Why Don't New York City Subways Have Platform Barriers?

Safety advocates say that adding platform barrier doors - seen in transit hubs like London and many U.S. airports - can help save people from ending up on subway tracks, and it’s not a new idea. But the MTA said that the idea wouldn’t work.
Though some believe if there's a will, there's a way.
The new push for safety comes after Michelle Go was pushed to her death in front of a subway train at the Times Square station Saturday.

Those reasons the MTA chairman gave of why barriers can't be installed are nonsense. London and Tokyo are much older than NYC and they have subway barriers that are ADA accessible... It's really about money they don't want to spend. "It is never been prioritized - and that's a failure." 100% right. Safety and infastructure improvements need to be a priority at this point. There's no excuse.

There is though Your system has Cars that have different door placements Suddenly adding platform doors would result in entire fleets being retired and needing an entirely new fleet of R160s or R211s A Set of subway cars can already cost around a million Times that by the amount of sets you need to replace That would soar over the billions and would leave NYC paralyzed and possibly broke

Tokyo's subway was in 1927 and London's Tube doesn't have barriers and they do have similar pushing incidents but rare. Have you looked at the stations and cars? Newer cars have different door lengths and what if they A / C train is routed over the F line? Nope different cars. Some stations have narrow platforms so are sloped or curved like Union Square. The reality is that is is not that feasible.

How about actually keeping criminals (repeating offenders) behind bars? Having a barrier is just a preventative measure but it is not a sure way to save lives from the hands of criminals.
@jimbo1637
@jimbo1637 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with this attitude is that it creates MASSIVE permanent holding facilities that cost tax payers and insane amount of money. And while some criminals can't be rehabilitated, some can. Forcing the ones that have the potential to become productive members of society to become burdens on the state is crazy. The solution is to help these people, not just lock them in a box somewhere.

@@jimbo1637 Money is not the issue, it's just allocation of funds vs what is deemed more important. Forcing criminals that can't be rehabilitated to walk among society is a burden to the community. And, I think it is a human right for civilians to walk in the streets and feel safe. Normal people should not have to walk out in the street and be paranoid of what might happen. I think zero tolerance is the only solution. crazies go to rehabilitation centers and public executions for murderers. For those that could be rehabilitated, they should learn from these consequences that they don't end up in rehab centers or get executed.

@@DZ-bz1ww no one is saying murders should walk free. What I'm saying is American prisons do not attempt to rehabilitate anyone, they're just a box where we shove people who've committed crimes. Let's say I can't get a job, so I sell weed to feed my family. Instead of getting job training, I'm labeled a felon and thrown in jail. When I get released, in most states I will immediately owe a supervision fee to my parole office. The only issue is, since I'm a felon, I can't get a job. So now I'm back in the exact same situation as before. I need money, but can't get a job. In all likelihood, this means I will have to go back to selling drugs to pay the state. If I had been given job training instead of getting sent to jail, I would likely be a productive tax payer at this point, but prison forced me back to selling drugs.

The answer is very simple,the MTA refuses to use any monies allocated to them for much needed things like barriers. The money collected from fare hikes,this new amount of money coming to them soon,none of it is accounted for,or made public what is done with it.A million times over barriers could have been put up,to avoid tradgedis like this one.All the big wigs on the MTA board seem to be benefiting from the money,not the passengers,they have to be made accountable for misspent money

“It would be very difficult to retrofit a barrier door system onto the existing New York subway system. Train sets are of different model cars and lengths for instance and they couldn't all line up exactly where the platform doors were situated. It would also require a centrally operated system to control exactly where trains stop on the platform. These systems are a good idea - but practical only for systems being built new, not retrofitted.” Credit @Montgomery Mall

US MTRs are so outdated. But there is a way, build an automation barrier fence underneath on the platform. When the train is completely stopped at the station, the fence barrier is automatically removed underneath the platform. And when the train is completely departed, the fence barrier is automatically raised up to the top of the platform. This solution should work for an outdated MTR.

They could use barriers similar to the ones found in Tokyo Japan which go up when a train comes to a complete stop at a station. Shortly after the doors close, the barriers would drop down over the platform’s edge before a train leaves the station.

Aside from money, one major issue with installing platform barriers is that there is no uniformity in the rolling stock along the lettered lines. You have 60 and 75 foot cars running on the same tracks, thus the width between doors and the number of doors along the train will be different.
@AzAzMusic

There might be a solution for this. The outdated MRTs can be retrofit by implementing sensors on the trains and at each rail station. When a train is approaching the rail station, the train will automatically slow down and stop EXACTLY ON THE MARKED LOCATION of the rail. When this works, then build an automation door barrier like the one in Japan and China. This will solve the problem we are facing right now.

Honestly, the subway is going to be renovated at some point, it’s just a matter of time. This world is advancing at such fast speed, especially the last twenty years, and New York should consider the safety of their people more. If you can’t renovate the subway system because of the ventilations, there’s always professionals out there who can figure something out. There’s no way New York subways will be able to hold for another few decades, it’s going to be a joke at that point. Other countries who aren’t as economically and technologically advanced have already installed barriers on train platforms. If you’re gonna renovate the subways eventually, why not do it now so New Yorkers don’t have to live in fear anymore.
