I try to pay particular attention to my animals diet, expecially the donkeys, that tend to over-indulge on feed, because I have seen some of these sweet equines actually die from overfeeding, and surely wouldn't want to make the same mistake. Regarding the big horses, I do check their fat frequently, but because their muscle mass makes it more difficult, I rely more on judging how much their ribs are covered and on the upper part of their neck and their tailbone. Also, the norikers are incredibly frugal, despite their size they live on about 8-10 Kgs of hay per day, much less when they can graze in the pastures, and I find it hard to imagine how they could make do with less.

Horsecharity- I am very very worried now. The horse you showed that was "disgustingly overweight" is about the size of my horse...my horse may even be slightly fatter. he has been wormed and i know its all fat. I didnt know it was classed as abuse until recently [im 14] and my mum isnt a horse person so didnt know either.what would you suggest?I am quite embarassed to learn that my horse is so fat.hes a cobXmorgan and lives in a lush field in wales...Help!

The famous American horse Secretariat had a bad case of laminitis after he retired from horse racing. Secretariat also had an enlarged heart. Does laminitis cause an enlarged heart for a horse??

Next is to try to explain to people about how bad it is that their dog is too fat. Why people think fat is good on animals i cannot understand... We know how bad it is for us!?!

***** Are you sure about the apple bottom ? I mean, I don't recall ever seeing a draught horse without one. Even those who work daily display exuberant hind quarters.

Federico Alinovi A slight apple bottom is acceptable, but one that towers way over their spine is fat = ie possible health risk.

I alwais thought my Noriker mare was meant to have apple bottom, is she not ?

@DJDangersJessiJane Please don't do that. The horse will get frustrated. Give the horse a little bit at a time. Every day a little more pasture. We have low grass pastures. So they never get big amounts of grass. They can eat the whole day, and don't get really fat.

continued- how can I keep it from happening this year, but still keep her on pasture? I really hate stalling her or keeping her in a pen away from the others. I do plan on keeping her in a 1/2-3/4 acre lot with her miniature buddy in the spring. Anyhow, is there anything I can do to keep her on pasture for 3/4 of the year? Would a grazing muzzle benefit her? Thank you so much in advance!

Great video, I really enjoyed it! I have a question and I really hope you respond, because it would help me greatly. I bought a horse over a year ago (whom I love very much!) and she actually foundered (laminitis) about a half year after i got her. I was told that it was because of the grass and how much feed I was giving her. She was thin when I got her (definitly not a horror story, although her horror story was that she had a huge hold in her foot!) but I how can I keep it from happening--
