I see in my line of work that people that are racist tend to use the term Odinist. And I've learned that the term folk is also a nazi dog whistle. So, I don't like either of those terms myself. I use heathen mainly, though Norse pagan is also used by me frequently.

@@user-gq2iw1xj5e no, I'm of the lower middle class, otherwise known as the "ordinary people." I work a nine to five and pay my bills. I don't like the term Folk when used in a spiritual sense because of how it connotates an ethnic tie to the gods, when anyone can worship the gods. There is no reason to try to restrict the gods based on one's race. That's a disgrace.

@@user-gq2iw1xj5e being observant is what I'm doing. The term Folk as used in a spiritual sense is used to exclude people that don't have any ethnic ties to Europe. In fact, in the first few paragraphs of their website, the Asatru Folk Assembly states that there is a tie between one's blood and their religion. "As a part of the Great Aryan Religiosity, Asatru has a number of characteristic beliefs." This is clearly excluding those of non European descent. Not to mention that the only major organization that uses the term Folk in its name is the AFA, who was founded by an ethnonationalist named Stephen McNallen. It's for these reasons that I say the word Folk ought to be avoided by heathens. Additionally, the term Odinist was brought to the US by a member of the Nationalist Socialist Workers' Party of Denmark, Else Christensen, who was also arrested for smuggling drugs in 1993, though this doesn't necessarily reflect on her racial policies (her claims that "the jews control the Western sociopolitical establishment" do) but I do believe that it says something about her character outside of her racial views

First of all, thank you for confirming that Survive the Jive is alt-right. I thought he might be because while I hadn't yet had a chance to watch any of his content and had only skimmed some channel titles a couple of his titles and collabs were yikes-y, and because I hadn't looked into the actual content yet I wasn't sure if it was intentional dogwhistling or not. I also really appreciate you talking about the way people use Judeo-Christian as a dogwhistle, especially in Christian spaces. This is one I actually didnt know, though the more I think about it the more it really does make sense. The only people I really hear using the phrase "Judeo-Christian values" are heavily right-leaning people who want to appeal to a Christian audience and look academic. While I've heard the term in academic spaces a couple times, the people who use it are older and while nobody says the term is outdated, it feels really outdated - even without the dogwhistle context.

Re: "Judeo-Christian" This was a term introduced at least by the early '60s in liberal Chritian or post-Christian groups to explicitly INCLUDE JEWS. The context was reaction against the still vividly remembered horrors of the Nazis. Also, some Christian groups were using "Christian" to mean anything virtuous, respectable, or even reflective. Time passed. In the 80's, a Jewish professor of comparative religions, Jonathan Z. Smith (U of Chicago), complained that he had never met a Judeo-Christian in his life. He said that the term had become actually offensive to many Jews. By then, the correct terms were "children of Abraham," "Abrahamic Covenant," "Radical Monotheism," and "People of the Book." (This later was an important idea in Islam, which accepted both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament as valid Sacred Scripture. Of course, Islam excluded all the other religious followers from any civil rights: Zoroastrians, Hindus, Buddhists, Animists, and surviving Arab, Berber, and Hellenistic Pagans.) As the only "out" Pagan at the Divinity School at the time, I felt obliged to point it out when such terms were used to appropriate all virtues, and eventually to justify appropriate much of the land of "lesser folk without the Law" ---Kipling, "Recessional"

Just a tip for a good resource for anti-fascist/anti-racist type teaching, that is really good at the sort of undercover, psy-op thing that Ocean mentioned, is the channel Beau of the Fifth Column. He talks about all this sort of stuff from a community organizing perspective, but the way he talks and how he looks is like your typical southern good ol boy, deep in the heart of the Right. I find it saddening that almost every denomination of pagan seems to have a folkist bent. Obviously Heathenry and Hellenism. But also discussions of some kind of 'blood inheritance' infiltrates Kemeticism and even Celtic paganism. Despite having largely animistic worldviews that allow for the co-existence of different gods. I stay away from the "asatru" label for this reason. While they are my main pantheon, nothing stops me from venerating Hermes, Thoth or the Morrigan if the situation arises. We isolate ourselves with the walls we build and the boundaries we define.

This is a topic that I've been wanting to figure out for a long time. I didn't even know the damn word dog whistle was even a thing until Trump got into office. Its taken me awhile to really hash it all out and figure out what the hell everyone is talking about lol. I feel like my parents when I started to listen to Nirvana and they didn't understand the music. This topic is huge in all of the facebook groups that I've tried to join. I joined for the community and the learning and nearly every meme or topic tends to turn into well I'm .25% Scandinavian so I'm basically Ragnar Lodbrok reincarnated. This then turns into people "hammering" down the point about race and how you have to have the blood in order to worship the gods. It just gets out of hand and its almost no use trying to correct them with how many swarm the comments. Thank you for putting this all out there, its helped me immensely understand the history of the WS and is going to help me avoid those organizations and groups that use the symbols and language in their works.

