In response to some comments so far: A priori, I would expect that studying morality 24/7 would increase one's moral behavior at least somewhat. At the very least, because it is harder to ignore moral standards when you've been thinking about them constantly, than when they never pop onto your radar. So the "Telescoping" (or psychophysical numbing) explanation I suggested in the video was a theory for why we might see no *overall* effect of studying morality on moral behavior -- i.e., a decrease from the Telescoping effect might be counteracting the increase from, let's call it, the "attention" effect.

Julia Galef There are two ways that ethicists could in principle be more moral than a control group of other philosophers. One would be if they are more diligent when it comes to the kinds of ethical decisions that both groups make about eating meat, voting, and so on, which I take it were the kinds of things Eric Schwitzgebel has been examining. If the world becomes more permeated with ethical choices for someone who studies ethics though, then ethicists could also end up being more moral by bringing ethical considerations to bear on a broader range of issues. That is true even if they don't happen to behave more morally on the decisions that both groups make. As for the telescoping effect, I can see how making an effort to vote would end up being one of a much larger number of things an ethicist rather than a non-ethicist might think are worth doing, in which case ethicists might find themselves spreading their moral effort more thinly, but a good test of the telescoping theory might be to compare the rate of unethical behaviors as well as ethical behaviors. I don't expect a telescoping effect would apply to the amount that each group lies, cheats on partners, etc. because these aren't as subject to the feeling that one's contribution to the moral good is just a drop in the ocean, unless of course there are people who think "I may as well cheat because I have so many wives" or whatever the relevant analogue would be in that case.

Better to take action and say move my elderly neighbors garbage can back into their garage instead of write this KZbin Comment, oh well. Theoretically you can take pride in hypocrisy! Julia, veganism is easy and simple, and vegans typically say going vegan was one of the best decisions of their lives. If you are not vegan, please go vegan. Veganism is about nonviolence. First and foremost, it’s about nonviolence to other sentient beings. But it’s also about nonviolence to the earth and nonviolence to yourself. If animals matter morally, veganism is not an option - it is a necessity. Anything that claims to be an animal rights movement must make clear that veganism is a moral imperative. Embracing veganism as a moral imperative and advocating for veganism as a moral imperative are, along with caring for nonhuman refugees, the most important acts of activism that you can undertake. +Julia Galef - Hmmm. I've certainly noticed this phenomenon in my own academic life, but I suspect there is a simpler answer. Moral philosophy, in my opinion, doesn't get anywhere. After all the years of debate and analysis, philosophers still vehemently disagree over what makes an action 'morally good'. So while academics stand up for one position or another, they have no resounding proof that they have chosen the 'right' formula. It deteriorates into a meaningless game, and keeps them in a job. I've ended up where I started out, really; a subjectivist. What moral discourse is actually about is expressing the sort of world we prefer to be a part of, and what sort of person we are or want to be. We can say that certain acts disgust or offend us, but not that they are objectively 'wrong'. So my answer to your question boils down to this: What sort of world someone would prefer to be a part of depends on how they feel about basic standards, such as fairness, honesty, etc. The Egoists (or narcissists) among us will prefer a world in which they can cheat, and get preferential treatment.
@linusverclyte4988

Seeing that most people had a religious upbringing they were almost certainly told that certain actions were forbidden by god (murder, theft, lying...) yet this does not preclude alot of them from doing those things (even with the all knowing boogy man looming over them). I'm fairly sure the guards at Auschwitz knew deep down what they were doing was wrong but they had a stronger motive that allowed them to counteract that belief. Basically the main reason why human-beings don't act morally is because they have an ego that tells them to look out for them and disregard others in so far as they don't serve the primary goal. Animals without selves like ants do not display selfish behaviour and die for the group if necessary without any mental effort at all. As a human-being it's actually hard to do the right thing when you can benefit from doing the opposite or just doing nothing. Certainly when the stakes are high, e.g you see a wallet with a thousand bucks and no-one is around to see what you'll do: will you return it or not? If yes what if it contained 10.000 bucks or 100.000? You know you should return it because that's the right thing to do but having a lot of money which you didn't have to work for is also nice. This is only reinforced when, as in this case of moral philosophers, people don't expect you to exhibit moral behaviour or at least not more than the average person. When I have a little more time I'll look into the theory you suggested.

When I, by the end of High School, started going to debating competitions, often pertaining to ethical questions, I wasn't doing it to "make the world a better place" in any capacity. I did it because it was interesting. I feel like this could be true for many moral philosophers. They are in the field not because they consider making the world a more ethical place to be of vital and immediate importance (which would necessitate their participation in bettering the worldstate), but because they see ethics as one of if not the most intriguing puzzle in existence. In other words, their number one priority is solving ethics, and actually making the world better is more of a secondary goal... or even a mere side effect.

