As someone who grew up on httyd this new nine realms show feels like a spit in the face and out of all the new dragons i feel like the featherwing is the only one i can get behind but its SUCH a big changewing rip off same thing with the rest if i didn't know dreamworks made this i would think it was a cheap rip off and don't even get me started on the new main character i think my first crush ever was hiccup so i saw this annoying ass squeaky voice kid appear on screen i about started crying i think one of the things that made httyd so good was the atmosphere it didn't really feel made for kids more teenagers and adults who also watched it but you have to think the people who are going to watch this new series are the same kids, teenagers, and adults who watched the first ones so why would they make it feel like something for kids instead of what the original target audiences age is now??? i could ramble on for hours about how angry this made me but i wouldn't get anything done then

That bothered me about Dragons 3, too. Even if we restrict ourselves to the dragons and the spread of them seen and implied in the movies (so not the Boneknapper, and not the VERY large archipelago seen in Race to the Edge), getting all the dragons into the hidden world (excluding the oceanic ones anyway) would have required YEARS of going around, beating any alphas you find, and herding the flights (which I'll use as the collective term for a use of dragons) into the Hidden World. It would have needed the flash forward to be showing Hiccups' final goodbye as it would have taken at least that long to round up the last they could find. But apparently that one alpha of one group going means they are all gone. It doesn't really make sense. There's also an element of Hiccup's decision being more... symbolic than making sense in the world. Even if those particular dragons are now safe, not only are others less safe now, but why would humans EVER be ready to live with dragons if they have no experience of them?

Here is an alternative scene for thunders behavor when he first sees tom. First off all, it make total sense that Thunder would react different than Toothless, because unlike Touthless he never saw a human so he doesn't have any negativ feelings towards them. In real life, animals who encounter humans for the first time are very curious, we know that because of animal photographers trying to take photos but then beeing surrounded by wild animals like foxes who climb onto them and look and trying out all the stuff the human brought with him. The problem: thunder is not a small fox, but a very big dragon, he could literally kill tom accidently. Or what if he actually tries to bite into him to figure out if humans are a source of food. Just imagine if this actually realy happend, tom getting biten, thunder realised that humans aren't food (because different texture than fish), get spooked by tom's scream and flyes away. Tom's big character flaw would have immideatly have consequences. Of course this wouldn't stop Tom. As soon he is healed he will pack some food (so the dragon doesn't bit him again) and tries to find this mysterious creature

One of the things that irritates me most about this franchise is how they’ve botched the Night Fury’s design. Toothless’s design was at its peak in the first movie. It was sleek and aerodynamic. He was scary when he needed to be, and cute when he needed to be. He was basically a cat. His design began to degrade in the 2nd movie. He became more boxy, more “dog” like. And the… *eyebrows*. Yet he still looked decent. His design was absolutely botched by the 3rd movie though. He was a dog, full-blown dog when he was originally a cat (among many other things. I recommend watching MyUniverseInABox’s review of HTTYD 3 for a more in-depth explanation.) I didn’t think I’d get much worse… until of course they had to introduce the most horrendous Fury design, one that made the freakin’ HTTYD 3 Night Fury look amazing. Seriously, The Nine Realms’ Fury design is DISGUSTING. It is ugly and stupid and makes me want to throw it off a cliff. If you introduced that terrible mess of a design to me when I first got into HTTYD… I swear Toothless would have been my least favorite character. Seriously I want to rant for hours about this horrid example of character design ALONE, among the many other terrible dragon designs in The Nine Realms.

Everything you said was nothing but straight facts. Honestly they should have kept either the Light or Night Fury design as the base with simply recoloring it by mixing black and white, maybe even have it its become a standard pattern after so many years because some of the designs and patters on those furies were awful (never liked the weird thunderbolt on Thunder's nose, it looks lazy and unnatural in this case). I don't see why they had to go through the hassle of restructuring the face of the iconic design to make something that gives off uncanny value levels of bad design. Now the head looks more like a human-night fury hybrid instead of a Light-Night Fury hybrid.

