No one argues it is a bad thing, but making EU law above the nations law is absurd, and was rejected before. The EU needs to respect the nations sovereignty else it will shatter due to major differences. EU needs to be reshaped and go back to it values and not enforce their decision on a different state. Also a representative election has its own issue as when 2 or 3 major powers vote one side, the rest are irrelevant, especially due to only being able to vote on politicians from your own country. Media influences a country heavily, same goes for education and available parties, thus having people with legislative power over the whole union, that a majority might not want. And this is becoming a major issue that thorns the EU apart. But yes, free borders, trade and I would even argue a united defence, is important, but keep a nations sovereignty. As some of the decisions currently made in the EU are boiling my blood

Same happened to me over last 3-4 years. From EU-sceptic to "wanting even tighter integration". The more I learn about the EU how it works, the more I am in favor of if. EU should work on better public relations, both in "how it actually works" and "what benefits it has brought us". Yes, the EU has flaws, but wanting to throw the whole thing away just because there's a handful of issues one disagrees with, is IMO simply stupid. To get agreement on certain issues between 20+ states, every side has to make some concessions. For me personally, the benefits outweigh the concessions by far. (I am 53, and I have lived in a time when we had to change money and stand in queue at the border checks for multiple countries when going for holidays from Germany to Spain. And now I live happily in Finland, which would probably not happened without EU.)

@@thomasbootham2707 The EU is a project that has been decades in the making by countries who are tired of wars and seek economic boost, you can't realistically expect the EU to stop wars that are outside of its reach and you can't call it a failure until a war breaks out INSIDE the union. If you watch the video then you will understand that the way the EU ensures peace is by intertwining the economies of the member states and making these separate countries more unified, if a country doesn't want to get into the EU and gets involved in a war, than that's not a failure of the EU as the EU is a peaceful project between member states, not between every country in the world.

Many reasons why the EU as a project started out, at first it was a project to bring European countries together and prevent another war among its members from happening again by pooling resources together, hence the Coal and Steel Community many decades ago. As time went by, it became a political and economic union, which yes, unlike some that like to think the project was supposed to be economic only, it was always about political and economic integration over the long run. Now we have the modern EU, which is kinda a hybrid country/union with powers being in flux between the EU and it's members. As for the future of the EU, further integration is very likely, not because of want, but because of need, the geopolitical situation around the world is likely going to force us Europeans in the EU countries to work closer together by pooling resources together if we want to compete with the US and China long term, if we don't do further integration, it's going to become more difficult for us Europeans in the EU to protect our political, economic and social interest, because whether we like it or not, the ones with the bigger hammer are the ones that dictate global laws, rules and regulations, the EU countries on their own are too small to have any real impact and would get pushed aside by bigger powers, but through the EU, we have a much bigger voice, and we are going to need to see that in more areas, especially the military, forign policy matters and a capital market so the union can create a lot more funds for startup companies, especially high-tech companies which we are lagging behind the US and China on. If we don't do any of that, we'll eventually will go into decline as the gap in power from the US and China pulls ahead of us, in other words, we'll become less relevant and that will make it much harder to protect our interest, especially our high social standards that we Europeans take great pride in, the US and China don't seem to care about that and would probably be happy to water down our standards if they could, which a weaker EU would most likely allow that to happen, and it could be anything from lowering food standards so the US can sell its junk to us or opening up the health care system more to the private sector, which again, I'm sure the US would like that, and the list goes on and on and at least with the EU around, we have a lot of protection from that.

Give it 2-3 generations, another 75 years. @@ClemensKatzer the problem is that younger generations don't know what Europe was before the existence of the EU. older generations either had first hand experience or heard the stories from parents, teachers etc. if we want people to understand the EU we need to make sure to give it enough attention in school and make sure to teach the people why the EU exist and what the benefits of it are. (and also the things we need to keep improving) and i know, i'm from after 1990 and we barely learn about everything the EU does/is in school. for example visa free travel, and more recent even being able to cross borders without being checked. almost everyone in Europe experiences it and if it would go away riots would break out. but people don't realize we have that thanks to the EU, and if the EU would come to an end that would go away too

@@ClemensKatzer It's true and I wanted to point that out because it's remarkable how many people seem to think the EU project started out as an economic only union with no intention of political integration, it was always about political and economic integration, and if I recall, I think they tried political integration at first but found economic integration easier to do. Even thought I'm not in the EU, being as I live in the UK, I like to follow the EU project on what's going on and firmly believe that our future is in the EU, not just the UK but all other EU members, we might not always agree with some of the decision-making in the EU, but that's the ups and downs of these systems and in the end, we can achieve far more together than we can apart. Being as I'm from the UK and thought it was crazy the UK left the EU, I see it first hand the BS that goes around in how some like to paint the EU into something it's not by twisting the truth or outright lying about it that so many in the UK actually felt they were lied too in that they think they voted on joining an economic only union, when it was well known before the UK joined the EEC that it was a political and economic union, but those lies in much of the media stuck with many people, which eventually led to Brexit. On the plus side, Brexit is starting to reshape public thinking on the EU, I'm seeing far more pro EU sentiments in the UK then I've ever seen over the last 40 years in the UK, and honestly, it's quite refreshing to see, but I'm also a realist, there is little to no chance the EU would let the UK rejoin, even if the UK wanted to rejoin, at least not for another 2 to 3 decades, and honestly, I don't blame the EU and it's members for that, I agree with them and think there needs to be sizeable shift from the public, media and political parties in the UK on how they see the EU project so they become more constructive and not obstructive like they've been, but in any case, that will take time for that kind of shift, but early signs look promising. On the EU it's self, we should put it into perspective, what we European have achieved since the end of the second world war is remarkable, if we were to ask anyone back then if they thought it was possible what we have today, they likely would think we were crazy, but here we have, give it another 50 years and I can see more being achieved. Also, I agree with you, many don't like the EU, but I think we will regret it if it wasn't around, as you say, the UK is getting a taste of that, but it would actually be a lot worse if the EU were to be disbanded, it would be a mess in so many areas that's we take for granted, trade, free movement, regulations and so on, imagine having 27 difference policies all pulling in different directions, it would weaken us all in these countries. One last thing before I forget, I think the EU needs urgent reforms, something that should have happened years ago, there's too much of a disconnect from the EU and it's citizens, which allows the Eurosceptics to make up any stories they want on the EU, mostly based on lies, I think more powers need to shift towards the European Parliament away from the Commission, I also think they should merge the Commission and President as one roll and make it directly electable by the people, I also think the veto rules needs to go or at the very least, become more streamlined in that it can't be used to hold others to ransom as it's being used to do so today, with 27 countries, trying to get them all to agree is a hard task, that will become harder with new members that join in the future, because of that, major reforms are needed on the veto rules before any new country can join.

