The issue is they kinda boxed themselves into a corner by making almost all the units and lightcones in Preservation into Shield based, when it's easier to design around damage mitigation like Fu Xuan. That and sustain powercreep makes the game way harder to balance around. As a result, they've basically been making abundance units who do a bunch of damage instead because that's far more simple to build around. Also, they really should've gone with the original idea for Aventurine tbh. Aventurine used to be a dodge based character instead of a shielder, but as a result of the way they implemented it, it caused Aventurine to just be the last one alive. If they made it so you say, dodge every other hit on units affected by the skill x3 or something, it would've been easier for them to later build a different shield 5*. The issue is that if they release the dodge 5* now, they'll just be viewed as trash Aventurine/Lingsha.

Yeah. They just need to make the shield or damage reduction more potent. Buff gepard so his shield could stack or maybe if he uses ultimate for the 2nd time it'll become a heal instead of shield. Give PMC more shield and stackable. Or just make a simple copy paste of aventurin in another character but not imaginary, maybe wind or quantum shield. The devs r literally lacking indeed.

Maybe they could try adding “Quake” meta? Like reflect damage… or add something like petrify, shatter,crystallized. Like the ice element with freeze and dissociate. You know those trotters where they have a shield.. you have to hit them 30 times to get the shield down… They could also implement that feature… but it might make the character too broken. It could work if they balance it out Single target damage immunity? Imagine fu xuan but her skill is single target. When the skill is used on an ally ,that character will be immune to all damage +some damage buff. Whilst the adjacent ally would have a damage reduction buff. Ehhh many flaws but u wonder how the future preservation units would be like In general,they could implement the buffs from the SU to the characters. Like we could get a disassociate dps, the elation buff “aftertaste” could a support like rmc. Ngl I feel like they’ve already thought about it

they kind of shot themselves in the foot by releasing fu xuan and aventurine. nowadays, they can't release a new 5 star preservation if they don't provide a 5k shield, 80% crit rate and 160% crit damage for existing, 90% damage reduction, or follow up attacks with 200% def and 500% hp scaling after getting hit

Adding to the discussion, would be nice if we had a Lightcone/set to buff the Preservation MC so we can have another option, his KIT is interesting but too weak, if he could have a better Shield/Speed to compete with Aventurine would be very cool, his Agroo Skill is fun.

Because they are hard to design and it’s hard to create another preservation without looking like a copy and paste (press skill give shield, ult give more shield). There is a concept for shields reflecting dmg or shields inflicting debuffs but they can only do so much with the ways that character implement their shield without making it seem basic and generic

i think they just lack creativity. They already implemented the solution from the DU, the preservation buff that can negate the whole turn shield or even the quake mechanics. I think they are just lazy in implementing solutions. Or even the trotter that reflects the damage dealt. Or even its not just a straight up shield or just ignoring 90% of damage dealt to everyone while using skill or ultimate.

One personal wish that I've had for some time is that they make preservation units kits more like aventurine's, where his whole kit benefits/scales with defense. It's awkard how PMC, Gepard and March 7th want defense for their shields, but everything else on their kit is asking you to build ATK, EHR, ER or something else.

March isn't limited to sheilding only one ally, her sheilds expire when the target has taken a certain number of turns (or taken too much damage). She technically can protect the whole team, however she needs to constantly be using her skill and she doesn't work well with super fast teammates (or having to protect more teammates like memosprites). When I got started, I used her instead of other early sustains like Natasha or Lynx because her ult gets more done (e.g. can freeze bosses mid turn). If the job of Hoyo is to present challenges for the players to overcome; abundance lets player units get much closer to death than preservation typically does. Abundance has to react to incoming damage wheras preservation relies on preemptively ensuring the shield wall is properly maintained (and for no one to take too many bonus turns as that makes their shield expire early). Even if both units basically do the same job it feels a lot more tense to nearly reach zero and then patch it all up than it is to take a chip of damage through your sheilds and then just erecting the bastion once more.

There is no reason to have more than 2 limited sustains per account. My solution? A new endgame gamemode that is about SURVIVING a certain number of cycles against really strong attacks, so people would be incentivized to pull for more sustain units or even having more than one in a team. Some people would probably find it boring initially but i personally like it as an idea and hope something similiar releases in the future.

the only way to incentivize pulling new sustains that I can think of is to either A. give them further utility outside of sustain, like huo huo, or B. damage creep the game and make it harder to survive without newer sustain units. A mode just about surviving would not be fun to the majority. I’d much prefer option A over B though.

