I did not think I could draw. My elementary school did not teach art. I bought my daughter an online drawing course for her birthday. She was not interested, so I decided to try the course myself. I have been drawing ever since, as well as watercoloring. I was 60 years old when I took the course! I love to draw because it takes me away from any worries and time stands still. I am also proud of my paintings(most of the time).

I love the fact that there is no clear end just endless process where I can explore and play. It is keeping me sharper in my older age.

This is such a great example of MEDITATION 🧘♀️. In uni I studied biological behaviour. And we were taught in first tutorial tha meditation isn't just about sitting still and emptying the mind and breathing exercises.. but being mindful and in the moment of whatever you're doing. All the things you've said about dipping brush in and seeing brush loaded with colour, being intentional with lines, the tactical feel of pencil on paper reminded me of that tutorial. I love it.

Drawing is a challenge for me. Each drawing is a battle, that's why my drawings are the one things that really makes me happy when I manage to do them the way I want. I really feel proud of myself when I create something good. Also, through drawing, I learn to enjoy and love the world around me. For instance, learning to draw horses, for me, is the same than learning to love horses.

Hey Teoh! You've been a great inspiration and teacher and I've taken a lot of advice from your videos. I started doing watercolor painting in 2019 as a new year's resolution to "stop thinking about making art and start making art." I still sketch almost every day, but what made me decide to do what I do most--portraits--was a friend's Facebook profile picture. It was a deceptively simple, detailed portrait of the friend in question and I thought it would be nice to be able to give people gifts like that, to make them see how beautiful they are. Now, on most of my days where I have free time, I go to a Cafe and either work on portraits of my friends or sketch complete strangers and give it to them.

Really nice video, Teoh. Drawing is just a part of who I am; I've always had an aptitude for it. Like you, I enjoy the tactile feel of traditionally-made art. I guess I was 4 when I first saw Disney's "Sleeping Beauty", and I was just blown away. They had achieved something *far* beyond anything I'd seen in other animated shows in both style and believability. The early scene of first-person perspective moving me into and through the trees was stunning. Sparked by that experience, along with Sunday comics like Peanuts and my dad's old comic book collection, I've always had a love for graphic illustrations with outlines and color. I have wonderful memories for example of drawing with my other art friends in 2nd grade, and in particular the fearless abandon of composing our drawings. We would share our crayon nubs, which is mostly what we had for color. We would draw side by side, talking and sharing and showing each other the way we liked to render different things. We did many drawings; all of them and none of them were precious. We gave our drawings to each other freely and easily. Such is the joy of drawing on the near side of simplicity. As a young teen, I saw Frazetta's work for the first time on a book cover and was awestruck. Then I found his books of paintings! ...the visceral energy, the dynamic poses, the emotion, the story-brought-alive was both captivating and groundbreaking in image after image. I would do graphite studies of many of his paintings, and he inspired me to reach farther in my own art. Around the same time I began to equate an ability for a high degree of realism with being a better artist. With that came the angst, the emotions of starting a piece, the fear of ruining a good piece at the end, the comparisons and worry if I was good enough to be a "real" artist. And for the longest time, I just "couldn't" with watercolor; the idea of letting the paint flow all over, going where it wanted to? Nope. Give me a sharp graphite pencil, please. Then with the advent of hyper-realistic CGI, notably popularized in the Marvel movie franchises I intensified my fascination with artists who could skillfully replicate every minute detail, as exemplified here on YT by Marcello Barenghi and Heather Rooney (one of my favorites of Heather's is "Drawing Elephants-The Circle of Life"). And I certainly do love images like Andrew Tischler's with all of their "crispy details", particularly on his epic 6 x 8-foot paintings. But, as a dad of several children with many responsibilities, It. Was. Just. So. Hard. To. Start. A piece like that. And for a long time, I didn't. Now in my 50's, my appreciation for artists like Charles Schulz has grown tremendously. In Peanuts, I now recognize the vitality, the dynamics, the emotion, the story-brought-alive, to indeed have been captivating and groundbreaking in strip after strip. On Schulz's shoulders the great Bill Watterson gave a beautiful thing to the world in the form of a mischievous six-year-old boy and his pet tiger...and those watercolors! So in recent years, I began rediscovering the fun of putting a pen to paper without regard to perfect proportion or realism. I began to care less how the piece came out and more about the process and what I learned from it. I began to regularly go "straight to ink" and make it work with no eraser, and to let the watercolors flow. My fascination grew for the challenge of "economy of expression"; how to exclude detail and yet effectively portray a scene, how to quickly but convincingly capture a moment, how to laugh & learn when it all goes terribly wrong. Such is the joy of drawing on the far side of simplicity. I was certainly inspired in this direction by wonderful artists like Peter Draws and you, Teoh. And so I thank you. So why draw? Memory, connection, heritage, and the potential to enrich others that I will never meet through time and space are just a few of my reasons. Leonardo Da Vinci's copious illustrated journals are the ultimate example, not of the unattainable but of the possible... Let's draw!

