"$12,000 for a foil with a motor??? I could buy a JETSKI INSTEAD!??"
Electric hydrofoils or Efoils in short are quickly becoming the next big thing, one of the most fun ways to spend time on the water.
The fast, smooth and silent cruising over the surface gives you an amazing feeling of flying...
But the main question remains - why are they so expensive? Today we meet David Trewern from Australia, the creator of the Fliteboard to ask him the most uncomfortable questions from our followers.

Something they only briefly touched on was a stand-up jet ski. I don't think most people have experienced them, because if you did (and your a bit of a thrill junkie), then they're incredibly hard to beat. I haven't had a chance to try an efoil yet (planning a trip to take lessons in the coming spring), but I'm really curious about how the two experiences compare. I think it would be neat to see foil skis someday. I wish I had a Tony Stark garage and build one myself

People don't ask the question at a boat show because they don't want to get into an argument with a salesman. Good point but I don’t agree. The people coming to boat shows like Monaco boat show or Boot in Germany are used to yacht level prices. 12k is just a water toy to add to the yacht for most of them. I agree it’s expensive but the tech is worth it.

@Qichar

@@tombobtail7706 It is expensive, but I don't think it's unreasonable give what it actually is. I happen to know a little about the technology behind hydrofoils, which has been around for a long time. The fellow in the video is right: you really do need extremely strong materials to make this work, especially for heavier riders. And look at how tiny the propeller has to be to get you up to 40 km/h. It's an amazing technical achievement, and parts need to be hand-made. I don't doubt that if efoiling really became a thing the price would come down, but I think you really hit the nail on the head: there isn't enough demand for this product right now to make the price come down, and that's just the reality of economics. If you can't sell as many, you have to sell each one for more or simply go out of business.

You're right, it's a business and not a charity. But don't get your panties in a bunch defending a company that has little overhead and sells at niche prices. It's an electric surfboard, not a used car. Comparable parts sold online such as motors and the foils themselves cost under $1k. It's the patents they put into this that'll make it difficult for other companies to bring eFoil's to the mass market (a la FutureMotion/OneWheel's strategy). AVG salary in USA is around $30k! *shrugs* Just my two-cents.

Here's a crazy idea: Would it be possible to make an eFoil that works like an eWheel (electric unicycle/EUC)? If you put your weight forward, et moves forward, if you put it backwards, it brakes. Maybe it would be forward-facing rather than standing on it like a board. With the big advantage that both your hands would be free. You wouldn't need a remote anymore. It seemed crazy when eWheels started appearing, but they're actually shaping up to be the most efficient form factor on land, and even without using hands, you get far greater control than on something like an electric scooter.

Very interesting interview, thank you. I am following this new sport since the 1st video went out. In the next 2-3 years I will own an efoil. still today they are too expensive and once this new business segment will meet with a mass market manufacturer, pricing will go down whatever the technology. Before the Ford T, cars where exactly 55% more expensive (Fort T versus its 1st lowest competitor). Don't get me wrong I do understand that flite efoils are the "Porshe" of the efoil and may stay the high-end, hand made manufacturer....but may also become the N°1 mass manufacturer....I can predict 100% sure (i should say 100% confident) as it is economic basics, price will be cut by half in 2-3 years versus today whatever the category of efoil. All the best to the channel & Flite board :-)

@Qichar
@Qichar 2 жыл бұрын
The price WILL come down like you say, but you may be disappointed by how quickly it comes down and by how much. One problem is economy of scale and addressable market. There are not a lot of customers at this price point, and even if we cut the price in half as you suggest, $6000 for a motorized surfboard is still quite expensive. And despite what the creator says, I imagine that maintenance is not going to be cheap either. Here we are a year later, and the board still costs $12,000. If it turns out I'm wrong, and there is a huge market for this product, then of course the price will come down because competitors will attempt to make cheap knockoffs. But there is a risk with that: manufacturers who attempt to cut corners on materials may produce a product that won't last past a few rides and could lead to all sorts of problems, not least of which is injury. I really want one too, but realistically I probably won't ever buy one because I am horribly pressed for time and I have a huge list of fun things I want to do ahead of e-foiling. But that's just me: you heard from the fellow in this video that he's only sold about 1000 boards so far (as of a year ago). Also, there are currently worldwide supply / material shortages due to supply chain issues, further making things more expensive.