The only thing that makes me possibly hate the design a bit less is that someone pointed out that a few of these traits that differ the Night Lights in The Nine Realms and the Night Lights, Night Furies and Light Furies from HTTYD is that they possibly came out as a result of imbreeding. Toothless is the only living Night Fury we see in the whole franchise, as far as I recall; and in the 3rd movie we only ever see 2 other Light Furies aside from Toothless' mate. Genetic bottlenecks and imbreeding can cause physical deformities, so from that angle it would make sense. Ofc, I don't think the show would ever say something like that, I doubt it was even the intent, but if you look at it from this perspective it makes the design a bit less crappy.

Another design thing that annoys me with Thunder compared to Toothless is the wings. They actually put science behind Toothless’s design. With Toothless’s the wings connecting from his upper shoulders to hips- and making his body more streamlined allows it to be more believable of how he could fly. With Thunder- who already looks inbred- his proportions would make it impossible to fly- Those tiny wings and huge chest and smaller tail and hips would make him fall out of the sky 🙃.

I think they're the children of the researchers? Who somehow, in my memory, are all single parents? Which would mean that in a realistic version, they'd likely stay with their other parent and only go to Icarus during the summer vacation or something. They could've made that work, by playing with the teens conflicting attitudes about this. One of them could be bored AF and resent their parent for dragging them there, and nag their parent to leave until they discovered the dragons. One of them could be missing their friends and not want to be part of the group, but they have to because of the dragons. And so on and so on.

Idea on how to fix that. Instead of it being "oh the eels kinda look like a snake dragon I guess" Have it be "Eels and the world serpent produce the same dragon killing poison. The eels evolved it as a way to deter dragon's and only one species of dragon was able to adapt a way to deal with the toxin." Because then it gives the two very specific traits that go beyond "eel look like big snake" that would have the dragons react in the same instinctual manner. It would also give the big snake the larger, scarier arsenal it so desperately needed

I'm working on a whole rewrite for the nine realms which is a work that no one deserves to do, it's like trying to fix a car that was completely demolished, and my biggest gripe that I'm trying to fix is the nine realms itself, first: there's not just dragons under there, there's tons of unseen underground creatures, especially fish species, the second thing is that... The underground world, the "dragon kingdom" is absolute fucking massive, or was until after a few years some entrances to other "realms" were closed, but as time went on they started reopening again thanks to whispering deaths, these tunnel systems that connect each realm extend to miles and miles and some could take literal days to travel inside, so they send in camera drones instead of people for first time expeditions (the adults find out about the realms sooner) but the most important thing is that Hiccup NEVER returned to the dragon realm, his son on the other hand decided to ditch everything to go back to the dragons since he was obsessed with knowledge to an unhealthy extent. After meeting the night/light furies in the end of the third movie, he started reading the dragonpedia books his father wrote, nonstop, he was obsessed but not in an evil way, he just wanted to know more about them, so when he reached 16 he sailed away to the edge of the world following his memory, around 16 peages of his diary is dedicated to him being stranded and being saved by a deadly nadder. Everything that the show puts hiccup as responsible in the dragon realm is actually his son's doings in the rewrite, so stuff that would (and DID) butched Hiccup's character is actually put on his son's shoulders instead, his death was so heartbreaking to the dragons the sentinels made a resting place exclusively only for him, so much so it has become pure instinct for them to just go in there, reignite the flames around his tomb and go back to their statue formation. But the most important thing is just how different the last "season"/chapter is, the world serpent is actually humongous and has been sleeping for THOUSANDS of years, around it's slumbing place, there are tons of red death and even bewilderbeast skeletons, meaning it feasted on them to go on a slumber before, and when it finally woke up, it scared the dragons to such an extent they erupted from the ground around the world like living volcanoes, since these gigantic dragons are nearly extinct, the world serpent threatens to cause the extinction of all dragons only to satiate it's own hunger before sleeping for another two hundred years, so a moral choice is given: let a whole species go extinct to preserve the last of it's kind to live, try fo feed the dragon with another thing that may satisfy it's hunger despite it being explicitly a cannibalistic dragon that only eats other dragons (presumably killing it's own kind aswell to satisfy it's own hunger) or slay the gigantic creature so it may never be a threat again.