(also how would you avoid it being an unplayable damage creep mode?) if the problem for modes like MoC is powercreep (because damage and improving said damage are the most meaningful goals) how would you prevent a damage creep where they make newer sustains seem appealing by upping incoming damage while making sure newer sustains compete.

I feel like preservation just has a hard time being balanced in hsr to be designed. abundance characters just need to heal. They don't need to be balanced because there's already a hard limit on how much they can heal (based on ally max hp). preservation on the other hand will end up either blocking all damage on top of having normal sustain utility or having paper thin shields and being underpowered like P trailblazer

This has been an known issue of course. One way that I've proposed is to expand the roster to 5 characters per party and make enemies do more damage so that both Preservation and Abundance are required for end game content. This change would come along with making the 0 cycle 1 hypercarry+3support build impossible and mitigating the current DPS inflation(boss HP inflation) issue. Dunn and Master Gongshu should have been 4 star Preservation units way back. Sioban should have had Gallagher's kit and Gallagher could have been a new 4 Preservation unit. ETC. But Hoyo is messing up. Mydei is going to literally be a Destruction Tank with a huge HP pool and a taunt. Ughhh

There are not so many more abundance than preservation limited 5* (3vs2) And it was 2vs2 until 3 patches ago. The MAIN problem with preservation is not competing with abundance, but with DESTRUCTION. The "Tank" and "Counter" role gets taken by the likes of Clara, Yunli and Blade. As you said about the 4* foreshadowing the 5*. Preservation MC with it's taunt mecanic which got taken by... Yunli. Honestly, i dont think we need much more limited sustains. Just one for each archetype. There will bring a new one for the new meta, which will be abundance most probably. Preservation will make a comeback sometime later, when the IPC gets back into the focus of the story. Then, a Preservation-centered-team will probably be the meta.

I think the problem with Preservation (in general, besides filling niches) is that Shields are too generic and too good. A shield protects against all types of damage, while simultaneously being lot more reliable than healing (since healers run the risk of having allies one-shotted before they can be healed). Ironically, I think they need to make Preservation units less reliable to have more design space (for instance, Fu Xuan doesn't mitigate 100% of damage to allies). Make less generalist sustains, like a dodge-based unit, or shields that can only protect against a selected target, or shared shields like in Sunday's fight. Then give these characters better utility in exchange for their troubles.

Shields are only ever reliable in ridiculous end game modes like GnG SD and DU because high diff enemies can one shot you but End Game content such as PF, AS, and MoC would never one shot a character... True healing will always be greater than True shielding, since damage isnt the only thing that enemies can use against you... Debuffs and CCs are there and once it is yoj have no reliable cleanses for most of the Shielders

The only thing i could think of would be converting a % of the damage done into shields. Another could allow teammates who break enemies and give shields to the whole team (This would just be fugue stonks, but tbh no sustain break teams are arguably better) A 5* taunt preservation wouldnt be too bad depending on how they do that.

I think they could do a 5* dot preservation where Allies with shield can inflict dot on the enemy when they are attacked The shield wouldn’t be as potent as aventurine but to compensate, dot does a fair amount. Could really work in a dot team. Like Trend LC but as a character

Nah, both Baiul and Jepard are usable if you don't have the alternatives, just pick the right side, it's not that often that you get both sides of endgame hevy on CC. Alternatively pick Bronya/ Sunday with some effect res built on themselves and on Bailu/Gepard. Who cares if you DMG dealer got stunned if your action advance cleanses it anyway.

I just want to leave this here in case others feel the same. It really grinds my gears how terrible fu xuan is against enemies that deal aoe dmg. And in amphorious, since the memosprites count as an actual teammate she actually gets worse than i ever imagined. It's so so triggering. I only have her and Lingsha and yes, on certain teams that decimate content it's no issue, but if the stars align where i don't one shot the enemies it's wraps for her.

we get 1 preservation in each world and thats plenty enough. everyone with brain can realise how hard is to created those units witout turning them into a copy of the previous. im sure at the end of amphoreus we will be introduced to new preservation mechanics. so i hope people will stop complaining . if you need tank pull for aventurine or fu xuan rerun thats all you can do at this point

Because they set the bar high with Fu Xuan, a very strong and reliable sustain, and to make and sell another Preservation they set the bar even higher with Aventurine 😂 so even if hoyo makes a 4*, to most Aventurine users it'll be complete trash 😂 and they wont try to make another limited preservation for a while since the upcoming DPS (Mydei) would want their Hp to move and shielders wont be his go to sustains
