Tack så mycket!! ☺️ Could I also ask about the "-tion" sound please?? As in "station" , "nation" , "lektion"... Our teacher told us that "nation" should be pronounced like na-"hon (sv)". But in a song, I heard the singer says "nat-hon" instead... So it's like there is a "t" in between (the song is called "nationalist" , by mimikry. Popped out on my Spotify when I was listening to Swedish music). So what is the correct way of pronouncing the -(k)tion sound? Thanks!
@swedishlinguist3083
@swedishlinguist3083 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! So the general rule is is that the -tion ending is pronounced "sjon". So "station" is pronounced "sta-sjon", and "lektion" is pronounced "lek-sjon". Then there are exceptions, like "nation", where you for some reason pronounce the T separately, so the correct pronunciation is "nat-sjon"! But this is an exception! I'm sure there are other ones though.

About 'rs' : As another commenter pointed out, bending the tongue in that case seems to get in the way (or maybe I do it correctly but do not realise it, expecting to feel more of a difference in my mouth) which ends up being closer to a 'tj' or an english 'sh' (as in 'ship'). Anyway though, I would like to ask something else for the sake of completeness: What about r + other 'special' consonantal combinations (digraphs? not sure if that's the term) such as r+sj , r+tj , r+ng and r+gn ? Not sure if these would be present in valid swedish words as I can not come up with an example out of the top of my head, though. R forcing the next however many consonants after it to become retroflexed makes sense, but on the other hand I can't think of a way to make a retroflexed 'sj' or 'ng' or 'gn' sound, hence the question.

@swedishlinguist3083
@swedishlinguist3083 4 жыл бұрын
Hej!

What is again the explanation for using the sound of "sh" in words like Ernst and Fortsätta? Letters r+n in the first word and r+t in the second, obviously kill the r sound, and you have to roll your tongue up. But why then follows "sh" and not "s"?
@swedishlinguist3083
@swedishlinguist3083 3 жыл бұрын
The R just makes all of the letters S T D N L retroflex, and it doesn't matter if it's just one, or three in a row! That's why "vart ska du" is pronunced "vaʈ ʂka du" and not "vaʈ ska du", and "bärnsten" is pronounced "bäɳʂʈen" and not "bäɳsten". It's simply easier to just let the tongue stay in one place instead of moving it around :D

the awkward moment when you realise you can't make an sh sound with your tongue curled up ... why is this? It must be possible as you do it, but my tongue seems to get in the way of the sound - I can make the sound you are making but with my tongue flat...
@swedishlinguist3083
@swedishlinguist3083 3 жыл бұрын
It's actually the same tongue shape as when you do an English R. But instead of just voicing it, you breathe out air the same way as when you do a 'sh' sound. If you say "sure" with an American accent, the actual sound is "shr". If you say this - shrshrshr - you can feel the tongue moving. Try to make it stay in the R position, but keep doing the airflow as you do in "sh". Let me know if this helps or just made you more confused :D

@The Swedish Linguist thanks, apparently I don't do english rs right - even though I am english ;) I do them very similar to a v - a v you touch the top of your bottom lip with your top teeth, an r you put your top teeth behind your bottom lip - my tongue doesn't really do anything...and now I am just repeating sure a lot....

@@swedishlinguist3083 I thought I was doing a standard English R ...(at least I have never heard a difference between how I say it and how anyone else does, or been corrected) I can say sure with an American accent, maybe a slightly butchered one - (I'm British) but I reckon it does the job, if I do it too much it sounds Irish.... I still don't use my tongue though.
