This video about Why does the trip switch go off during lightning? Electrical Engineering Sinhala
The trip switch, also known as a circuit breaker or residual current device (RCD), is designed to protect electrical circuits and appliances from electrical faults and potential dangers. When lightning strikes, it can induce strong electrical currents and voltage surges in nearby power lines and electrical systems. These surges can cause a sudden increase in the electrical current flowing through the circuits in your home or building.
The trip switch is equipped with a current-sensing mechanism that constantly monitors the flow of electricity in a circuit. It is designed to detect any significant imbalance between the incoming and outgoing electrical currents. If the trip switch detects a sudden increase in current, which could be caused by a lightning strike-induced surge, it quickly shuts off the circuit by tripping or disconnecting the power supply.
The purpose of this automatic disconnection is to protect you and your electrical devices from potential damage or electrical hazards, such as fires or electric shocks. By disconnecting the power supply, the trip switch prevents excessive current from flowing through the electrical system, reducing the risk of damage to appliances, wiring, and other electrical components.
It's important to note that while the trip switch can provide some level of protection against lightning-induced electrical surges, it is not specifically designed to protect against direct lightning strikes. Direct strikes can generate extremely high currents that may bypass or overwhelm the protection offered by the trip switch. For comprehensive lightning protection, additional measures such as lightning rods and surge protectors may be required.
