Today we are talking about Germany`s finest and best Noble Sweet Riesling from the Saar Valley. - One of the world`s most expensive white wines.
The wine I'm tasting with you today is the 2012 Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese from the Saar in Germany by Egon Müller.
There is no other winery that can be so undisputedly considered the "Elysium of Riesling" as the Scharzhof in the Saar Valley,
which has been owned by the Egon Müller family for five generations since 1797.
The wines of the associated Scharzhofberg can be among the most sought-after and finest crescents in the world. At every predicate level, from the subtle Kabinett and highly refined Spätlese to the rare Auslese, Beerenauslese and TBAs, these wines not only combine the most delicious fruit with delicate sweetness and the greatest possible elegance, they also fascinate with their legendary development potential, displaying an intoxicating firework of aromas and a crystal-clear, mineral play of acids even after decades of bottle aging.
The best wines of the estate are auctioned and regularly fetch top prices.
Egon Müller’s vineyard is classified as “Grosses Gewächs”, which is the German counterpart of Grand Cru.
Egon Müller also belongs to Primum Familiae Vini, (The First Families of Wine), a small group of elite, family-owned producers where he is the only German member.
Tasting Notes:
This is a very sensual Spätlese, a vibrant firework of ethereal aromas with a breathtaking spectrum of tropical fruit flavors, from mango to passion fruit to candied pineapple, accompanied by the typical Scharzhofberger herb-slate spiciness, with an erotic play of acidity and sweetness in perfect harmony, and all staged with a lightness that defies description.
All of this leads to a wonderfully long finish, you can feel the extreme complexity lurking in the background.
For me, the 2012 Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese is a work of wine art of exceptional beauty!
