Unboxing, First Impression, and Review of the Mido Ocean Star GMT
is it the best Swiss Travel GMT Diver under $1000?
Mido is a Swiss brand under the Swatch Group Umbrella and is the sibling of brands like Tissot, Hamilton, and Certina
How does it compare to the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged GMT?
How good of a tool watch is this Diving Watch
If you're considering either of these two
You should watch this before you buy!
Is this just one more watch you should add to your watch collection?

I am looking at a true GMT and was searching reviews on the Mido, when found this video. I really like your down to earth review which gives good, genuine, honest vibes. Its all subjective but your unfiltered feelings gives food for thought and for that, thank you. I really like the first reaction and then 1 week opinion, again so down to earth helpful and great common sense approach to a review. Super helpful, Well done.

For me the Mido is the better watch compared to the Seiko. I prefer the Mido’s timing bezel to the GMT master-2 and similar 24 hour bezels, for me a timing bezel is much more versatile in every day life and combined with the screw down crown and the 200m water resistance makes this a true diving watch as well. The quick adjust metal bracelet in the Mido is simply amazing, much better than the rolex oyster bracelet quick adjustment IMO, and one of the best quick adjustment systems out there. The movement is amazingly accurate, it’s regulated in factory by robots using a laser to cut the length of the spring, and in my experience, offers close to COSC performance in all its versions. The powermatic 80s is one of the few movements at these prices ranges I never feel a need to regulate myself or have someone else do it for me (although it’s not as easy to manually regulate a powermatic 80 it can be done). Mido uses the 800.611 version with Nivachron (no plastic parts) and although this version is not as resistant to magnetism as the silicium oscillator that comes with the COSC certified version 80.811, it offers good magnetic resistance nonetheless. My MIDO has remained well within COSC parameters (as are my other 3 watches with powermatic 80s) after I demagnetized it after arrival. I have the blue version, and the color scheme both with the blue strap and the metal bracelet from Mido work for business casual environments as well as sporty. This watch for me is a good one-watch-collection candidate.

Thanks for your comment! I feel that the timing bazel is more useful than a rotating 24-hour bazel as well However, I'm not sure having the 24-hour marking on the chapter ring helps the GMT hand with readability That's my only gripe with the mido... It's not very good at being a GMT because it wants to be a diver, and the GMT feature is a bit of an afterthought Except it's not ISO certified, so while it has decent water resistance, it's not the best diver you can get for the sticker price So after owning both the seiko and the mido In my mind, the Seiko is a better gmt, and the Mido is a better sports watch, but it falls short of being a proper diver like a seiko king samurai or king turtle In the end, everything in life involves compromise We have to choose the one that seems like the least compromising to us My favorite diver is my white dial king samurai on a strapco bracelet with a ratcheting clasp. Very similar to the Mido but with better quality and build, my seiko sharp-edge is my favorite gmt and is the most elegant watch in my collection, and the Mido (currently on my wrist) is the go-to when I want both, and I’m willing to compromise a little on elegance, diver prowess, and gmt readability to get that all in one feel Thanks again for the great comment! Enjoy your Mido, and wear it on good health!

I narrowed my search for a true GMT down to this Mido and the Presage. I decided on the Seiko. It's such a beautiful piece in every way. Love it! I might circle back for the Mido as the price continues to fall. I'm seeing the Mido for as low as $850 now. Beautiful watch as well. The two watches truly live in two different worlds. As you said the Presage is more dressy. The Mido you wouldn't hesitate to hit the beach or dive with.

Great choice! I got the Seiko first, and I don't regret it The Mido is great, but I force myself to wear it. Every time I reach for it, I see the Seiko and second-guess myself I love them both, but if I could only have one, I would choose the Seiko 😆 With that said, if the mido falls below 800, it would be foolish not to pick one up It's such a great value, lol

I think the Seiko Presage is the most beautiful of the two, but the Mido is more rugged :) The one downside of the Mido is the GMT hand is tough to read under most llighting conditions due to the 24-hour markers being on the chapter ring :(

I’m kinda a 4hz snob as well, so I tell myself it’s a 4hz movement which they slowed down to 3hz to assist with the 80hr power reserve. I love my Ocean Star GMT. I love that they kept it as diving bezel as the rehaut has the 24hr scale, best of both worlds imho. Just can’t track a third time zone but I’m not a jet setter so that’s not a problem for me 😂. Great review.

