My husband and I have been ball-room dancers for the past 14 years. We've found that, with practice, most people can pick up and follow a beat. In all that time, however, I have met one or two men who just can't follow the beat to save their lives. It is terribly confusing because the guy leads and the lady follows. If your leader is lost, it's hard to find the way. Sometimes I can back lead but as I usually go backwards, I can't see where we're going. I don't know about the other women, because I don't usually dance with them.

Black, Asian, and Latino people (South and Central American) tend to dance better because music with more percussion was/is more prevalent in our cultures. Especially black people, all we do is dance. Sure, it's a stereotype, but there's always truth to some stereotypes.
@richmahogany110 жыл бұрын
i notice you threw asian in there. asian music has a lot of percussion? and asians dance a lot to it? news to me. btw all music has a beat, doesn't matter if it's from a drum. the reason blacks and latinos will have a higher rate of good dancers is simply because culturally they like to dance more. more practice = better at. you will probably find that on average, asians are better badminton players and chopstick users.
@pooploopify10 жыл бұрын
Ryan Couture Japanese Taiko music is an example.
@richmahogany110 жыл бұрын
Jarbon The Great I'm just saying, would you say that asians typically know how to dance more than whites - and if they do, they do it to japanese taiko music? camman, asians are the same as whites in this regard - neither of our cultures dance much.
@pooploopify10 жыл бұрын
Ryan Couture Remember, Filipinos, Indians, and Indonesians count as Asian. And most of the music found in the different, previously stated cultures, do have more percussion than music native to most European cultures.
@cloud-w2v10 жыл бұрын
Ryan... You are ignorant of Asian culture. Most Asian cultures have a set of percussion instruments. Look at a Chinese New Year Parade, you hear drums and cymbals pounding as the people gather and lions dance. The basis of Indian music relies on percussion instruments such as the Tabla. Percussion instruments are universal. Almost every country has their own set of them no matter the variations. As a Chinese, it's true that Asians (more like Eastern Asians actually) don't "dance" to percussion rhythms like other cultures do, but that does not mean it doesn't have percussion or rhythm. Some Southern Asian countries do have dance styles based on percussion rhythms... The reason we don't think that Asians use percussion instruments is the fact that we aren't accustomed to their cultures. We are more accustomed to African and Latin cultures... But it is quite true that Africans and Latinos dance a lot (often very good) to percussion rhythms.

I wonder if having irregular rhythms in your body, could correlate or contribute to being beat deaf? I don’t think I have a very good sense of rhythm or beat, or at least the ability to replicate that on my own (tho a few others would disagree). I also happen to get heart palpitations and have a pretty bad stutter, so that makes me question wether or not that those things could or would be associated with being beat deaf in some way

I can't clap a steady beat to save my life. People keep telling me to listen to the rhythm in songs, but I can't hear a damn thing. It's all just noise. And mostly words. Sometimes I can listen to a song for years before I realize there's a certain instrument in it. Words tend to stick right away though.
@gustano12310 жыл бұрын
It's just lack of musical (training). During my first years of piano lessons, I would always get off the beat pretty easily, so my teacher taught me to count every single time and match the count with the notes. It was hard, but now I can follow any kind of rhythm.
@Jelisawesome8 жыл бұрын
I have the same. In music class my teacher was like okay listen to this instrument and I was like wait what, I don't hear that instrument anywhere...???? I also can't dance, it seems like my legs and my torso are not attached and my body moves very weirdly trying to dance in a rhythm. On top of that, I haven't been able to keep a rhythm ever since I was born. I've tried, I've practiced. I just suck.

I need to be tested. My high school English teacher noticed my difficulty in picking up on iambic pentameters, alliteration, and dactyls. She took me to the music department head teacher and he tried having me match pitch, jump on a beat, and other stuff with notes and octaves. In the end, they both agreed I was tone deaf and attributed it to me learning simultaneously both English and Arabic as a child and that caused it because I could think in both languages since I learned both at first languages.
@maxlowthian884 Жыл бұрын
Tone deaf means you can't sing???? Having no rhythm means u can't understand rhythms not pitch. Pitch would mean you are actually deaf and can't differentiate pitches. All tonal sound will sound the same, so no you probs just have bad rhythm

You just haven't learned the notation to read sheet music. Plenty of musicians do not know how to read sheet music. Its not a needed skill but it certainly is useful.

Black people happen to have strong genes for rythm and white people happen to have strong genes for developing much of the world as we know it today. I can even do the quick feet ladder drills but I can't keep a beat whatsoever. I never danced much but a bunch of women recorded me and laughed their hearts out when I tried dancing with them. They said I was too stiff, couldn't keep a beat but it literally is very hard for me. I'd rather look dysfunctional on the dance floor I really don't care anymore. This is false. The reason is because this is talking about “natural rhythm” and not “learned rhythm” People have all sorts of senses of rhythm. It doesn’t have to be musical. In the way we walk, in the way that we talk and converse and tell a story. It all uses rhythm. When we learn to walk and talk it’s all about developing those fine and large motor skills and linguistic skills. If we literally had NO rhythm, we couldn’t walk, our words and phrases would sound very jarring and disoriented, and we couldn’t sense time, literally.