It hurts me to hear that the term "Wõdan" is also corrupted by nazis. It is the historical and etymological correct name of the south germamic interpretation of the God (who may or may not later become known as Odin in the north). He is seen as a source of inspiration, magic, wisdom and healing and I always felt a connection to these values. As a person from south Germany I absolutely don't want to be seen as a nazi or share any similarities with them. So cause of that facist abuse of an old german Term, I am forced to use the northern Name so I can't be associated with racist scum. End of my rant. 😅 Great content you guys do over there and it is allways interesting to see which simular or different problems heathens in the USA have to face.

This has been Immensely enlightening for me, I’ve known of and am a fan of Contrapoints and have been for a while but I guess I haven’t really thought of certain dog whistles in reference to the faith, I’ve been practicing for Years and I’m just now learning some Very enlightening shit from this. When I was first starting out with my brother we stumbled upon the only heathen/“Asatru” videos about it, Survive the jive, WoO, even Stephen Mcnallen, now the Latter of which was rather obvious to us that he was racist but… with others our rose tinted glasses were and and we weren’t looking for it, so we just didn’t see it. I knew some of STJ’s comments were iffy but only realised the scope when I saw a colab with “the golden one” and I dipped. But there’s so much racism engrained into Heathenry that I just never noticed, and it gives me a greater understanding of how to spot different people/groups now. And for that Thank You! Because Ik that first starting out you always bump into labels like Åsatru, Odinist, Norse pagan/polytheist, and Heathen, and I feel like many of us use some forms of it interchangeably without thinking about the repercussions, or connotations. Hell I never even had a second thought about the “Nine noble virtues” it’s so overused in social media platforms it became an accepted and normal thing to me… Thank You So Much!

I read somewhere we use it for fascist dogwhistles because of experiments Francis "father of eugenics" Galton did to try to prove his racist ideas, but I haven't looked into it much. Atlantis: there are two big sources on this. The guy you may not have heard of is Wilhelm Landig who had some bizarre ideas about the Aryans being from Atlantis. A novelist (most famous work the Thule Trilogy, which is what it fucking sounds like) who had been in the SS, he's also the one responsible (near as we can tell), for the resurgence of the Sonnenrad as a symbol. He also helped popularise the nazi World Ice Theory and the (almost certainly) false, but popular even among well meaning people Gurdijeff In Tibet Connection. Landig - fucking nutso ex nazi soldier that he was - is an important name to be familiar with. I strongly advise Nicholass Goodrick Clark's 'Black Sun' - it's an exhaustive (and sometimes exhausting) history of fascist occultism. Get it as an e-book and then Ctrl+F a term you have a question about, 9/10 times he will give you the answer and 6/10 times the answer will be screaming "LANDIG!" at the sky on your knees. The other one is Evola. Evola definitely talks about Atlantis in Pagan Imperialism. I've not read his other proto-fascist bullshit books, but it definitely popped up in there. I've been told it's in RATMW as well, though I haven't gone looking myself yet. Hyperborea is also some Evola shit.

'The Golden One' is a Faschist.... Hearing that said in this video drove home for me how both really good and very naïve my judgement can be sometimes. I remember stumbling onto his channel some years ago when I was first learning about Norse Paganism. But something about him rubbed me the wrong way, made me feel uncomfortable watching his videos. His views on things felt skewed somehow and I eventually abandoned him for other resources. I'm glad to see my intuition was correct in this matter but up until recently I'd found myself in that same situation a number of times. I'd find a source that seems legit, red flags start flying and I begin to question their legitimacy and I eventually move on. It was only once I found Wolf's and Ocean's videos that I'd honestly begun to be more observant of the media I intend to absorb. I've been learning what sources to avoid, what symbols and DOG WHISTLES to keep an eye out for. I've learned to be wiser in my research because of this community that's taken the time to set out those stepping stones for people like me, who aren't as well educated on the subject of Norse Paganism but yet fully understands there's a dangerous line that must be acknowledged and didn't really know where it started exactly. Thanks Ocean, Wolf and all of your followers for helping to guide me and other newcomers like me down a safer path :)

In a park I often take my dog to, their little education area that tells about the scant information known about the tribes from that area are completely gone now. As a white 4th gen American, It doesn't feel like I was raised with much culture, mostly just capitalism. I enjoy media like The Last Kingdom/Vikings/Outlander and they sparked my interest in British and Scandinavian history. Studying the countries and cultures of my ancestors has filled that part of me that longed for heritage. It's a shame all these things I love have become so stigmatized by the neo-nazi plague. I worry if I'll be seen as one of them for wearing my Thor pendant. It's also wacky that getting involved in communities around these subjects are just a matter of meeting the wrong people, or getting curtailed the wrong recommendations for someone to descend down the alt-right rabbit hole.