I feel very present when I draw and, like you said, a picture says a thousand words. I often struggling with being able to express myself in words, especially my feelings so seeing an image that resonates and drawing it helps me to process, express, and communicate. Even if others do not understand a picture at first, they are usually more patient and curious to my explanation than with words, and I feel less frustrated and trapped when speaking when I have a picture beside me.

One of the best ways to get into "flow", creative writing the other :) When I can have both that's even better ^^ - that's probably why I am so drawn with writing systems that are completely different from my German one, like Japanese, Chinese, Arabic or Ancient Egyptian. I still remember when we did history classes on that and my teacher brought a list with which hieroglyphs stands for which letter in our Latin alphabet so we could learn how to write our names in them. That one was soooo much fun 🥰
@recoveringsoul7553 жыл бұрын
I had found a website a long time ago that showed the hieroglyphic alphabet, and you could put in your name and it would show you what it looked like in Hierogphys. I think they sold little pendants with that word on it, I suppose you could do any word, doesn't need to be your name. Over on the Useful Charts YT channel he's got one about the evolution of language and that's really interesting but it ends up pretty much with English, so it doesn't cover EVERY language. I think you can even get a poster.

First off, thank you for all of the time you put into your channel. It has helped me overcome a number of obstacles and issues through this last year and a half period/ through the pandemic. First and foremost I am a musician. I started drawing again after not for over 30 years because I got stuck while writing a song. I thought, maybe if I flipped gears completely and painted some thing, maybe it would get my brain flipped around and able to continue writing music! Long story short, not only did I figure out a great way to get over writing blocks, I discovered, or more so rediscovered, another form of expression that I now thoroughly enjoy and it is absolutely wonderful! So much so that I find myself most days of late going for a paintbrush or pen over an instrument! LOL! So that’s why I draw. Thank you for a great video! Those pictures you did with your daughter are really going to be prized possessions in another couple of decades for sure!👍

That was a really a great video that sums up all the reasons I love painting! Its not too dissimilar. I tried sketching a scene when I was somewhere travelling, and remembered fondly how observing my surroundings and putting it down with pencil, sent a shiver of delight and flow through me. It was a feeling I never had before, and the result was not bad even! Since then, I never really tried drawing again though. I wasn't drawn to draw (haha excuse the pun), but last year, at age 40, i picked up watercolours for the first time, and now can't stop painting flowers.

I have always liked to doodle, but only when inspiration struck me. As a little girl I loved horses so I picked up a book at the library or somewhere on how to draw horses, and taught myself how to draw them. My parents had careers in medicine and engineering, but they were both very creative always doing something artistic on the side. My dad helped me in school when I had to do a diorama and I didn't even know what it was. I was able to help my kids when they needed to do the same. My children didn't seem to have much artistic talent, although one of them seemed to enjoy creative writing and the other was good with a musical instrument, so that isn't true either. Those are art forms too. Drawing from life is a great way to remember things, like everything that you observed in order to draw that scene from life. It's a great way to capture your memory from that time, the weather, the smells, the sounds and you can look at the image later and travel back in time right to that moment, suspended in time, while you were drawing it. I tried to start a bullet journal for 2020. A strange year to be sure. But it is filled with strange pictures like murder hornets, people in masks, little graphs showing stock market crashing and unemployment rising, prisoners being let out of jail early, forest fires. all kinds of stuff they don't make stickers for. Seemed like each thing I tried to draw was a first attempt so it's not very good. But I can look at the "art" for a month and know which month it was. For February last year it was a leap year and I've always liked frogs, and doodled them somewhat. But I wanted a Leaping Frog to signify leap year and found a reference image finally and drew that. I know what it means. After awhile I started looking up flower of the month, or gemstone of the month, in addition to holidays I wasn't celebrating stuck at home but I could still draw something of that holiday. So I learned a lot, it kept me somewhat sane, and I Learned about page composition so the art pages look like they go together with the colors I picked. I also tried to grow some of my own food but that didn't turn out so well so I didn't draw that. I should have! I thought I killed my lemon tree but it is coming back to life now!

I feel as though drawing is a beauty that comes from a place of not comparing but abosrbing, I always find it interesting on what influences my art and I always enjoy just taking in the shading aspects and love detailed layers of mechanical pencils and then engaging in regular pencil, overall I think drawing is a music of balancing chaos in one hand and just taking a deep breath automatic drawing has always been a moment to be well versed and accustomed to, I've learned to copy some things and not everything and take the respect in one's appreciation in how they've approach their art

