It may have been a factor, but I don't believe it was the main reason. In the books we see a memory of their first encounter. They become enemies because Snape wants to be in Slytherin and James hates Slytherin and wants to be in Gryffindor. It is heavily implied the bullying starts at this point before they even have realized they are in love with the same girl.

Snape was never a good person. Voldemort failed to understand love. Then how would he., given the circumstances of his conception and birth. He was conceived in a loveless marriage due to a love potion. His mother Merope Gaunt tricked his father, Tom Riddle Sr, into loving her and marrying her by using love potions. Had Voldemort understood love, he would have known that neither James nor Lily would be willing to let their only son be killed.

I can't help but think how Snape was always driven by selfishness. He was so eager to be the top Deatheater in Voldemort's eyes, that he didn't mind telling him a prophecy so James and Harry were out of the way for him to "have" his way to Lily. Also Snape was so delusional that he thought Lilly would find comfort in his arms after her beloved husband and beloved son were murdered at the hands of Voldemort and totally unbeknownst to her the fact that her loss was in a huge part, because of him (because I am sure that Snape would totally hide the fact he was the one who told Voldemort about the prophecy). So not only Snape was delusional in thinking that he'll have Lily all for himself once Voldemort took James and Harry out of the picture; but he was also willing (in case she ended up considering being in a relationship with Snape) to build their relationship upon deception, dark secret and lie after lie. Yeah, what he did was poetic and heroic, but he was a bad person in every fiber of his being, and his heroic acts won't ever make him good in my eyes. Never.

I think he just reported the prophecy without realizing Lily’s son was the one it was about. Remember at the time the prophecy happened Harry hadn’t been born yet so at most Snape would have known Lily was pregnant with James’ child, and that’s assuming he was able to keep track of the Potters well enough to know Lily was pregnant. It’s only when the Death Eaters were discussing whose child could fit the prophecy that Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom came up as the only 2, and then Voldemort chose Harry, that Snape realized he had fucked up and put a bullseye on his childhood friend.

Snape had an abusive father and his childhood was awful… also we must remember that this group of wizards were only about 20 yrs old , they weren’t adults with maturity and wisdom… also we don’t know what choice’s they would have made in the future eg. Snape may well have been content with loving Lilly from afar, because he knew he had pushed her away.. So please judge the characters on what is known , not on what they might do in the future..

Yeah I don't think that Snape and lily could have ever gotten together simply because they are too different as people. I mean when you think about it about the only thing the 2 of them equally loved was their love of potions and even then because of Snapes love of dark magic I would be surprised if he mainly specializes in potions that bring harm or death. While lily stayed friends with him for a very long time despite knowing how he was like, because she naively loves to see the good in people even when it is not there. It's implied that lily clearly knew what Snape was doing with his friends, going around attacking other muggleborns she knew he had joined the Death Eaters by fifth year. Him calling her what he did was nothing but the nail in the coffin the, straw that broke the camel's back, to wake her up to the reality the realityof the situation. As she said Snaoe had already chosen hus side and she as chosen hers. But snapes certainly did help Set everything in motion both the bad since he's the one that brought the prophecy to Voldemort in the first place and clearly did not care that he is condemning a baby to death. He only cared when it was lily's kid and quite frankly he didn't even really care then it's just that he knew she would not simply stand by and let her son get killed, and that was the problem. And The good since he was the catalyst to allow her to be able to set that ancient protective magic in motion. But I suppose it might not entirely be because Snape was the one that brought this good news to Voldemort why he acquiesce to his request, it might have also been because of who snake asked him to allow to live why he agreed to do it in the first place, because if I remember correctly Voldemort tried recruit Lily before but she refused. So that itself might have played a part in why he agreed to allow her to live I suppose. After all here he is running around Going along with the group pure bloods that hate Muggleborns (I really don't understand how they haven't realized that monkeyboards are clearly all the children of squibs, But then again they look down on square stool). And yet despite all that Lily's potential impresses him so much that despite her being a muggleborn he still tried to recruit her to his cause. So yeah I would say that place apart into why he might have agreed to allow her to live perhaps he did it because he was hoping that she would come to her senses and be grateful for his mercy, or perhaps he did it as a form of torture for her daring to refuse him in the first place.

While Voldemort had no real concept of love, he *_did_* understand greed, lust, envy and possession. The dark lord assumed Snape wanted Lily as a trophy/souvenir rather than genuinely caring about her as a person, which I believe is the only reason Tom was even willing to entertain such a request. Voldemort is a lot like Sauron in that despite having all the power, intelligence and cunning in the world, his inability to comprehend anything that doesn't fit his own biases leads to him constantly misreading the situation which ultimately got him killed. And in this particular instance, again just like how Sauron was completely unable to conceive the possibility of anyone wanting to destroy the One Ring, Voldemort was utterly oblivious to the idea of one of his top subordinates being emotionally compromised by some random woman on the enemy team, who was a MUGGLEBORN, no less.

But just to take this in a new direction, have you either read or watched “The Godfather”? Voldemort‘s supposedly generous offer to Lily, to watch her child be killed and save herself, actually reflects one scene from the book in which mob killer Luca Brasi “meets” his newborn child: read it, because it’s not a flattering comparison.

I disagree with this, he would have killed her at some point anyway, Voldemort is focus on the task at hand guy, he wanted Harry so that was his focus. I doubt he really would have given her a choice, and even if he did he is smart enough to know that no decent mother ever would let someone unalive their baby, so therefore his plan and intent was always to kill her. Snape is not responsible for the events in the slightest, everything is a part of a bigger prophecy, you are kinda grasping at straws.

I still stand by my statement of illusion of choice, Harry had no other realistic and logical choice other than to do exactly what he did. - had Harry ran, more of his friends would have been unalived and then sooner or later Harry would have been found, as you can’t run forever, sooner or later he will be found. Considering Harry and Voldemort minds connection, I say he would be found sooner than later - so again he really didn’t have much of a choice, and fighting him would be pointless while the snake is alive, so his choice to sacrifice is necessary, Harry knows he needs to, and he knows he will die if he tries to run. So really he had no real choice.

Voldemort was humoring Snape. He was incapable of understanding that Snape loved Lily. But he kept his word to Snape. If Lily had stepped aside and let him muder her child she could've lived for a few minutes longer. Voldemort would've killed her anyway becasue she would've been a witness and he could NOT allow that. What I don't understand is how quickly Snape arrived at the Potter house. Mere minutes after Lily died. Did he follow Voldemort? If he did follow him don't you think that Voldemort was aware of that? Snape hated the fact that Lily cared so much about the baby that she would sacrifice herself for the baby. This is where Snape shows his own lack of understanding love. Snape was obsessed with Lily and he wanted her to love only him. She shouldn't need to be friends with anyone else besides him, Snape. That is not true love. It is obsession and it is warped and narcissictic. Snape built a fantasy in his mind where he and Lily lived together and the real world didn't exist. I should pity Snape, but I don't.

Well, the protection that Lily cast on Harry is proof that Voldemort didn't intend to kill her. That kind of spell can only be cast with a needless, willing sacrifice. If she had stood by and allowed Harry's Death, Voldemort would have allowed her to live, and that's the whole crux of the series.

Of course Voldemort was going to spare Lily. That's the whole reason her sacrifice worked, but James's didn't. James was gonna die either way. Lily could have lived, but wouldn't get out of the way. She died without needing to, which is what gave Harry the protection. If it was just to die protecting someone, it would have been a WAY more common occurrence.