Everything this gentleman said makes so much sense. I feel the same way about jetskis also. I have questions about mast length. Why would I want a shorter or longer one? @JetSurfingNation

Thank you. The shorter mast is much better for learners, it's easier to start and more forgiving, you are not going to fall of the high altitude. However when you become a PRO, the short mast becomes boring and you want a longer mast to carve harder, fly higher and avoid the choppy water better.

I think it's due to the battery and the necessity. If you used maxed out the performance the battery would last half the time and you'd go twice as fast. I don't think you want to go faster that 50kph. Imagine falling at that speed? Or falling on the foil and prop at that speed. Also, they don't manufacture electric motors or speed controls so they used what's available. Also, You don't want to max out a motor so getting one that you'd be maxing out would wear it out faster. Also if you did manufacture a 5kw motor it would likely weigh so similar you'd not notice any difference.

There are "discount" efoils. One I've seen is getfoil and the reviews have been super sketchy to say the least. Everyone who has actually paid for say, a flight board, has given glowing reviews. If they're making bank as you suggest, what's stopping someone else from just doing the same thing and selling them cheaper? Agree with OP. This idea that these companies are just ripping people off is asinine. Are they paying off all the reviews too? Listen to basic economics by Thomas Sowell. Will help you avoid such simple errors.

Have you even watched the video? There is plenty of competition. But the production quality and post sale service is what makes the difference. It's very different and incorrect comparison... 3d printers similar to CD players in the past were simply overpriced due to novelty. However the technology that involves batteries etc does not get so much cheaper. Compare price of first iphone and the new one? Almost 15 years passed, almost same price. It did not become 2-3 times cheaper. It just remains in the premium niche. For efoils and jetboards the problem is it's very nichy and that's why it does not go mainstream. I have to comment that while the CO2 = climate alarmism is completely crap and Co2 is provably NOT a problem. His comment about Jet skis misses some other points - Sailing is a passion of mine that I have very little chance to do until I retire and I have no problem with people in power driven vessels. There is another problem. Jet-Ski's Apart from the noise, any idiot can get on one - often idiots do and have little thought for other swimmers, depth speed and the dangers of such a large mass at speeds, let alone the rules of the sea - you head towards another person shall you go left or right? what about a similar craft under power, slower and bigger? What are the markings of a diving buoy? Almost every user of jet ski's has no clue about any of these points. - Fuelling. I have been to so many resorts/locations where the bobbing about tourist $$$' making machine is filled by an idiot while the "Business" owners doesn't give a shit about the petrol spills that end up in the water - right about upstream from where your kids are swimming in a nice film of petrol - because some asshole with a jet ski didn't care about the actual environment! and things a spill will just blend with the water, a bit like putting out an oil fire by cooling the flames. If you are lucky, depending on fill time - the next family down stream will suffer. Jet-skis carve up the water, they are like a blender to any living organism near the surface. This means a load of jelly fish will be minced into several thousand parts that will wash up and sting you and your kids. Of course there is a chance A fin will slice one into 2 pieces when hit dead centre, but those are more easily seen and dealt with near the shore where kids swim. (I am really really tired of the CO2 climate alarm BS - industry! It's fake science where 1 part can heat 2500 parts around it and also that 190 years ago Maxwell (for example) was ignored in favour of Arrhenius. Greenhouse gas theory is old and WRONG. Don't believe me - fine - keep on being a lemming. Summary to skip the details - Titan and Saturn get about the same amount of solar energy - why is Titan COOLER despite having 8000 times more ""Dangerous/powerful"" greenhouse gas (Methane) than Saturn? PRESSURE - all gasses follow the same thermodynamic rules. 1000frolly here on you tube lays it all out - he published 3 science papers - NO rebuttal - climate alarmism - fake - corona - ww3. wake up to the game guys...please