I appreciate your attempt to inspire! I think everyone should try to draw as adults and see if they were better at it than they perceived when they were young. It may lead to a satisfying hobby and hours of enjoyment. If you find that you are good, then lucky you, pursue it! However....During the early pandemic I tried very hard to learn to draw. I read books like drawing for people who don't think they can draw, Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain etc. In addition to the structured course books, I bought books with step by step, do this stroke, do that stroke examples that I could mimic. I took paid classes. I watched free classes. Didn't work for me. It became a chore and difficult to motivate myself to do because my efforts never turned into something satisfying enough to keep wanting to do it -- but I have a lot of supplies to NOT do it! and I'm still addicted to buying supplies because they are so cool. I have to actually talk myself down -- why are you buying that when you can't even draw! I hear a lot from talented artists that anyone can draw and I think what they're doing is underestimating their own talents. All young children start drawing, but I've heard between 9-13, the less talented ones drop off and find other talents. I think anyone can try to draw something semi-satisfying with a ton of effort. But if it's frustrating, they don't attempt to do so often. So don't underestimate yourself. Some people just don't have the ability to interpret spaces well enough to transfer them to paper. That is me. So yeah, by all means everyone and anyone should attempt drawing. But if you fail, don't be too mad at yourself, because not everyone can draw. Watch You Tube videos and enjoy the truly talented and embrace the hobby of supporting them!

I have drawn my whole life with any writing utensil I could get my hands on. In notebooks, on homework, back of journals, scraps of paper, post its, you name it. For me, it was the only way to focus on what my teachers and peers were saying. It got to a point where I could look back at old notebooks and remember exactly what conversation was happening around me (the doodles were more important than my notes lol!) I did it for so long that I naturally got really good at very fine repetitive lines. However, in college when I arrived in art classes and met talented people who drew perspective, bodies in motion, characters, and even comics, I got discouraged and even stopped doodling for a while. It wasn't until I took an intensive comic class (he made us draw soo much every single day) that I realize, there is no one definition of art and it's the fact that I keep drawing that matters. Nowadays, I have a goal of making my own comic someday! Thank you for this video. For me, it was a gentle reminder of why I draw.

Lovely video. Thanks for sharing. The reason I got into drawing and painting was for therapeutic reasons I suppose.

I draw to develop visual communication skills. After watching Aaron Blaise's video about sketchbooks, I finally internalized that sketchbooks can be more about capturing time from my point of view.

I like drawing because I can create my own little imaginary world with characters and reimagining the past. It takes me to a different headspace

Hello Teoh. Why draw? For all of the reasons you stated. When I sit down to draw I'm like in my own happy zone. PS I just subscribed to you channel. I know I will learn a lot from you. Thanks!

I love drawing for so many reasons, except for the times I get caught up in thinking I'm no good at it so give up, thankfully my husband is my cheerleader! I have been drawing from the age of four and I'm now sixty one and still find it calms me more than anything else. Color speaks to me, as does line and form, and I love trying different mediums to mix things up, but drawing is always my "home base". Teoh, you are so correct in saying practice and not worrying about the outcome are two must in drawing, great video as always, thank you.😊✏🖍🖌✒🎨

I've been drawing all my life sometimes more sometimes less. I use sketching as a tool ok my day job and as relaxing in the evening. I've been drawing digital alot for the past 9 years and last year I completely stopped drawing digital... I enjoy the tectile experience and the fact that something is created in the world. I also can look at my sketches from years ago and suddenly remember that day in and out side the drawing. Thanks for the amazing video!

you're perfectly right, Parka, drawing brings only positive things ! You don't see time passing, you get better quickly, you find your own style, you look better, you can share, you can sketch anytime, anywhere. You don't ruin yourself, you develop your mind and your creative mind... drawing is better than medicines ... Thank you for this nice video !! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🖌🖌🖌✏️✏️✏️

Love this video Teoh! It was so great seeing all of your sketches and hearing your thoughts. I draw because it's a better way to remember traveling than just through photos. I think of it as combining what I'm thinking along with what I'm seeing.

Love this video. I draw because I’m an architect. I couldn’t draw before i learn to draw for my university entrance exam and continued with my architecture education. Because of that i’m only skilled in drawing buildings lol. Even though i never need to do a complete rendering nowadays, I love sketching buildings and architecture details. But i struggle with scenes like people and street objects, or just objects in general, i’m still learning to get the scales right. Urban sketching inspire me to learn better my skills.

I had a struggle with my drawing skills, especially when I started to work. Work in the hospital + adult responsibilities kept me busy. I think I would draw 3-5 times a year. I was wondering if it was possible for me to revive my passion for drawing even if I am in my 30s? Seeing this video inspired me. I was reminded the joy of drawing. I have to slowly revive my drawing passion. I remember the joy I had when I made something that my mother and friends would appreciate. I also remember the fun times I had making fan arts and doing art trades. I miss drawing. The drawing session with your daughter was heartwarming.

Can can come up with daily themes to draw. And if you don't draw daily, just jot down ideas on a notebook so that you can use them later. You can draw simple things like furniture (all types), insects, cars, electronics, cups, your stationary mug, kitchen, anything. Just have a notebook of ideas.
