. For my uncle's birthday, Pop bought him a Mido, and for my birthday, he bought me the Ocean Star.

I'm like that with Certina. My Uncle was career navy. In his time the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) were issued Certina DS-3 divers. I've got the DS PH200M, a DS Podium and am currently saving for the newish DS Chronograph Automatic re-issue. My cousin still has my late uncles RAN issued DS-3 and his wife and an Aunt wear Vintage Certina too. I like it when a family adopts a specific watch brand, especially when it's not a 'household name' sorta brand.

MIDO watches are made in Le Locle in the manufacture where Tissot and Certina and Hamilton are made, too. However, they are positioned higher quality-wise and usually get the better ETA movements (quality level Top or Chronometer, as opposed to Standard and Elabore, which are generally used for Tissot/Certina/Hamilton or for external sales to non-Swatch watchmakers). Unfortunately, this puts MIDO in a bit of an awkward spot: Higher than the entry-level Swiss watchmakers but not quite on the level of Longines and Rado. The quality is probably actually closer to Longines and Rado but these two watchmakers have found their own niche (Longines as a well known luxury watch maker with a rich history, Rado as a watchmaker famous for its top quality ceramic cases and bezels). MIDO, however, is a bit in branding limbo. They are well-made watches but do not have a distinctive brand identity except being very classical and conservative watches. The Baroncelli is a typical dresswatch, the Ocean Star is a typical diver. But in each category there is a watch from another brand that "pops" more. Silently making quality watches isn't enough to move the brand into the limelight - unfortunately, because MIDO would deserve it.

I dont give a rat's ass about the history of the watch brand. And those who do are snobs. All I care about is the tangible quality and features of the watch. My mido ocean star chronograph can hold its own against rolex diver watches. Those willing to pay 10 times more just because it's a Rolex are suckers

swatch intentionally slpit their marketing strategies by continent/country. in central and eastern europe, certina is the definitive entry level swiss watch alongside tissot. in america/canada/aus, hamilton and tissot are the most popular entry level swiss piece. in india, rado is huge. you've mentioned mexico, but in china prc also, mido's brand name is as widely known as tissot and longines. so it's not a surprise people from different regions have different perception of brand popularity. hello from melbs.

That strategy, found pretty much across the globe in almost all fields, also helps guard against becoming a one-trick-pony, which can have disastrous consequences if a firm puts all its eggs in one basket.SImple commerce. I am in Canada and even if they were to try for some traction, there are better-known players for the price. Had they been just a doggone smaller, I might have considered a model or two.

I own a Mido Ocean Star Tribute and it's a great watch. Of the four entry level Swatch Group brands, Mido is at the top. The reason nobody talks about Mido is because they have a limited market presence in most English speaking countries, but you'll find they are well-known elsewhere (e.g. Latin America) and Swatch targets them accordingly to those markets.

Mido is a fantastic brand with great and cheap consumer service. There divers are the best in the catalog but also the dress pieces such as the DatoDay are very nice. Here in Mexico they're all over the place alongside with Nivada and Hamilton. Because Mido is a brand with heritage in the country. In fact the word "Mido" means "I meassure" (refering to meassuring time) in spanish, and it was given that name to the company because the original owner's brother was learning spanish in Mexico and he just fall in love with the culture and the lenguage.

I liked it so much I tracked down a commander datoday COSC certified (I live in Canada 🇨🇦 and generally we get only the same pieces the us gets.) if you can imagine I paid 500$ CAD for a chronometer with documents and registration. And it’s beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. And when people ask me about it they’ve never heard of it. It’s like a Zodiac, but more so. They have an incredible back catalogue and they’re virtually unheard of outside of Europe (apparently the Mexican people are on the ball) great review as usual.

Mido is huge in Mexico, they sponsor even local tv news. Theres a Mido beautique in every mexican mall and are sold in every retail store. On early XX century Elgin railroad pocket watches was Mexico's main brand. By the 50's that place was took by Steelco and Haste ( US ownership, Mexico made watches with swiss movements). Tissot and Mido were strong maybe due to the resemblance to aztec -mexica name "Tizoc" for Tissot, guess Mido's name was familiar on the most popolous spanish speaking country, ( [yo] mido means [I] measure in spanis, time in this case). Mexico had a Westclox alarm clock facility also. After the quartz crisis Bulova and Citizen kept their market share alongside Mido. Commander was very popular among police officers (as Rolex was with police chiefs). Even a XXI century mexican folk singer is named "El Komander", maybe due to that influence. Nowadays Mido's main adversary is (Grupo Salinas) Nivada (not to be confused with Nivada Grenchen revival microbrand sold in swiss francs) that sponsors national tv news (also owned Grupo Salinas), has mexican football league teams products and is sold in every retail (mexican Sears by Grupo Carso, Liverpool, Fábricas de Francia etc).

Glad to hear. I have had my eye on this watch for months. Given its traveler/jumping hour hand GMT function, and the WR depth and dive bezel to boot, I think that with a bracelet swap this could be a one and done watch for travel, including nice nights out. The price is great, and appeals to me to take a less precious GMT traveling. I would want to try one on if possible to see if the size works, but I think it would given that my Samurais are just about 1 mm shorter lug to lug, though I can understand that folks with smaller wrists would think it's too big.

Fantastic review Jody. What an awesome alternative to the Tudor BB GMT. Possibly a bit too chunky for my tastes but very well specified and made. Also, at least one online jeweller here in DE offers this blue GMT with both strap and bracelet at RRP so in effect you get the bracelet for free b

I’m waiting on an Ocean Star 200 to be delivered , I’m from brisvegas and can’t say I’d heard of them before as an Aussie consumer🤷🏼‍♂️ .I Stumbled upon the brand looking for a deal on an Oris , which truth be told is a tad out of my price range, so this model and brand is a perfect way to get myself my first Swiss made . I’m super excited !!