I had to pause a few minutes in because I worked in education as both a librarian and teacher for over 20 years in Texas. I left in 2016 for health and mental health reasons, but jumped back in briefly for a few years. All that to say, currently I’m struggling in a lot of areas but in the past few years I’ve seen a path to healing and growth through a pagan path, but have flitted around to different creators, liking them for various reasons, but not gelling with anything in particular. I have largely Germanic (contintental and Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian) ancestry , but went anywhere but towards Heathenry bc the only thing I associated with it was white supremacy bc Nazis (I honestly didn’t realize about it in current Heathen groups.) I had judged all modern Heathens without knowledge. Such a snowflake, 🙄, past me was, lol. I’ve derailed the point of this comment, but oh such enlightening introspection y’all’s channels have brought. In any case, one reason I burnt out of public education was having been awoken to the legacy of white supremacy as I became a more experienced teacher. I taught high school social studies, but helped tutor middle school. I also worked as a librarian in two different situations. Over the course of 20+ years, I was less able to stomach the uneasiness and discontent with the profession and with myself honestly. Continuing to find ways to “teach” the required content but by totally disengaging from actual teaching. On the one hand, I could see that what we were being ordered by the state to teach about world and US History in addition to the huge numbers of teachers that I knew - let me clarify-other white teachers who honestly saw absolutely no problems with any of it. Now to the point- I often felt uneasy about the almost exclusive focus on western civilization and it’s importance in the curriculum. Even world history- one of my many subjects- was exclusively viewed through a lens of the supremacy of western culture. When we studied Asian and African and indigenous native peoples- it was a short spin through major time periods, technological inventions, all crammed into a section of a section on the history of china and most of the other history through the colonial perspective. I didn’t realize what it was exactly. But I was educated more by the lives of the students. My interactions with them and listening to their stories, seeing the physical and mental trauma most of them dealt with on a daily basis. I’d say they taught me more about myself and what kind of a person I want to be than I ever taught them anything of importance. So, I feel a strong sense of rightness, belonging, and hope. A long winded comment but the spirits of the deities have CLEARLY spoken to me. I’m super happy and truly hopeful for the first time in a long time. I want to harness this feeling but I almost feel like my mind will burst with whirling thoughts too. Anyways, I’ll try to awkwardly sign off because I never know how to exit conversations correctly, lol. Take care!

Proto-Indo-European is a reconstructed language, a tool developed by linguists to track the evolution of the Indo-European language family (which include almost all European languages (Basque and the Finno-Ugric languages being notable exceptions), as well as quite a few languages in Iran and India), by positing a HYPOTHETICAL earliest common ancestor. THAT IS ALL IT IS. A made up language that may or may not have been what the ancestors of all of these peoples sounded like. Any and all claims of a culture or a religion is pulling stuff out of your a**. It's idiotic, offensive, and as a linguist I take further offence at building stuff out of imaginary bricks that was meant to be something completely different. Something generations of linguists spent their entire careers building, to boot.

@@WolfTheRed Fairly unstructured rant about historical revisionism to the point of making stuff up wholesale instead of "just" rewriting history. And basically shitting all over the field of historical linguistics in the process. All in the name of their awful ideology, of course (crimes against science is nothing when you are allready dealing with crimes against humanity). Finally, Indo-European =/= just Germanic. If you want to actually reconstruct the religion of this hypothetical culture (which is kind of pointless, as we have no sources whatsoever, and linguistic descent =/= cultural descent), you would need to look at Greco-Roman, Slavic, Baltic, Celtic, Zoroastrian, some Central Asian, and Hindu mythologies as well, among many others. And as a side note: PIE is not even used by linguists all that much anymore. It was a milestone achievement in the field, but it's now quite dated (the rediscovery of the Hittite language was a major problem, as it was older than the languages used to recreate PIE, yet looked very little like how the linguists expected). And adding the "Don't Feed the Nazis" sign has essentially made it nothing more than a point of scholarly history. Sorry for another rant. Hope this one was clearer. TLDR: If you are not talking about the development of the field of historical linguistics, there is no point in mentioning PIE.

