He doesn't even own any equipment. This is the first time he ever recorded on anything other than a cell phone. He is working with Radio WV and they provided the equipment to record this song. It seems that they are acting in a managerial role in getting his music out there. When he recorded this he was still working in a paper mill. He lives with his dogs in a camper on this property.

To speak to the end of the video. The system has taught you to punch down. And you willingfully went there, then disclaimered you believe people need help. You will always have both. Same goes for making rich men, in hopes of trickle down theory. Fact is, with non bs pay, people don’t need assistance. Or if salaries could cover a household with one income like they did until the early 80’s. Then you have some politicians who want to “up the benefits” by requiring working to catch welfare…. That is like an instant wage subsidy for the likes of corporations! We all pay what Walmart won’t. Now lastly. Ask yourself why this song resonates. It is a protest song that went viral. Protest songs get zero radio play these days where clear channel aka IHeart who brought you Limbaugh, Oreily, and Hannity, daily to push corporate interests, will never manage to share that there is a segment of people scheduled to suffer under current system. It is baked in. God forbid they lose a commercial purchaser because time and a half overtime pay needs to go away, so too does minimum wage, and we all need to pretend it doesn’t hurt people but actually helps. Lastly, the government are pawns in the system and can force through what is right and good. They are bought off by the system that allows it. And our Supreme court is unified in that. As they were selected for for that one reason.

70% of unpaid taxes are from the top 1%. Even more absurd is whining about welfare when it's literally a drop in the bucket of fraud.. the corporate welfare is what the problem is. There you get people gambling with others money and when they inevitably drive it into the ground then have the government bail them out, no consequences, and they just move to another corporation. But if you or I did that we'd be declaring bankruptcy and most certainly be investigated (and most definitely never bailed out). In fact, welfare is distributed to the states as a block grant. In Mississippi, Brett Favre was petitioning for the college to get a new volleyball gym (his daughter is on the team) so they took $4 million dollars from the welfare grant to pay for it. Then gave him an additional $1 million for "facilitating" and in emails had told his assistant that he needed to conceal the origin of the money "Because it would look bad". So the money meant for struggling families ($200 a month in food stamps and $200 biweekly for the poorest of the poor) instead was wasted.

@@jimweir6500 exactly. WIC, child tax credits, all that stuff are from other people paying for it, mostly really wealthy people, because lower income people don't usually need to pay those large sums of income tax, property tax, inheritance tax, and when the taxes aren't enough to cover the bill, they print some more, which makes the dollar worth even less, thereby hurting the same group of people that think they're getting free money from rich people. They aren't, they're making said rich people protect large sums in things like real estate and other things that don't devalue, and downsize their work force. and then you couple that with Blackrock swooping in on people that are about to close on a house with a huge cash offer, and then burdensome zoning restrictions. it's not hard to see why we have shortages. For other great songs in that genre, see almost everything done by Bob Dylan did back in the 60's, Barry McGuires's very famous "Eve of Destruction" from 1965, and closer to home, Bruce Hornsby & The Range - "The Way It Is", the most beautiful protest song ever written, from 1986. I've been around for quite some time and protest songs have always been there, even during the 90's or 00's, while there was less going on politically than in any other period for the western world to protest about. Looking back at music from before I was born, we have protest songs going all the way back to the 50's and 60's, though it starts to get rarer from there, as music wasn't as ubiquitously available or recorded as it is now. Still, I'm pretty sure it was always there, at least played live.

We are, I believe, being rather effectively "conditioned" to repress our reaction to so many things we have been witnessing lately, that hearing someone mirror our repressed thoughts and feelings causes a flood of self-awareness that we appreciate very much, despite the discomfort that is involved. I've been following this young man since his song broke several weeks ago. He has a channel where he was posting videos of his dogs playing in the woods or in a creek on his property and started posting a dozen or so songs he recorded on his phone a few months ago. Draven from RadioWV either saw him perform at one of the farmers' markets he frequents or someone directed him to the Oliver Anthony Music channel. RadioWV sent a crew with a professional video camera and microphone to his trailer to record several of his songs, two of which they posted on the RadioWV KZbin channel, which generally features little known performers of traditional music from Appalachia. All three songs have since charted on iTunes. "Rich Men North of Richmond' debuted at #1 on the Billboad Hot 100, the first time that has happened with an artist that had never charted before. It has also spent several weeks at #1 on iTunes, three other have shown up in the top ten and all ten songs on his channel have appeared in the top twenty-five. Chris Lunsford (or Lumsford) is his real name, Oliver Anthony is his grandfather who was a subsistance farmer in Appalachia and grew up in a cabin with dirt floors and no running water. He named his channel in honor of his grandfather because he wants to do that traditional type of music. He has turned down offers of up to eight million to sign with a recording label.