I own a Mido Ocean Star in black and a Mido Baroncelli Heritage in rose gold. That crown on the Ocean Star with the large crown guards can appear to be screwed down when it is not. It is quite flat and heavy on the bracelet so it does not get the same wrist time as other pieces. But I love it and mine has screw links but no ceramic bezel. I got the Baroncelli to fill the void of my grail wish, JLC Master Ultrathin in rose gold. Then I promptly chucked the Mido leather strap and put on a full grain leather strap. It is a fun, super thin piece. The off white dial does not match the white date wheel by a bit.

Nice review of a seldom appreciated brand. I have the Mido Barencelli Heritage. It's a dress watch from a few years back. I know your not huge on dress watches but this one may be worth your time to take a look at. It's perhaps the best dress watch you can bye under a thousand. Great dimensions, classic and elegant design with a subtle but beautiful dial. Under 11mm thick as well I believe! Thanks Jody!

I bought this watch a few weeks ago and just love it. I have a 7.25 inch wrist and I find 42 to 44 millimeters is my sweet spot. I was lucky to find a bracelet in Florida (the only one I could find in the US) but at $168 thought it was expensive for a bracelet with push pins. Yet, I was luck to get this watch for 35% off MSRP so that helped with the cost of the bracelet. I have other GMT watches but this is the only "true" GMT watch that I own. I think it is the best value in a Swiss made true GMT watch.

I’ve loved their Ocean Star aesthetic for years, particularly the blue variant and grey/orange variant. Woulda bought one years ago if they offered a complementing line at 38-39mm diameter. Kinda figured by now they woulda expended back into the modest sizes as well as these larger ones.

@@Handler9 I have been quite happy with the Maen Hudson with Ronda automatic movement. They had an earlier batch with STP movements, and the STP was awful - repeated quality issues. They transitioned to Ronda, and replaced my STP with Ronda, and it has been fine.

Thanks for making this video. My father has severe dementia now and has been confined to a bed for 3 years. Still feisty though. but in his professional days he was a fan of this brand. He was a stock broker at a major Latin American bank in the 1960s. He was always impeccably dressed and actually had an arrangement with a suit label to wear their suits at the bank. So I assume he wore Mido dress watches as divers and suits is not a Latin American tradition. I'm going to try and source a vintage piece for him and I'm going to trade or sell one of my Squale for this 80 hour GMT.

I love my Mido dress watch. And I think this one is fantastic! Relatively affordable GMT. Very handsome. It's just too darn big for my 6.5 inch wrist. I do think it's an excellent, practical, well-made watch. I wish they made it in a smaller size.

My wife just bought me that very exact same Ocean Star GMT for my birthday. And I agree that is one of the most handsome watches in the market. So glad you review it. Thanks, Jody.. NB: I also admit the main flaw of this watch is the size of the lume area on the hour & minute hands which are smaller than the lume on the markings/indices. The lume on the hour & minute hands should have been wider & longer, and much pronounced in the dark compare to those lumes of the markings.

When I was visiting Thailand and Cambodia, many of the lesser prevalent Swatch Group brands like Mido and Certina were super popular. Every mall and big department store had them in the cases. Where I live in California, I've never seen any swatch brand except Tissot, Hamilton, Rado, and Longines, and even then very rarely are they ever advertised the way they are outside the U.S. I'd see 1 or 2 of their flagship models like the Captain Cook or Seastar. I've never seen a Mido at any big box department store yet.

Love these watches, I sooooo want one. Not in blue, thank you. When you start listing the value points on this watch, it almost gets a little ridiculous. Start with a Swiss-made automatic GMT movement with an 80 hour power reserve, and then just go from there. The use of the 60 minute bezel adds awesome utility, this is a tool watch. A refined-looking tool watch, but a tool for sure. Me love mucho.

I just got the Red Bull Cliff Diving Edition and all I can say for now is that it is gorgeous. You are right Mido is popular in Mexico (where I live) but is considered quite an affordable luxury brand just as Tissot. Hamilton is a little more expensive. By the way I paid a little more than $1000.00 USD for the watch.

Very nice watch. A lot of useful features for the price. The only downsides being the pin/sleeves bracelet links and the weak lume. Something a dive watch shouldn’t suffer from. The rainbow diver is the one I’d go for mind. But that was a limited edition I believe. Still, a very distinctive watch, that’s unique to Mido.

Here in Italy Mido is almost an unknown brand; you can find it in few shops but it is pretty rare to see one on people's wrist. A couple of years ago I was in Lugano (CH) and visiting the city centre I went in a Mido shop, where I started to talk with the seller. He told me that the minimalist style of the brand was particularly appreciated in Japan, so maybe there Mido has good sales numbers.

what size wrist do you have? I honestly want to pull the trigger on this but I have skinny wrists and feel it would be TOO big. I have a Longines black pvd legend diver at 42mm and I feel that's pushing it. 44mm just seems like a tragic deal breaker for me but I'm praying the 50mm lug to lug will mitigate that issue for me. The Longines has a 52mm lug to lug.

Hi Jody, There is definitely nothing wrong with Mido! Mido is a brand with some iconic models like the Commander and the Multifort. And you could get many models with a COSC certificate for around €1,000! Have a look at the Commander 1959 or Shade line with its fantastic retro vibes! I personally restarted my watch journey with an Commander II Automatic Chronometer. A local watch shop that used to be an Omega AD, now offers the more affordable brands of the Swatch Group. And Mido is one of that brands. And he is not the only one here in Germany. Not to speak of many online shops offering a broad variety of Mido watches. Best regards, Claus
