For those who like to attribute Black underperformance in schools to a lack of resources, I would ask the following question: Why is it that when Asian immigrant children, zoned to the same poorer schools that Blacks go to, do they perform extremely well? If both races are subject to the same educational institution, but one excels, the issue is not with the school. The issue is with the difference in culture. The issue is with the difference in families. Few within political circles are willing to point this out for fear of being called a racist.

@@smelltheglove2038 Being befuddled by the coursework does not immediately lead to misbehavior. Do you not think first generation Asian immigrants don't find some of the coursework bewildering? Think about all those Vietnamese refugees who came to this country not knowing any English, and how their kids, despite the language barrier, were model students. Black kids, starting out, have an advantage over those Asian immigrant kids, because they came from households that at least spoke English. Despite this educational obstacle, I rarely observed these Asian kids have conduct issues. I notice it constantly with Black kids. Again, culture matters. Asian kids are taught to be deferential to teachers

Parents need to expect more from their children. Some demographics have learned that education is not important and that’s just silly and childish. In a great educational documentary, Waiting for Superman, a black grandmother is interviewed about the education of her 4th or 5th grade grandson. Her daughter, the mom, a crack addict not in the picture. Likewise for a father, dead or in jail for years to come. She is interviewed in the study or living room portion of her apartment near the government school. In the background you see two bookcases filled with books and learning toys. After school, her grandson was in for 2 more hours of instruction and then time for completing homework and then bedtime. When asked why, she told the interviewer about the sub-standard school of her grandson and that education was going to be his way out of the toxic hood no matter what. Whether he had the best or worst teacher, she would be positioning him for a chance at qualifying for the best Jr Hi and HS to improve his chances of success. What a woman! My father's mother had to drop out at 5th grade to keep house while the rest of the family worked. She not only made her kids perform in school but whenever we visited, she would sit 5 year old me and my cousin down to play store with real money when baby sitting. What a way to begin learning to read, add, subtract and make change using boxes and canned goods.

Wow I wish my mother did that when I was an adolescent. But she came up North in the early sixties at 24 y/o from Southside VA. After her HS graduation the school integrated. She used to tell me stories how she didn’t get the proper education because of Jim Crow. She said that some Black teachers were not qualified to be teachers. So when she came up north, she was lacking basic skills.

I love Dr. Thomas Sowell. He is, of course, absolutely correct about how education has failed black people and, in that effort, have failed everyone else. With integration, all standards were lowered so no one was corrected for misspellings, grammar, and so on. Interestingly, we now have teachers who don't know how to spell correctly, use grammar correctly and more. Everyone lost when standards were lowered.

@@teenahweenah2608 I think he is implying that the “anointed” elite progressive politicians and educational leaders have because of failures to achieve “equality” of outcomes with all of their social programs that actually incentivized one parent families and enabled people to avoid personal responsibility for their actions- has utterly failed in winning the “war on poverty” and in turn contributed mightily to the decline in student testing scores and bad to abysmal math and reading levels in graduating high school seniors in most of our urban public schools. And rather than honestly and realistically evaluating many of the unintended consequences of progressive social policies and programs and looking at its failures since the 1970s (including now a strikingly high rate of single parent families with no father certainly as high among blacks -now up to 70% (vs a level below 40%, and with same trending among both latino and white low income families) the progressives just utterly refuse to accept that their ideas and programs have not only failed but made things worse-and rather than helping low income Americans get up on their own feet-have created a social welfare system that has fostered chronic dependency on govt aid across multiple generations. One can speculate that much of the money that has been spent on handouts with no accountability could have been better used on job skills training (especially trades skills) both in public schools and single parent adults with some additional training on parenting skills, personal finance management etc. Doing these things and placing a time limit on govt aid with a period of transition where such aid is gradually withdrawn and recipient is required to work and gradually reach a point of supporting themselves would restore personal responsibility. And such aid should also be available to 2 parent low income families-to encourage intact family formation. Kids of 2 parent families are much less likely to live at poverty level, less likely to join street gangs or become involved in juvenile crime, are more likely to graduate from high school and less likely to become criminals as adults and wind up in prisons. But progressive politicians like giving out freebies and don’t care about self responsibility and independence of recipients-they don’t mind the dependence on govt because they know someone in that position will keep voting them in office on their promises of more stuff and keep them in power. The timeline on the decline in our public education system (especially in urban centers) follows a parallel course with the decline in two parent families and the growth of the welfare state-as well as the growth in chronic permanent dependence on govt aid. Again, one has to look at unintended consequences even for social engineering ideas that start out with noble goals. No govt can create social utopia but it can thru misguided actions foster a tolerance and acceptance of lower moral standards and personal unaccountability. And as we have watched the decline of the core American family unit, its no surprise that our kids are failing miserably at achieving education goals (especially compared to other developed Western nations. And another mistake by “anointed” progressive leaders in public education has been the shift to focusing on college prep while at the same time removing trades skill courses in high schools. Some kids are better served educationally as well as in future job potential to learn trade skills that will make them employable as plumbers, welders, electricians, carpenters/construction, professional cooks ,etc etc. And yet progressive public educators rather than recognizing some of these things or being willing to acknowledge that social welfare programs as constructed actually disincentivize two parent families and chronic govt dependence AND at same time in so doing hamper kids by not having enough self discipline taught at home and lack of parental oversight and encouragement of kids giving their best efforts at school. But rather than being able to critically reflect on programs that seemed well intended at the start but have actually encouraged and enabled worse problems and worse outcome-progressives now insist that merit based systems and objective based grading and testing are socially unjust-hence the movement to down scale grading standards and acceptance of graduating students from high school who can barely read or do math on a 7th grade level. And worse still crazy ideas that like the notion that “math ie racist” or that performing well in school is also “racist”. So rather than focusing harder on discipline in schools, holding kids and their parents accountable, and holding the line on objective grading standards-public schools have transformed in many places into daycare for kids and just pass them along and graduate kids that cant read, write or do basic math. And even worse are those advocating for the teaching and focus on social justice activism and gender ideology while ignoring that kids are failing and struggling at the 3 R’s. Its highly unlikely that training kids to be activists is gonna enable majority of them to gain good employment and provide for themselves and their own future family as adults. And finally the importance of intact two parent families and parenting that teaches self responsibility to their children as well as places a high level of expectation on school participation and performance-is so obvious when one looks at immigrant families. its no small wonder why Asian American immigrant families now produce children that on average have the highest high school graduation rates as well as highest college entrance exam scores of all American kids. And they have achieved this in spite of still being a distinct minority of the population. Their success lies in the cultural strength of their families-many of them came here as immigrants with not much more than the clothes on their backs. The same has happened in other past and current immigrant groups. These people often realize the opportunity they have for a better life here in America and that a good public education is the key to their kids achieving more success than them. One of my best friends is a first generation American-his parents immigrated here from Greece in late 1950s speaking little to no english and came with very little money-they had no college degrees. My friends father was a very good cook and worked as one and saved enough money to start a small restaurant. And he and his wife had 4 sons-they were strong Christians (Greek Orthodox) and placed heavy emphasis on their kids doing their best in school-they were solid disciplinarians and school work came before extracurricular activities. They lived in a low income area of a large urban city-all 4 of their kids went to a public high school. Each one graduated Valedictorian of their class. The oldest (my friend that I went to college with) went on to med school and became an Anesthesiologist. The second son went to college got a business degree and then an MBA and has a successful career in business. The third son went to college and then med school also and is a successful Orthopedic Surgeon. The fourth son went to college and then onto law school and works in a large law firm.

