Have you ever held your hand up to your HVAC vent and knew something wasn’t quite right with the room temperature? Well, sometimes there’s a reason for this, and other times it can be chalked up to how air conditioning really works.
One of the most common questions we get is, “why is the air coming from my vents not matching the thermostat?” The answer is quite simple in many cases, but further investigation is required in other situations.

I recently solved my "faulty" heat pump thermostat problem after 6 years of owning this older Florida home It tended to read a temperature than seemed unreasonably cold when I knew the the house needed cooling. I would compensate by setting the temperature for the cold setting to maybe 65 dg F so that the unit would turn on when I usually like the temperature closer to 75 dg. When the two months of heating season in Florida came around the reverse was true. I recently popped open the casing of the thermostat and bushed out the dust that had accoumulated over the years and noticed that there was a hole the size of a golf ball that the wiring came through from the wall behind. The thermostat was reading the temperature of the wall cavity more than the hallway temperature! Worst still was that the heat pump coils were adjacent to the wall that the thermostat was mounted to inside a closet. When the coils were cold the theremostat was reading colder than reality. When warm the thermostat read warmer than reality. Fixed it by shooting in a can of "Great Stuff" expandalbe foam and now everything is hunkydory! Yeah, feel stupid that it took me so long to figure it out but I bet I am not the only one with this problem.

2:21 this was it for me and your video is the only one I've see that actually mentions this! For anyone not familiar, if your house feels like X degrees but your thermostat says it's something like X + 3 degrees, you can calibrate your thermostat by -3 or -4 degrees to get the correct temperature. I actually recommend getting a thermometer and reading the room temp so you can calibrate it to the exact degree, but something is better than nothing!

My thermostat is placed near the center of the home, away from sunlight or drafts and near the return air. It is reading that the room temp is 71° but the room that it is in (hallway) feels like the low 60's. Is it possible for the room temperature reading to be off by almost 10 degrees (F)

Unless your thermostat has failed and or lost calibration that may be a possibility. You can try putting a digital thermometer in that space to confirm temperature. If your Nest thermostat needs to be recalibrated you can contact Nest technical support or have us come out for service if near the Los Angles and surrounding areas

@allthingsplumbingheatingair I'm in Texas, and the thermostat is probably 20 years old. Everything else on the thermostat seems to work. It just doesn't show the correct room temperature, so it never tries to turn the system off. I'll probably just replace it soon. I just moved into this house about 3 months ago. Thanks for replying!

my Honeywell t5 is set to 75 and shows 75, but the actual temperature as shown by 3 independent thermometers is 72.5. Consistently. Doesn't this point to a thermostat that is faulty?

I have 16,500 bucks in my new system and the dang thing has never worked right. As I type this my thermostat is set to 76 and my bedroom is 82. My living room is 80. The company I used has has been out 4 times and can’t figure out the problem. The last trip I paid over 500 to relocate the thermostat and that did absolutely nothing. 82 in Florida is fun.

@@afcop13 Similar problem in my mom's Miami condo.We set thermostat to 65 and the room is reading 83 or 85 degrees. Some HVAC guys replaced a coil condenser on my mom's roof in March 21, costing my mom over $900 and it was working okay for a while but now the room temp is over 20+ degrees from the thermostat. Any suggestions?