Thanks for the comment! I'm a big fan of the timing bazel However, I do find that the 24-hour markers on the chapter ring make the GMT hand hard to read under certain lighting conditions But I think that's an ok trade-off for this watch Miyota has a 4hz GMT starting to show up in exclusive micro brands. Don't be surprised if La Joux Perret borrows the design to make a 4hz travel GMT with an 80-hour reaevere :) It should be interesting to see what happens in the next few years Hopefully, we have an explosion of affordable true gmts in the market
@GeeMood

@@LosNTime Good point! It does seem a bit hard to read the 24scale in the chapter ring in certain conditions. I thought it was just my bad eyes lol. That Miyota movement had added some excitement to the micro brand world. Boldr & Jack Mason already have true gmts on pre-order using this movement. The Jack Mason will be good for those with smaller wrists or those who like smaller watches. At $999 though, I think I got a better watch paying a little more for the Mido.

I have the anniversary white dial Seiko. I removed the bracelet and use a navy blue elastic paratrooper band which is my default now on all sports watches. It's now so comfortable. I'm losing about 8 seconds day. My father wore Mido dress watches when he was a stock broker in the 1960s. They were very big in those days as dive watches and suits were not really accepted.

@@LosNTime i was concerned with the lack of ceramic on the bezel but looking at all the used ones on Ebay over the last year it seems that Seiko Diashield isnt just some marketing nonsense. I was also concerned about the anti reflective coating on the outside of the Mido GMT but owners say its not been an issue. The resale on the Seiko GMT has been pretty soild I was expecting most would be sellon 50% off the original MSRP by now but after the intial 30% discount new and used listings are fairly close. Well maybe that will change with crypto collapse taking down the mass produced expensive watches a few big notches. This Seiko has made me seriously consider a Grand Seiko if the prices do take a hit. That new GS GMT peacock indigo blue is a banger the green bamboo one too.
@LosNTime

Yeah, I think the Seiko has held its value better than the Mido, at least in the gray market And the steel Bezel is pretty tough Mine does have some micro scratches around the 24-hour marking, but I can only see them with a Lupe under certain lighting conditions My opinion is that ten years from now, the seíko will still have a following. It will be a watch that’s more revered the more time passes by The Mido is fantastic, but it will come and go with much less fan fair As I mentioned in happy to have both tho :) Cheers 🍻

Almost everything about this watch is perfect. Fantastic build quality, well-priced and good looking. The one thing that is devastatingly wrong though is the hands. The GMT hand is far too large for its function as a secondary complication. It should be much more discrete. The skeletonizing of the minute hand reduces its legibility even in broad daylight. Viewing the time in the dark is almost impossible. The huge lume section on the GMT hands obscures the applied markers, and the lume potion of the minute hand gets completely lost in front of the markers, and is outshone by the GMT lume. I bought this watch because I like Mido, they are good watches, and I needed a diver/GMT for my diving trips abroad, but I’ve found that I don’t like it much because of it’s legibility.
@LosNTime
@LosNTime 6 ай бұрын
I found the hands to be phenomenal My only real complaint is that the 24-hour markers on the chapter ring are too small and are hard to read That’s the only issue I found with legibility Did you check out the Ocean Star 600? It’s not a GMT, but it’s a fantastic diver And the lume is face-melting :) Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I appreciate it 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

IMHO the Powermatic is not a “meh” movement. I have two Certinas and one Mido and are my champions in precision. For example I have an A Lange & Soenhe Datograph with an incredible finishing on the caliber and overall but still keeps a deviation of +30 seconds a day which I find non acceptable for that kind of price. The Powermatic 80 compete in precisión easely with Rolex or Omega
@LosNTime