Debating ethics is what they like to do, it's competitive, gets them engaged and is interesting, as you said. Life is so much more than what any person finds interesting. An example would be, the ethical debate comes to an end and one of them is most likely going home to a marriage that will end in divorce (50%). In the bigger spectrum of life you deal with people and situations that you don't want to deal with and are also out of your control. Doing something that you love is in your control and adds to your energy. Dealing with all the little fires that are part of a toxic relationship or other area of life with it's own problems will exhaust your energy, it will deplete the executive functioning centers of the brain. In a debate, the speaker, like an athlete is ready to go, has a strategy and a mindset. In all the other areas of life you can't be that prepared so you're out of your comfort zone. The evil personalities of this world are in it for themselves and don't even care about truth or being moral unless it's a manipulation in front of other people, but that's not being moral that scheming for a good reputation because of all the awful they are really up to.
@tudornaconecinii3609
@tudornaconecinii3609 2 жыл бұрын
@@aarond3657 "The evil personalities of this world are in it for themselves and don't even care about truth or being moral" - This is true, but slightly underspecified. While evil, selfish people don't care about being moral, they do care about morality. Creating a stable thriving environment in which everyone is better off is just as valuable for them as it is for normal people, because they are part of "everyone" too. The classic example is that thieves would prefer to live in a society in which LESS theft was taking place, such that they could feel more security about the stuff they take remaining with them (as long as the measures taken to reduce theft didn't directly impede their personal ability to steal). A less obvious but more pragmatically relevant example is the big corporations who support policies increasing the minimum wage, because they have the excess profits necessary to sustain the increase while their smaller competitors choke. This basically amounts to two instrumentally nifty concepts: 1. that one needn't be virtuous to be coopted in the search and refinement of morality 2. that one needn't be virtuous to act virtuously, if it is convenient for them to do so.

I think the answer is simpler. It's the same reason very intelligent people make seemingly stupid decisions in their personal lives. Intellect and character are not the same thing. Being able to reason morality is just not the same thing as being able to practice it. For example if you have a temper, knowing anger makes people act irrationally is not going to stop you acting irrationally when angry.

MrNewberryL I'm not sure it was the contention. Maybe I wasn't paying attention. I don't think that's true though. It may be true that people who identify themselves as philosphers are less moral, but I think it's fairly obvious why that is.
@polaropposite1614
@polaropposite1614 9 жыл бұрын
alienzen Not sure I agree -- there's a difference between (largely) uncontrollable outbursts of emotion, and cogitated moral/immoral behavior. Most practices require both intellectual and emotional input, and moral philosophy is just a way of adding intellectual weight to our actions (while mediating our emotional inclinations). So raising a divide between intellect and emotion doesn't solve much. There's definitely a difference between moral reasoning and moral practice. The question becomes, then, why are ethicists so interested in ethics? Is it because ethics are important to them, or because it's just an avenue for them to work their intellectual muscles? That's rather depressing, I think...

I have put more thought/energy into the question of "how do i be a good human/better human" than I've invested time or energy in anything else. Albeit I'm only 21 so my time is limited but i can say I've sunk more than 10000 hours with ease though there's no measuring it, its a daily behavior that's frequent and even ritual, coinciding with certain other regular behaviors of mine like showering and going to sleep. I agree 100% there is this telescoping effect, the more you consider the easier it is to disregard smaller things. What i find most interesting is if you go big enough you'll hit a point of nothing really matters yet it really does because its all there is anyway.. in other words, you can choose if any given action is or isn't significant, its utterly dependent on your perspective and standpoint in reality. What makes something valuable(significant) to someone is weather or not it falls in line with goals they have for themselves. Even if those goals have never been spoken of or succinctly thought. Now from here its important to understand that all of us fundamentally have the goal of feeling good. Its literally chemistry. At the point the matter that makes us up is out of balance it feels and is in almost all ways bad, ugly, and undesirable. These thoughts have led me to a point of seeking a lifestyle that propagates good. Thus caring about the small interactions that seem insignificant to the whole. There's a lot of tricks to making oneself care about the little worlds we all occupy but at the end of the day its simply work. You must put energy into the world to get energy out. It feels good to try. So for the most selfish of reasons i give a damn about the little things around me. I do it because if i don't MY little world is ugly. These ideas are honestly simple but i think the fact is that thinking only gets you so far. You must also act. So to bring this little rant back around to the initial question i would simply argue that behaving morally is an act of balance and continuous effort and the conditions "philosophers" tend to subject themselves to aren't the most beneficial to nurturing balanced lifestyles. Tbh the majority of the worlds society's "norms" aren't balanced, often out of date and out of touch with our emerging changing world. I could go on and on but id be surprised if anyone made it through all of this, ultimately I've said nothing new to anyone I'm sure haha.

As a philosophy major, I think ethicists don't act as morally as they preach because of their ego. Of course this doesn't apply to all, but in general, people who are involved with more "intellectual" fields tend to have a bigger ego (in my experience), so they might put themselves above others. I've found this to be consistent with math, physics, and engineering majors as well. I.Q. is standalone from E.Q. - emotional quotient. I believe there is a severe problem even in the name "moral philosopher". While moral philosophers are dedicated to the most bizarre scenarios, and to giving objective and absolute perspectives to morality, the rest of us just live and let live. And we are the ones who actually give meaning to "morality in action". If you actually want to study morality you do not start with "you have Hitler and Stalin and a gun with one bullet, who do you kill". You start with your dog, or any other sophisticated, gregarious animal and look how they instinctively have an approach to morality, or at least to the precursors to morality. You see how the basics of morality are evolutionary traits, driven by the fact that life in a pack is a lot more survivable than life alone, and that self sacrifice is necessary for the survival of the pack. Packs with too many egotistical tyrants tend to die off, and packs with self-sacrificing individuals tend to survive more, and have more offspring. On the other hand, when you read philosophers, you get the idea that morality started with philosophers, and only grows with more philosophers. You get diverted away from the fact that we have been a morality-oriented species for ever, maybe even before words existed. We know that we cared for apparently useless old and sick individuals because we have found bones of old people with wounds or sickness that would have killed any animal that was not cared for. We see how antelopes run in a formation where the weaker individuals are in the center, and the stronger adult males are in the outer ring, and frequently die. We see how the stronger wolf can easily kill any other member of the pack but doesn't. Morality is all around us, but moral philosophers apparently only see it in the most implausible scenarios.
