Yep, you lose money or break even to help a friend then they tell everyone you do cheap work. Then they want you to fix something for free next time because they sent you 10 people. Then you call them up to help you move and they are busy. I would rather do business with strangers.
@vintageG19852 ай бұрын
You can make a friend out of a customer 10 times over before you can make a customer out of a friend. I get discounts at many shops because I spent lots of money as a customer often, brought coffee/food often and even helped some shops unload their shipment containers and referred as many people as possible so I do my part to make sure the good shops stay busy so I have reliable shops to buy from. Yet friends think they deserve free to heavy discounts because they crack a few jokes years ago

@@almightyracinglol, that’s not what I’d consider “modern.” Then again, if you tell people you drive a classic mustang, then people think of some rebodied falcon from the 60s. Though I still appreciate the thought of turning one into a drift car. Is that the new hip car to focus on? It’s so easy to lose the rear end on those. Learning how to control yourself in a skid is definitely a skill worth acquiring. Drifting is an expensive hobby. So I recommend going into autocross first. That should teach you the basics of controlling a car, and has real world applications. Brakes on those are awful. Many don’t have traction control or even ABS. Instead of colliding with a moron who pulled out in front of you, instead of freezing up, you’ve trained yourself to drive around the road hazard.

I'm going to assume this shop exists to subsidise his own drifting, which is how nearly all hobbyist focused businesses start out. When I got into mountain bikes, I opened a bike shop, when I got into paintball, I added a paintball section. I did this mainly to get things at wholesale and to help out my friends. Never had an expectation of making a living at it. I ended up being the only high end bike shop in town for a good number of years and did all right but got tried of the type of customer that attracts. The type of person who can drop $9000 on a bicycle is also the type of person who's got nothing to do all day but beat you down on the price and complain about everything after the sale. He so right about the friend discount thing, everyone expects it and it is impossible to stay afloat doing that.

The key takeaway for me is the crucial importance of clear communication with customers, particularly about all associated costs. I also strongly agree with the idea of declining work outside your expertise. It's better to protect your reputation than to risk it for a quick profit.

Shops use your money to learn how to build cars/engines. They need to blow/mess up enough customers junk, to figure out how to not build cars the right way. The smart guys(con-men), close down and re-open after this. R&D on your dime! Seen it happen too many times, all talk/hype & no experience. Seen them get their claws into people and try to drain em dry. I got kicked out of one that a friend worked at, for telling a customer he don't need 4 inch dual exhaust. Nearly everything here translates to other auto Niches , Hotrod/resto shops fail under the same circumstances. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is common after taking too long, with bad estimates, and too many customers in at one time. The details of a door rubber not fitting or making a 60 year old window wind up and down like new will rob days from an estimate, but customers expect it. Too many cars get abandoned as the bill piles up or the shop cant afford to finish whats been paid for. From there its a death spiral, quality is directly related to time and if you or your customer cant afford the time then the product suffers

$130usd is insane per hour! No motorsport specialist is worth more then $90-$100aud an hour and that full wiring and fab work so roughly $60-$70usd an hour. Same as tuners who charge $1000usd for a day for a tune and finish it in 4hrs. You ain’t seeing that other half day refunded cause if they can pump 2 cars out in a day, charge 2 customers for a day each and take a day off. Or pocket an extra $500 and never return the benefits to the customers who fund the lifestyle they live. None of these dudes seem to remember that most people are lucky to make $900-$1200 a week. Insanity. Don’t @ me, you’re wrong.
