Single player FPS don’t have the “potential” to make crazy money over time like live service. Granted it’s like hitting the lottery for a publisher to actually make a live service game like that but the big wigs only see the “potential” money they’re leaving on the table.

One thing to consider is nailing replayability in a linear FPS. I've always enjoyed the COD (most of them anyway) singleplayer campaigns the first time and get really bored quickly on round two. But then I can replay HL1 every two years and still find it stunning.

For me it's not even necessarily the "linear" aspect that is so appealing, but that these games feel authored. Like you can figuratively hear the "voice" of the designers while you're playing, and know that you're experiencing story/gameplay made with intentionality. It's like having a conversation with the makers of the game. This will date me, but it reminds me of noticing the difference between levels created by Sandy Peterson and John Romero. It's so cool that you can see that in the game.

@BBKDRAGOON Unreal tournament is in a league of its own. I feel that way about the first unreal. How your journey carries you from a wrecked ship, through temples and cities, up and down all across the planet. Few games in the genre do this anymore. It feels especially unique compared to what the genre puts out today. Some other subgenres of shooters I'd like to see return. 1. Objective based shooters like goldeneye. 2. I call them the in-between type games where you're not as fast as in a boomer shooter, but the ideas the developers bring are really creative, and they still allow you to hold your whole arsenal. 3. Games in the vain of painkiller and serious sam. 4. Games like the first F.E.A.R. Personally, I've seen enough aaa linear cinematic military shooters to last me a lifetime. I think they need to stop making them for a while. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you're going to make your fps linear. Please don't make it a straight corridor shooter. Have level design and open levels that feel like you're actually progressing. Like going from Castle wolfenstein to exploring a whole town in return to Castle wolfenstein with multiple paths around. Or the water temple in unreal. I miss more puzzle and platforming sections to complement satisfying gunplay, with a variety of unique weapons.

The triple a developers had big budgets and used them to make amazing experiences and they were revered for their work and trusted after that. The medium budget drama films, or in general just movies that aren't about superheroes and aren't a sequel or prequel in a giant multi-movie franchise. 10+ years ago we got many more mainstream video game releases every year, with higher quality of gameplay, with lower development budgets, smaller development teams, shorter development times, and the games weren't usually completely broken upon release. I feel like a lot of the great indie shooters coming out, to fill that classic shooter void, are lacking in a solid story. Sure, you could have some solid shooter mechanics, but I also crave a solid story and world to pull me in. Like Half-Life, or Halo. If the story is just "go kill" I tend to get bored, unless the gameplay is mind bogglingly good.

100% agree with you. The best games now are mostly done by indie companies, Ubisoft, EA etc just release copy paste same crap with in app purchases and fetch quest. There are exceptions. But I avoid live service games as much as possible. I tried several times to like them, but they are just shallow some how. I need the story the atmosphere, the emotional attachment like when playing Bioshock for the first time.

Great video! I sure have missed the golden era of videogames like the half-life series, we sure were spoiled compared to what we get now :( Hey what's the game at 2:09?

If what has happened to gaming happened to the movie industry, there would have been riots.

Is finished gears of war 1 ultimate last weekend on my xsx. Oof. Its still gorgeous and plays great. 8hrs of engaging gameplay and youre done. Finished the original splinter cell yesterday and that aged a little. Chaos theory is the way to go there. Im at gears 2 right now and that plays awesome as well on the newer systems. Only thing that its held back by is the huge dead zones they fixed in the later games and the ultimate edition.

While I totally agree that Half-Life is one of the greats for single-player video games, I would throw in one other game that also deserves such an honor: Metro 2033 trilogy. Now sure, it did come out after the 2000s. But it definitely carries a lot of influences from the era that preceded it. In fact, I would also argue that Metro 2033 and its sequels were the last of the great single-player FPS video games. It's one of the few video game series that I've actually finished all three games and actually take some influences in the book I'm writing.

You should play the Half Life games in VR :3 Well worth it, and you'd be surprised how well they hold up!

That’s why it pays to go back through these old games. Reliving old titles or playing them for a first time…it’s more satisfying than the hyper-monetized shite being pumped out today with garbage like skins marketed at stupid people.

I miss the fuck out of this era. I have been diving into old games recently and am almost done with Half-Life 2 Episode 2 and it has been an absolute ride. Fuck it's been so good. I have related to so much of what you've been saying in all your recent videos and fully support this journey you are on. Let me know what you think of Episode 2! I am finding it far more enjoyable than Ep 1.

FEAR 2 is great aswell, also the very first red faction was a really good game for its time with the destructible enviroment

As much as we want those types of games again, I feel they’re going to stay in the past. Studios aren’t taking enough risks to make a game stand out. There are certainly games that are new which are fantastic and we would be living under a rock to say that isn’t true, but overall as an industry, it’s staying too safe and everyone wants to copy eachother so they can keep up with the profits.

Here's why: Games are really really hard to make. High investment because a lot of quality people have to work for a long time to produce sth. like HL2. They are also highly risky. There's chance it completely flops and it might not even earn close to the initial investment. So it becomes a market where the biggest players only invest in the potentially most profitable things. Life service games are a huge gamble but with the potential of huge reoccurring revenue over many years. Developers are also less willing to put more work in than they are paid for, meaning they want either a higher share or less work/time. Add to that an absurdly overcrowded market because old games don't really go away. Add to that people less willing to spend money because they have less to spend. There's more but these are some of the points.

Unfortunately the bespoke 9-12 hour linear shooter is too expensive to make for the modern AAA industry, luckily we still see it from indies with games like Selaco and Cultic because indie's use affordable graphics styles in favour of making awesome gameplay.

What about Bright Memory: Infinite? That's an excellent narrative driven shooter that came out in 2021 and can run on a potato. Not saying you're wrong, the genre gets very few entries nowadays but new ones still come out.

Yes I miss it. I much preferred the HL style and original Far Cry where everything after 2 cannot do Open World right. I'm sick of CoD style games where it's like being in a popcorn movie where I feel I have little control.

I think the best way to put it is that back then, gaming wasn't as widespread, so greed hasn't gotten to it yet. So you'd have just these people making games passionately and prioritizing a good experience for their customers. But now, due to success, you have the CEOs who only care about the bag and couldn't give less of a shit about the games themselves as long as they have tactics designed to suck to money out of our wallets. I know it all has been said before, but yeah. Best to buy those games, you know for sure were made with us in mind, mainly indie games.
