This is the spiritspring itself, not the rock that unlocks it, you can only physically hit the rock that unlocks it, you can't hit the spiritspring itself, unless you use one of the shackles The shackles can also kill chariots and break illusory walls.

No, you can't. You have to find a separate rock pile somewhere else that unlocks the spiritspring. Using the shackle skips the entire process of looking around for the other rock pile, allowing you to break the rock at the spiritspring itself. This is likely a bug caused by the shackles having a massive aoe that deals no damage but registers as a hit, even to things that can't be hit directly. (Chariots, locked spiritsprings, it also works on illusory walls)