Fun fact: In one episode of the series(I have no idea if it was Rtte or Defenders of Berk) it is shown why dragons are afraid of eels. Bevause if dragon eats Eel then the dragon gets sick and I mean...very sick and straight up insane. Typhoomerang can eat eels bscause it is not getting poisoned by them but instead gets a lot of energy

turning hiccup's monologue from HTTYD 3's closing scene literal makes it have no impact anymore, at least within the "canon". because now, according to the showrunners, he isn't reminding the audience of the importance of peace by telling us that the dragons will return when humanity is truly ready again, he's of course foreshadowing the epic and wacky adventures that tom and thunder will have! yet another one of the many reasons why this show was a mistake and why the stories that make up the franchise should have purely stayed within the viking age. at least rescue riders (the paw patrol of HTTYD) had the decency to take place in the past and, most importantly, was its own separate thing that just so happened to have the dreamworks dragons name attached to it. also the designs of the various night lights genuinely repulse me in a way that very few other character designs do (unstable fables, anyone?). I try to see creativity and effort wherever I possibly can, but I am at a loss here. I have nothing against whoever created them as they were probably overworked and/or underpaid, for the record.

I’ve had an idea for a fanfiction rewrite of this turd for a long time, but as I’m writing my own story and don’t do fanfics anymore I haven’t really done anything with it. I’ll present my idea anyway: The main character instead of Tom is a girl that kind of resembles Hiccup but not the inbred resemblance Tom has, I forgot her name but her mother is the Hiccup descendant like Tom’s mom. Here’s the major difference, her mother and her ancestors before her are actually aware of the dragon secret and are sort of secret guardians like Hiccup kind of implies his family would do at the end of movie 3 (I haven’t seen the movies in a while so my details might be rusty). The main girl wasn’t old enough to learn the secret yet, but when the fissure opens, her mother immediately rushes herself and her daughter to the fissure and briefs her daughter on why they’re going. The legend of Hiccup, the history of dragons, and that her mother worries the fissure could connect directly to the hidden world. She tells her daughter to swear she won’t tell the other kids at the facility, and her daughter, having been shown to be a bit of a mythology nerd like Jun but not as obnoxious, agrees under the condition she gets to learn even more about Hiccup and the dragons. Her mother hands her the Book of Dragons that’s been passed down through their family (not that stupid puzzle lock thing they were hiding in the hidden world for some reason) and main girl learns everything and more. I’m thinking the replacement for Jun is another mythology girl who is very intelligent and observant, and she overhears main girl talking to herself about the book. Even though main girl denies it, smart girl recognizes the book has Viking letters on it and has heard myths about dragons in that time period. To get main girl to trust her, she completely turns off her phone and puts it aside, showing main girl that she has no intentions of revealing the secret and wants to learn with her, and thus a friendship is born c: Main girl does also meet her Toothless equivalent, but instead of looking extremely inbred like Thunder, it’s a mostly white NightLight with a black nose and green eyes, showing that while the Night Fury genes are extremely diluted by now, this is still a NightLight. It’s also female and would probably not have the Light Fury’s weird sail and look more like just a white Night Fury kinda how the baby NightLights looked. Anyway that’s all the progress I have on my rewrite, I don’t want every character to just be a mirror of their dumb*ss Nine Realms counterparts and would do a lot of heavy editing to the species and human characters, but that’s the general gist. I’ve been missing Nine Realms hate videos for a year, so a 5 hour review filled only by hatred is an excellent treat 🎂 I hope this gets more views in the future Edit: The Pixelmon music is *nice* 🎶 Edit 2: AND Slime Rancher music? regarding your comment about hiccup and astrid's developing relationship being the least interesting part of RTTE because we already know the outcome; I see where you're coming from here, but I find it to be a really engaging aspect of the show due to how much progress had been made between movie 1 and 2. I myself absolutely don't consider myself to be an active shipper in general, but it's honestly just sweet to see them become closer over the many episodes that the dragons shows consist of, especially because the affection they show to one another is not obnoxious/terribly sappy. in movie 1, hiccup is the one pining after astrid, but by the end of RTTE, the roles end up reversing, yet it doesn't feel unnatural at all

might add more comments as I progress through the video, but I'd like to mention something that really puts me off. it's already an... interesting choice to give an asian character a dragon with a very distinctly asian design in a western TV show and write it as a pure coincidence. but here's the thing, this dragon is quite literally the only species in the entire franchise (that includes the movies, shorts, shows, games and even concept art) whose design was obviously inspired by asian mythology. just like you though, it isn't my place to comment on whether this is offensive to the group in question

I honestly think it's a bit annoying when I saw a few reviewers like RasorBlade or Audrie praising Alex, and saying she is the queen and best character ever and anyone who dares call her out is the bad character. Like...I get why they like her? Because she IS the least annoying of the cast and does have some good snarky lines. But in all honesty, she too has MAJOR issues and suffers from bad writing just like the others and I don't think that should be ignored.