This is an amazing reaction. I like that you can comment on it musically too. The genre of this song is a modern take on Appalachian mountain music. In the old Appalachian dialect many people put an "h" in front of vowels. For instance h'aint. So Oliver is paying tribute to his ancestors from Appalachia as well as the genre. He doesn't speak this way. I think it's genius. But then I like to study dialects. This song is not on his website but on the radioWV website because they scouted him and got his permission to record him for their website. He hoped it would get 300,000 views. Your review was so interesting and spot on that I'm going to subscribe. Thank you. ❤

I said the same thing before I read your comment! Much thanks for the acknowledgement of the roots he's paid tribute to; there are many other recordings from our region I would love for Tara to respond to. Best to you and yours.

You just garnered so much of my respect for speaking truths about abuse of power in the system. Taxes are gonna tear us apart and there needs to be a sensible approach to spending and government policy. Particularly current administration, thank you

Love this guy because we can relate to him so much. Btw the breath sound with the w’s and other words is a southern Appalachian thing. I’ve grew up around it my whole life. It’s one of the oldest accents in the us.

Great analysis of a song I've seen in a long time (and there are hundreds out there on KZbin). I stumbled upon on your video from FB reels last night - you're so elegant, eloquent and fantastic! Your comment, as said earlier is spot on and keep up with the great work you do.

Thank you for reacting to Chris Anthony AKA "Oliver." I appreciate your musical breakdown as well as you really reacting to the song. It's not the most perfect work of music, but it speaks to people because of the message and you seem to get that. Just wait until you hear the remix of this by Dax! On another note, I would love to hear you break down more Led Zeppelin or maybe Aerosmith or Peter Gabriel. Thank you again!

What I love about his sound is that it's literally true Country- what I mean is that when he sings words like "world"- he sings them with the same "Hill" Country accent people of his area speak with. It's not "world", it's "H-world". I'm no linguistics expert, but I do know a thing or two about it because I'm just interested by it and I believe adding the "h" is a hold over from the original Appalachian settler's accents from Scotland and Ireland. ALSO- thank you so much for promoting the important message of this song! Veterans homeless on the street, but bums and illegal aliens getting massive hand outs and tax dollars and elected officials doing what they can to secure power and screwing law-abiding citizens over.

I wanted a reaction to this song, but it's a "spicy" song in our current environment. Thank you for picking this song, giving us an interesting and new type of music to get an insight on. Great job for reacting to this and a great analysis of it, too!

What I like about him is he said that it's against the world as it is and that he's not conservative in any political way in fact he's a centrist just a man with a guitar spitting facts with an AMAZING VOICE!!

It’s a great song. I don’t agree with blaming poor people for the problems of capitalism. There is another place north of Richmond called Wall Street. Pinning the blame on obese poor people ‘milking welfare’, buying sweets, is silly when the real problem is rich men on Wall Street snorting cocaine.

Dang you need to listen again if that's what you got from this. He totally did the opposite of what your saying. Except people milking welfare, which is rampant. But even though he is calling that out he then follow that up with,it is brought on by the political bullcrap of the rich men North of Richmond.

I have to only give you a 99.9% mark for this review/reaction....That niggling lil .1% is due to "North Richmond" versus "North OF Richmond"...As a "Richmonder", I want to stress he's inferring The City of Washington, D.C., about 90 minute drive north from Richmond, Va.

Scots-Irish settled in rural areas and brought their tradition of song and music with them. Far from the centers of power, their songs often reflect self-reliance, sorrow, and resentment. Think of this song as discontent in the background. Or maybe, annoyance at the things people with few apparent values apparently value.

The way he sings is called an "Appalachian Holler". He's not from Appalachia, but from nearby, in the Piedmont area; so, his way of singing comes natural to us. (I come from Appalachia, but from a different state, than him.)

Rich Men North of Richmond, and Try That In A Small Town are protest songs which resonate with people as they point out that which is frequently not discussed, covered in media etc. While I like these songs to me the most relevant still today, protest song that resonates still today almost 60 yr later is Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire. Included in this period would be Bob Dylan "Masters of War" and Larry Norman " Great American Novel" or "Nightmare #71"