The story of the European Union always makes me tear up. Studying history, how all the neighbours hated each other, to now traveling all around Europe and meeting people everywhere proudly saying: "I am European!". Of course, there are many issues in the EU, but every place has them. I wish Europeans would not take what they have for granted, I wish they hadn't forgotten how it feels to fight for freedom and that living in peace is a privilege that some people are still dying for. Since my early teens I was feeling like a neighbour who was sometimes invited to an occasional party to this great family living nearby, who, for the rest of the time, was peeking behind the fence wishing to be them. 20 years passed, but this dream never subsided, only grew, until another dysfunctional family from a closeby neighbourhood came to destroy our home. But we didn't give up, we keep fighting while building a stronger friendship with our dear neighbour. I really like this video and I do agree with many of its messaging but I feel like one thing was forgotten in the discussion and its that unintentionally or not the EU was created by colonial powers who saw the world as it was after the war and realized to continue being a big player on the world stage they needed to form a cohesive union. Nothing wrong with that but various nation states did see the writing on the wall and realized that with the rise of the USA and later China as the real competition the solution was unification. They did it to save them selves in realpolitik ways of thinking, not much in what they wanted to avoid wars. I think this because one of the reasons Britain left the EU was a misguided idea of recapturing its glory from the past, them not realizing that the EU was that mechanisms but for the 21st century.

We are going to be a federation. The only sane way to go. Good neighbours we already are. National souveranity is bullsh*t. I feel like the EU still has a lot of problems with the way it is constructed. I think it needs to improve on some key arias, like corruption, democratic system etc. I do not understand why the is no system for handeling countries that walk back on democratic freedoms. Like Poland did a few years ago, and especially Hungary that does not seem to have a free and fair election. EU needs to be a more stable system that can handle and stand against undemocratic forces. We cannot allow dictators as part of EU, it undermines the trust in the system. And I don't think EU will last the next 80 years if this is not addressed. Still we are far from a WWII creaking out. But I guess you can say we are in the 20s. 😂

What EU should do in next 5 to 10 years: 1. EU common military 2. Control the migration, don’t allow Europeans disappear 3. More work, effort and more treaties towards a united federation of EUropean nations - USE 4. Accept the Western Balkans in the EU ( Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia, Kosovo ) + eastern partnership countries ( Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia ) 5. Strengthen relationship with UK, Swiss, Iceland, Norway and 5 microstates 6. Strengthen relationship with Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Russia 7. Abolish the veto in EU parliament 8. Legalize same sex marriages all across the EUropean continent 9. More efforts towards greener energy, better ecology with more recycling and lower pollution 10. for a federal Europe to succeed and get accepted by the public we need a lot more time for the cultures of Europe to blend. right now Europe is way to diverse to become a federal union, if that would happen to many (small) cultures and countries even would see their voice be unheard. right now we already have those problems in several European countries.

@@tomorrowneverdies567 as a Dutch person i can tell you that what the Dutch, Belgium, Luxembourg (together known as the BeNeLux) and Germany do isn't anything close to real federalization. it's just (close) cooperation, especially in area's where it's cheaper/better/easier to cooperate and share resources. - like having air ambulances that are allowed to fly in each other airspace and get send to emergencies in the neighbouring country. - having a cross border deal that ensures that police is able to keep pursuing a suspect even if he crosses the border. - or having that your armies work together. we have one tank regiment, and it's just more cost effective to have that being part of the German tank force than having to set up a maintenance supply line for those few vehicles. they are still Dutch forces and listen to the Dutch high command, but when the Dutch and German forces have the same goals they work as part of the German tank group. but these countries still have free reign in how the govern their own countries. in a federalized Europe the smaller cultures/countries will lose their voice, and the bigger once will make all the decisions. so unless they find a fair way to prevent that, 80% of the EU wouldn't want to federalize. take for example The Netherlands. we have the Randstad region, about 1/7th of the country where almost half the population lives. and in politics all other area's are kinda forgotten. the Randstad always gets dips on infrastructure projects, and the other regions have to wait years (some times decades) for a small upgrade. and if Europe federalizes that will probably become a Europe wide phenomena.