I think the main thing that makes people cling to her and eugene is being the least unbearable and she rightfully calls out the show's bs. Overall this series accomplished nothing. It ended the way it began in a half assed manner that makes the ending of the third movie look good. In fact, if Tom never came across Thunder, nothing bad would’ve happened. It was his fault in the first place that Buzzsaw went on his villain ark that would lead to this mess. But it doesn’t matter, nothing was accomplished, literally nothing happened. Dragons and humans never reunited, they were buried in the ground again just like before. So in other words, this entire series is pointless, and it will be buried and forgotten just like all those that came before it.

the tom meeting thunder scene could've been like: (pre-scene: when the earthquake happens, either a screech is heard or a shadow is shown getting trapped, but there is no time to think as a human life is at stake) - tom goes down to fetch his downed drone. - he finds it, but also notices something werid nearby. the tail. - he goes to inspect and realises it's a live animal. for a moment he hesitates, because this is a dangerous situation and he should probably call for help, but still wanting to save this poor trapped animal asap. - he does the stupid thing, freeing it. he moves some rocks, and this lets thunder blast his way out without risking harm. - tom backs away to the edge of the cliff, but doesn't fall (showing he's trapped; he cannot run from this thing now) - thunder is freed, and he glares at tom. he has never seen a human before, so he doesn't know what to make of him. he's curious, but extremely cautious and defensive as he was just vulnerable. - tom just stares atp because there is a DRAGON in front of him. how do you even handle a dragon encounter?? do you scare it? calm it down?? - thunder slowly walks up to tom to inspect what he is. when he gets too close and either lightly touches tom/breathes too heavy at him (maybe he wants to inspect with his mouth, like a shark, to see if it's something edible) tom startles, flinching or even letting out a yelp, which makes thunder jump back and flee. establishing that he's not a monster. - tom is left watching the dragon fly off, wondering what the heck he just witnessed tadaaaa

screw it, "friendship scene" rewrite too. - tom cannot get over his encounter with the dragon. so, he plans to go on an expedition to see it again. cue him planning ahead n stuff. instead of packing VERY HUMAN junk food, he painstakingly tries to get access to uncooked meat, fish and chicken. (this man tried to feed a wild mythical animal a goddamn pizza) - enter cave scene. he makes his way down (probably not very gracefully, as he's a kid and those rocks are STEEP), maybe show a shadow lurking, watching toms every movement with careful curiosity. - tom, instead of making noise to draw out the dragon, sits down and unpacks his bag with foods. because why would the dragon approach when called? hello?? that'd scare most animals away. - a moment of silence, before blue eyes light up in the shadows of the cave. thunder sticks out his head, growling quietly, but being curious of this little creature and its offerings. - when thunder approaches the food (fish specifically), tom tries to talk to him. thunder reels back and glares at him, suspicious. - tom sits still and quiet, not wanting to spook the dragon again. thunder continues to stare at tom for a few seconds, then glances down at the fish. that dragon wants the fish!! tom takes a mental note of the dragons preference. - thunder sneaks up to the fish, snatches it, then slinks back into the shadows for safety. he eats the fish in peace there, but the blue eyes are still focusing on tom in between bites. thunder is currently assessing what tom is; a threat? a meal? neither, it seems, tom is too small and frail to hurt him, and he doesn't appear to be anything close to his usual diet. - he finishes eating. the blue eyes tilt sideways in contemplation. tom tries to talk quietly to the dragon again, and the eyes tilt again. but that's it. thunder has had enough of this for the day and lies down, eyes locked on tom. - tom realizes this is the end of the encounter and stands up. thunders eyes narrow in a silent threat, "don't come closer than that." tom acknowledges and leaves the cave. once he's outside, the dragons eyes soften again, wondering what the heck he just experienced. similar feeling, but for the other party. establishing they're in the same boat; something scary and unknown just entered their life, and while they're naturally afraid, they're also REALLY curious and want to know more. and that'd be the end of the second encounter. i imagine the whole season being dedicated to them and only them wouldn't work (for silly reasons, like marketing), but let's say 4-5 episodes. throughout this tom learns more about the things thunder likes and dislikes, and thunder lets his naturally curious nature take over more and more. thunder being friendlier than toothless makes sense, toothless HAD seen humans before and had generally bad experiences with them, but thunder had none. no negatives, no positives. so while he's cautious, he doesn't see the need to be aggressive unless provoked. he also wouldn't detect humans as a food source unless he's starved, because furies eat mainly fish. midway through this tom attempts to pet thunder, in which thunder leans back and puts distance between the two of them. "we're not close like that" but in dragon. tom accepts this and doesn't try it again (he respects animals, after all) instead of copying the scene from httyd, maybe thunder could be the one who's curious enough to initiate touch. while trying to get a closer look at this new creature, who's apparently friendly and wants to form some sort of alliance (and is too weak to really hurt him unarmed), he lets his head gently hit toms arm (or something like that), kinda to test how tom reacts. tom decides to try reaching out again, to which thunder (cautiously) lets him. pet!! they're both a bit tense, but when they realize that this is a friendly gesture, they both relax a bit. it's now established that they just want to be friends, and neither wants to bring the other harm. "test drive" scene would be at the end of the season, after the other kids have been introduced to their respective dragons. tom and thunder are seen carefully bonding throughout the season, each becoming more comfortable with each others (which lets the other dragons know it's fairly safe to interact with the kids) dreamworks i am open for hiring