Hey, thanks for the comment! My issue with the Powermatic is that, in my opinion, it is a downgraded 2824. It's simply harder to work on for the sake of cutting the cost of production 2824 are awesome I really love them I'm currently reviewing a chronometer-grade powermatic, which so far has been the most accurate movement I put my hand on Who knows, maybe it will change my mind With that said, I would steer away from the lower-grade Powermatic (c07.1xx) with the plastic escapement, but this is just my opinion. NO PLASTIC ESCAPEMENT/PARTS Tissot uses a titanium and nickel alloy termed 'NIVACHRON'. Tissot has managed to create an effective machine that not only is magnetic resistant but that also boasts 80 hours of power reserve, much more than the usual 42hrs of movements of those early days. The way I see it, the Powematic 80 is actually an evolution of the mechanical movent, so I wouldn't call any Powermatic 80 'lower' grade. My Certina DS-1 has been running within COSC parameters for over 10 years without servicing. And yes, the movement can be regulated if it needs be and is not disposable, another running misconception.
@LosNTime
@LosNTime 10 ай бұрын
sorry that's not correct, there is more than one type of power matic There are 3 basic grades. Powermatic 80.601 (ETA C07.111) Powermatic 80.661 (ETA C07.651) Powermatic 80.811 (ETA C07.811) C07.111 is the lowest grade and it has a plastic palate fork which is why it's noted to have 2 fewer jewels (23 vs 25) the C07.651has normal palate fork and 25 jewels being the mid-grade movement The C07.811 is the highest grade movement with a normal palate fork 25 jewels and a Silicium hairspring for better anti-magnetism So look closely at your watch, as it will be different depending on the brand and watch you get. for example, based on the Tissot website, the PRX has a C07.111 (23 jewels), but the gentleman has a C07.811 (25 jewels) look at the movement section on the Tissot website and you will see these tow matches don't have the same jewel count.

I have this Presage and while it’s definitely “nice” ….it’s just wears a bit too big for my smaller wrist. As such it kind of does a poor job in being a sporty travel watch. Another Nitpick: those sub dials are not very useful , and worse, break up the star of the show: that dial texture ! In retrospect, I should have probably just picked up the three-dial, slightly smaller version of this watch, (despite smaller case , probably still gives you more clean “dial area” to enjoy)…. And shopped for a GMT elsewhere.

@@ColinLack Of all time? Man, that's tricky... Ghostbusters for the Sega Genesis and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out for the NEs are games I still play today... I love arcade basketball so so the OG “Run N Gun” gets a lot of play on Mame I also have many good memories of Sega CD titles like “Raise of the Dragon.” Early RPG would be fantasy start on Geneais and final fantasy seven on PS1 Favorite contemporary games I like uncharted/the Last of us series a lot and played tons of cyberpunk. Lol, oh, an spider man miles morales 😆 Two games I'm trying to play now are Dead Space Remake and HiFi Rush 😆 I have had much time to make videos or play games, tho, lol

Steinhart can give you a true SWISS GMT under $1k as well. Steinhart Ocean One GMT 28800 4Hz 39 or 42mm
@LosNTime

ETA is the only Swiss Manufactured making a true GMT movement under 1k, and it's limited to power matic movements, which are exclusive to swatch brands The Ocean One Gmt is a “caller GMT” not a “true/travel GMT.” Caller Gmt and travel/true gmt are functionally different complications Thanks for your comment

I would buy a Mido if they offer me a No Date version. I hate so much Date on a watch, looks asymmetric and it’s useless with a phone in your pocket nowadays. I buy watches as a luxury thing, visual, not for functionality.

@@TyphonLeTitan I am sorry I am coming across as a snob. I think that anyone that wants a caller GMT should have one I recently reviewed the Christopher Ward Sealander GMT, which is a caller GMT, and I think it's pretty nice The reason I prefer the travel GMT at this particular price range is simply that it is a more niche movement vs. the caller GMT, which is just a tiny modification to a day date movement ( day date happens to be a pretty inexpensive complication) Check out the following two videos if you have the time. Hopefully, you will see I am not trying to be a snob or poop on anyone's preference 🍺 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYu8mYV7pbagd5o kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6bGioB3p5eVmcU

Mido is probably one of my least favorite brands. Something there is very unattractive, can't put a finger on it.
@LosNTime
@LosNTime Жыл бұрын
Mido tends to be a bit bland in general But I think that this GMT is the best-looking watch in their catalog Overall swiss watches take a lot fewer chances, and while they are not ugly, they can often feel a bit bland and uninspiring If you break down watches into three categories, affordable, high complication, and stunning esthetics, the reality is that watched can only live in two out of three of those categories The Mido is affordable and has a high complication (travel GMT), so it should be allowed to be a little rough around the edges :)
