Never thought I'd say this, but Eddie makes a very good point. So many people complain about AFL being fumbly in Sydney.

There is someone employed by the Major League Baseball in America to collect gritty mud and rub it over new balls so they're not so slippery and dangerous ( look this up, it's fair dinkum) so Eddie is making a sensible point.
@DeanWhipper2 жыл бұрын
It's the stupidiest thing ever isn't it. Make brand new baseballs out of the finest quality leather, then purchase very specific buckets of mud for $$$ to smear them with. Sport is truly mad the world over.

you don't need to completely change the ball, just as caro said changing the texture of the ball to be similar to an NRL ball will make a massive difference. Even in the local leagues the yellow sherrin is far more slippery in wet conditions than the red sherrin.

Hate to say it but he does have a point. Congestion comes when blokes fumble which causes more stoppages. Why use 7 freakin balls? Just use 2 or three for a match and break those balls in before a game.

I agree with Eddie, they are very slippery these days. I nearly bounced my daughters Sherrin into the plaster wall today, I bounced it to come back on the carpet and it shot off in another direction. After a few goes I got it but it is very slippery.

Don’t forget that up until the 80’s I think rugby union played with leather balls similar to ours and went to a synthetic dimpled ball to improve the spectacle. The greatest part of our only true Australian game is contested marking - why not change the balls somehow?
@Hello-qd3uy4 жыл бұрын
Yeah literally every sport has changed their ball. Soccer is synthetic now, union and league have the light and dimpled balls, basketball is now a grippier synthetic material rather than classic leather and I'm not sure but I think gridiron has gone that way too. Aussie rules is behind the times on this.
@markwarne-smith45603 жыл бұрын
Good call re the ball + 1 fix it. you could dimple the leather, would fly better as well as grip better. Having watched umpire scratch balls pre match this would be much better.

We used have Kookaburra football with ruby grip years ago but when AFL football get wet it becomes challenging to mark or grab its the design. As for gloves not many players have taken too but in cold wet conditions long sleeves were in high demand as football hit your bare arms it would sting unless wearing long sleeves jumper.

@AtTheDriveBy4 жыл бұрын
Footy is a game entrenched in traditions but the ball needs to evolve. 1. Get rid of the marketing for the game balls. Less need to maintain the leather for aesthetics, and lacquer applied. 2. Switch to a composite leather sherrin, which is softer and has a better tactile feel in the wet.

Too everyone saying that eddie maguire is making a point you are so wrong, I dont remember the last time i gave a rats ass about what he said about the game of afl and hes tryna make a point of changing the sherrin. When all it takes is getting good and putting time in to perfect your timing and positioning of marking the ball. In all those video examples they where all high pressure situations with players panicking but when u see the good players who put the time and effort in like D.Martin P.Dangerfield they dont struggle to hold the ball regurly do they.

Once any ball have been put through the mud, dew, rain its gunna be harder to handle. If ya can handle the Sherrin at top level, look at ya skills. Or rub a bit more rossin in ya hands. They've all been playing with Sherrins since under 14s. Turnovers are part of the game. Imagine players not missing a mark. You'd potentially have short punts all the way from the backs to the forwards.