The deadly spinner, better known as Webmaster is probably the most frustrating design for me because it's nearly there. It has such a compelling concept of being a spider dragon alongside being one of the best characters in the show when him and eugene share a single braincell, but then they made the design bland. Like gym bros cooking chicken and rice bland. They just gave a dragon 8 legs and called it a day, barely even ressembling a spider. Give it mandibles, an exoskeleton in spots, anything that screams spider. Love the goober. Love the character, hate the design because they were cooking then just turned off the stove for no reason.

Gave the first six episodes a shot. Didn’t like the character design nor the animation; and besides introducing the kids to their dragons, nothing of the “first season” actually hooked me. I ended up watching Audrey’s videos where she lets her option known about the series, namely the character design, and I couldn’t help but agree with her. She and Razorblade kept up with the series as they came out to rant about it, and that was the only way I stayed involved with the show without actually watching it. Everything that was ranted about didn’t look good; the series could’ve been a grand epic (which it wasn’t) but the animation and character designs were such a turn off, I couldn’t seat through it myself.

I think this show also demonstrates how NOT to do comedy. This show has comedy nearly on full blast all the time, while in the film, the comedic scenes are used to contrast the serious and important scenes from the regular ones. It also means there are more words in scenes that shouldnt have many, making it feel like a sitcomb/skit, while the movie often keeps it quiet when hiccup is getting to know toothless as it helps highlight their bond with actions. In short, this show fails at show, dont tell.

So I feel like this show had a TON of good potential and plot concepts. I generally just very much hate the models in that series. It feels like they're overly simplified just to make it easier to animate so they can shove out episodes as quickly as possible with minimal quality or time spent actually animating. I took one look at it and thought it was some AI generated nonsense. One funny statement I saw was- the Nightlights in this series are actually just genetic disasters. They're inbred- supported by the fact that if Nightfuries truly were extinct in the time of Toothless, the black-scale gene would eventually die out as the generations breed with Lightfuries over and over. In order for them to retain any black-scale genes, they would have to randomly evolve them or breed with their own relatives. Inbred probably explains the horrendous model better than whatever the show comes up with.

The show could use some work. A lot of work. That being said, I like all the new dragons and the expansion of the hidden world, and I respect that it's canon to the films and other shows. Also, I especially love the way they handled gronckles. And the glass caster being the first solely tracker species to use another sense other than smell really intrigued me. As much as the show leaves much to be desired, there are still several positive things about it, and focusing on those allowed me to enjoy most of the seasons.

In the show they say the monsters nightmare gel is fire resistant isn't it flammable and how to train your dragon so why would they put it on their armor so is the jail fire resistance or is it flammable