@gg2fan
@gg2fan 6 ай бұрын
I'll try to address this in a good faith manner 'whiteness' is NOT a racial category. It is an artificially contrived category that emerged out of colonialism to determine a cultural and economic in-group under the new social relations of capitalism, against which out groups can be defined to determine whether it's ok to exploit, oppress, and enslave them. Keeping in mind that the white working class was oppressed and exploited anyway, because the real battle lines of society are not ethnic or national but based on your class position within the economy. But anyway, the concept of whiteness just emerged out of the cultural upheaval of modernity where traditional understandings of community were uprooted by fundamental systemic changes to the way the economy was organized, with people being ripped off their ancestral land in things like the Enclosure movement, deracinating the peasantry, removing them from their traditional notions of community as they're forced into wage labor in the cities and away from communal tenant farming. Culturally, this created a new need to identify who is 'us' and who is 'them' in a world where this question is no longer immediately answerable. Previously, you wouldn't even need to ask it, 'us' is my community, 'them' is any community outside of mine. Now people needed new categories of identity, new way to define themselves within an in-group, out of which emerged nationalism, and the white vs non white dichotomy. It only very vaguely refers to actual ethnic categories, which is why it's such a moving target that can be shifted and morphed to include or exclude Italians, Albanians, Chechens, etc. What that means is 'white power' and 'black power' don't ACTUALLY refer to the ethnic categories they imply. That's not what they really mean. They're referring to the in group vs out group categories that emerged out of colonialism, so 'black power' or similar such phrases are liberatory slogans of equality within a colonial hierarchy of domination, and 'white power' is essentially a call to enforce and reify the hierarchies AND the domination, oppression, and inherent logic of supremacy they carry with them, because there's no other way to explain and justify the existence of the hierarchy, and the placing of whites above blacks and browns, without claiming it's the just and correct ordering of society because whites are just better. Don't be pro-white. That's at best a totally immaterial and meaningless political identification that won't get you anywhere you want to go, it's just you feeling somehow culturally wounded and aggrieved and letting it blind you to things you should actually be caring about and trying to address, which are very easy to see once you look past immaterial identitarian feuds. It's the guys who determine the actual everyday circumstances of your life, your bosses who keep your wages low and organize politically to keep you voiceless in the actual conditions of your own existence.
@Humanophage
@Humanophage 6 ай бұрын
@@gg2fan Try to keep your posts more succinct. On topic, "working class" is an artificial grouping that pulls together completely different lifestyles like a cashier, a farmer, and a janitor. They also have vastly different economic interests, and just about everything about them is different. The factory worker working class which the Marxists were concerned with never even comprised a majority in any country except briefly Belgium. Moreover, it's currently one of the most right-wing groups and has been for a while. "White race" is an objective population of biological Europeans. You can check any genetic study and they will comprise a distinct cluster. Contrary to the "whiteness studies" myths, groups like the Irish and Italians were not excluded from whites as they were permitted to immigrate in large amounts to countries which openly prohibited non-white immigration. Human societies are formed around populations, not around classes. A society can be 100% racially homogeneous but never 100% homogeneous by class. There are many examples of successful racially homogeneous societies. But attempts to create class homogeneity end up in failed utopias a la Cambodia at worst, and stagnation a la 70s UK at best. Moreover, nowadays the Marxists are especially anachronistic and harmful as they tend to promote mass migration, i.e. they promote a direct threat of replacement.
@gg2fan
@gg2fan 6 ай бұрын
@@Humanophage It has nothing to do with lifestyles, working class is a VERY tangible term that groups people according to their relationship to capital and the means of production. They have exactly the same economic interests; if you work for a wage, you want better wages, better hours, better benefits, more power over your own labor, and your boss wants the opposite for you. It's a very clear conflict with much, MUCH more tangible results on the actual quality of your life than pursuing some abstract notion of racial interests, which will only obfuscate the class conflicts that ACTUALLY produce negative outcomes for everybody, regardless of what color they are. There are definitely different sections of the working class, which is often a point that's willfully ignored by non-marxists, so it's good that you're aware of that I suppose- the exploiter/exploited dynamic is not a binary, it's a spectrum with infinite room for nuance. The problem of orienting your political thought and efforts around ethnicity is that it's not an actionable agenda. How do you make things 'better' for white people? Kick out the brown people? I mean, if that's where you are, at least you're upfront about it, but I don't think that's either realistic or good for anybody. This is the greatest strength of class politics, is that it's 1. Immediately clear what the political goals are, and how they are to be pursued- organize and federate the disprate working classes into political coherent entities that can make demands and lobby for their shared interests, which are themselves very simple, better protections and a more fair share of the value they produce. In addition, this makes things better for EVERYBODY, it improves the conditions of the white race (minus the small handful of ultra-wealthy on top, but if your politics is chiefly concerned with protecting THEM of all people... I don't know what to tell you) and also improves the conditions for every other race because class politics are race-agnostic. I really just think you're failing to identify where the real problems emerge here. Migration is not itself a problem, it's the enforced conditions of neo-colonial subjugation and oppression that inevitably create crises of immigration in the first place. If you want to stop the flow of migrants, the answer is ALSO left wing class politics that challenge the global capitalist meat grinder that mulches South Americans into paste for the profits of the Coca Cola company. 'replacement' is just the consequences of colonialism coming home, you have to look further and deeper than the surface level reactionary narratives if you want to actually solve these problems. and I'm sorry, but leftists don't do succint very well lol
