Why Dumbledore Didn't Stop Tom Riddle While He Was At Hogwarts?

Dumbledore I feel really wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Tom’s talents could have contributed extremely positively to wizard society if he didn’t choose the path he did.

tom riddle probably reminded Dumbledore of himself in a lot of ways and thats why he kept an eye on him but also made him sympathize with him

I think you nailed it here.There is only one small thing I would add,you said Dumbledore never tried to help Riddle when he was young but we dont know if thats true.Remember Dumbledore said that he was determined to keep an eye on Riddle ("for others sake as much as his own",I remember that too) but didnt he also say something like "In the initial shock of finding out what he was he felt he must have revealed too much and was very careful never to open up as much again"? That being the case there would be no way that Dumbledore COULD help him.Riddle simply wouldnt let him in,his own nature was solitary and secretive.

@@you_already_have_it Yes but I`m pretty sure Harry wasnt planning a hostile takeover of the magical world to put himself in charge or clear out the people he thought were undesirable.Of course I could be wrong......its been a while since I read the books.........I might have missed something 😝

I always put it dwn to Albus being preoccupied with dealing with Grindelwald. Dealing with such a threat, even if only from behind the scenes till 1945, would monopolize the majority of his time and efforts. Even for one such as Albus

I think he wanted to see how far Tom would go in his pursuits and whether he was being genuine with his words. Tom could've been one of the greatest minds in the wizarding world

Despite his suspicions, Dumbledore had no evidence to prove that Tom was up to no good during his time at Hogwarts or the time prior to his attempted application for DADA professor.

Tom Marvolo Riddle = I Am Lord Voldemort. Therefore, it would've been Professor Voldemort, since his new first name was I, his middle names being Am and Lord, and his last name being Voldemort. Change my mind.

One thing i wondered was why Dumbledore didn't help Hagrid's case by saying Tom Riddle was a parsualmouth? The staff knew the ledgends of the chamber of secrets, only salizar slytherin's heir could open it. And being able to talk to snakes was what made Slytherin famous. Dumbledore was the first person Tom told about being able to talk to snakes. But I guess that wasn't enough evidence.

His guilt over what happened with his sister, that lust for power for the greater good that he intentionally locked himself away from the world for. It is this that prevented him from raising his hand to stop Tom, for should he take it in his own hands especially without the proof he needed (through i suspect he assumed that tom had indeed made horcruxes when his visage had waxed into adulthood , butto assume and to be incorrect and for it to be other dark magic could have ramifications going down the wrong rabbit hole), it would be taking a step on that path of beliving once more that he knew better that he was doing it for the right reason, for the greater good. It's this that ultimately stops him, he could be close to as sure as possible but the possibility of being wrong and giving into temptation would be too far, it's vigilantism without proof, not a form he could ever subscribe to.

Why do you think Dumbledore was the one person who voldemort ever feared? Dumbledore knew a lot. He even knew more than Voldemort knew. Dumbledore was the first person that Voldemort told he could talk to snakes, which was a symbol of an ancestry of Salazar Slytherin. Dumbledore also knew it was not his job to take Riddle down. Like with Harry. Dumbledore knew Harry was a horcrux when he held him at the Dursleys. But horcruxes are not mentioned until the 6th book. Dumbledore was literally testing Harry because Dumbledore didn't know if Harry was going to be like Voldemort or actually take him down for "the greater good." And Harry came face to face with voldemort multiple times and always got away. It's funny, Voldemort feared death, and Dumbledore feared power.

Because ultimately Dumbledore’s a good man. He would’ve wanted to give Tom a chance to choose turn away from his dark destiny much like Albus himself turned away from his. And he had no real proof that Tom truly was a monster until it was too late.

He couldn't actually In the book Dumbledore says he can no longer intimidate Voldemort with his magic abilities,now that he has grown up.

Dumbledore mentioning the "rumors" he had heard to Tom never really satisfied me. Who did he hear them from? What were they saying? How are they aware of what Tom is doing? Why not just notify law enforcement to keep an eye on him? Idk I just wish there was a clearer picture of how the wizarding world was reacting to the rise of Voldemort. All we get is Dumbledore's perspective and he's not doing anything lol