When I was at university, I assisted a group of freshmen black students. They struggled greatly with what ‘should’ have been basic assignments. I lost track of them after that year, but never saw them on campus and I’m guessing they dropped out. They would have been much, much better off going to a junior college or a less rigorous college.

He have never been where there for me, helped me, raised me etc. Same with most of my friends. Im 39 years old. I dont know my own family or have a bond to them. They are workers. Thats there job. The kids is the states and schools responsibility because they both mom and dad work hard all day and pay tons in taxes. The modern world are cold. Many parents dont really have time to there own kids at all.

I always and I do mean always put my children first (even over the husband). I told my children and still do (ever day of their lives) how much I love them. They tell me I tell them that tooo much. I tell my grandchildren that also. My children know how much I love them. When they were little I wrote diaries for them, in case I died early, so they would know me and every thought I had about anything. (ja,ja). We still have all the diaries. You are 39 years old. It is not too late to try to build a relationship with your dad. Please make sure you let your children know how much you love them. Now, I will also let you know that I lost lots of friendships and a husband because I put my children first. But, I have NO REGRETS. God first in my life, then my children and grandchildren, then the students I taught, and lastly me. I think children are our blessings from God. I wanted each and all to know how special they are and how dear they are. So, Michael for me, you are special and dear because God has allowed us to "talk" for a little bit. I am an old lady now, and those years pass fast. Make sure your children know how special they are to you. Be blessed.

White person here - parents divorced and spent 10 years in the foster system and actually was raised by a black family for 1 1/2 years. One of the schools I went to, would have beat up on white people days and all 5 of us would leave. The one thing that really struck me about the black culture was that any black person would would try to achieve was "being white". 60 years later and nothing has really changed, in fact it seems to be worse.

Steve- I am a black American female. I am an old lady of 70 years. I am sooooo sorry you went through "beat up on white people days". I had never heard of that. I do agree with you- a lot of black people would try to achieve "being white" because they felt that standard meant a better life and out of poverty. I am an educator. I feel the problem with colleges is they do not teach students to go in and create their own businesses and think for themselves. They teach them to work for someone else. My parents were very strict with us- my mother was educated and my dad was not, but an intelligent man. They required we bring in grades over 90% and we all understood we would go to college and we did not have a choice (1960s and for my sisters 1970s). I required my own children to do their very best in whatever they chose. College is not for everyone. But, I do ask that you get a 2 year college degree. In our society, the only thng respected is a college degree. For this reason I have 5 degrees. But, I thank my parents for making sure we were educated. Be blessed, Steve.

In my opinion (and I am an educator)- The problem with colleges today is they teach folks to work for people, and not to work for themselves. People need to create and make their own businesses. In college they teach you to work on "teams" and be "team players". They do NOT teach you to work for yourself. That is my opinion. I love it when young people go out and make their own businesses. Yes, you struggle in the beginning, but IT IS YOURS. You are working for YOU. Not for the man!!!

My folks came from Cumberland, Md. My Dad had to quit school after 6th grade, my Mom got to finish 8th grade. Both came from large families, both were sent off to work. My Dad at a glass factory, Mom did housework….gave their wages to their respective families. Dad went into the Navy, served in the Pacific, WWll. Mom worked for 14 years in a textile factory. Bought their own business. They worked their behinds off. They stressed education for me. Reading in our bathroom was the 1941 edition of the Winston Dictionary. I still have it. I fear for the education of today’s kids…..they do not seem to desire to learn, or is the curriculum just garbage? Ours is a blended family, 5 kids, 14 grandkids & 3 great-grandkids, only time will tell if intelligence prevails.

Let's have paid for private education so all those peasants can't afford it and we will have easy-to-control illiterate masses. Let's put them back to religious schools so we will have a radicalized, illiterate, uneducated, easy-to-control masses. Because that's what happened before there were free public schools. For those who can afford private schools, let's have a mishmash of schools that cannot prepare our youth for the international market because standardized tests are discriminatory and racist. Yey for separation of state and education. In the meantime some ppl get rich on creating these private schools. I wish I had a Miss Smith. Education starts at home. My father was illiterate, and my mother only had two years or less of High School. Not too many resources there. My siblings and I were the first on both sides of the family to not only graduate High School, but College. The one thing my parents gave us was the knowledge that you need an education to do anything in the world. That doesn't mean you have to go to college, but even as a welder or machinist you need to know how to read and write and do math. Also, what ever you go into you need to have a passion for it. I learned that going into the Marine Corps.

We have an eighth grade graduation exam from the 1920s. It contained many detailed questions regarding the Civil War and practical questions like how far a well and an outhouse needed to be separated. It was tough. I doubt many high schoolers today could pass.

In my country we have special exams for kids in the remote areas where there are cultural and social impediments like cattle rustling. These kids once they move to safe public universities do not perform any less than their counterparts who attended private or safe public schools. Without the special exams those vulnerable kids would never have a chance at higher education. In some cases affirmative action is very important. It should a however not be over done like I saw in a certain local school where they were giving out participation trophies😅to kids that lost a football match

If we are to have equity in education it should be equity if effort from teachers and the system. That is, a little more attention to those falling behind without hindering those who are doing well, with the goal of uplifting everyone in a real sense. Not dragging those who achieve down to uplift the self-esteem of those falling behind. (And absolutely not to pad the financial reports of the Administrators like my local schools do. They move underachievers and problem students out of the general system so as to not affect the grade average they tout publicly but keep them in an underserved system so as to continue to get their funding.)

Intelligence is a matter of perspective. The lacking elements of context sometimes takes the adequate meaning of intent and creates a barrier of misinterpretation that defeats the purpose of the effort. Word soup. The difference between liberal and conservative black public figures is that even though a general consensus would have an even take on their intent one yields practical results while the other, not so much. Following the practical ends of the means as ascribed by the commentary of Thomas Sowell generally yields positive results, but leaves in its wake a broken trail of miss characterized open ended problems that can’t be rationalized away by ideological interpretation. Ivory towers stand as a testament to the power of conjecture while reality speaks to its own ends without rationalization.

The ROTE educational system is inadequate for learning. Why? There isn't enough TIME to teach the discipline of MATHEMATICS, or SCIENCE. Teachers do not have the skills necessary to teach MATHEMATICS. Therefore, the teachers engage in MATHEMATICAL GAMES, which ignore the fundamental principles.

I think that one, That the Department of Education should be disbanded and given back to the states! As far as Black students falling behind is a cultural problem. They may lose a couple of generations of students failing but this syndrome can be solved easily only if they put an effort! That solution is Nuclear family ethics! But it takes more than that! They have not do things like having certain conditions like Smoking, alcohol, drugs and cussing! Anything negative must be removed or the parents will be setting up their children Up for future failure!

Re: Mrs Simon I disagree w/ whether or not she cared about Sowell's self-esteem, fairness. If you were ignorant and uneducated you'd not have self-esteem (at least no GMA's present). As to fairness, well w/o the 3rd grade hard work Sowell would not be able to exploit the opportunity to compete when given a fair chance. Or better earned the right to by being qualified and capable. She thought about his self-esteem and what was fair, so he didn't gave to.

I find it odd. My entire family is black on BOTH sides. But we don't have any of the issues inner city black folk have. To be honest, most of the black people I know personally are middle to upper middle class. I don't know anyone on welfare. I think most black people live like me tbh.

So what is Thomas Sowell's plan to redress the pre-existing inequalities? He's pretty big on complaining how others do it, but what is his plan? Or is it just "ignore it and it will go away?" Sowell lived in a time when the National Guard had to be used to accompany a young black girl on her first day of school. Apparently he's forgotten that, or perhaps never even knew it.
