I’m a guitar player, and classic guitar amplifiers are made with vacuum tubes. They’re somewhat distorted and impart a color that is half the sound of electric guitar. For 20+ years now, they’ve been trying to make digital amp simulators that sound “just like the real thing”. Whether they hit the mark is debatable, but one thing they did was “computerized”… complicated menu-driven interfaces that tried to sound like every amp ever made. But a few years back, Fender wisely started making digital copies of their classic “blackface” amps from the 1960s, some of the most enduringly popular amps ever made. And those “Tone Master” amps didn’t try to sound like every amp, didn’t have presets, didn’t have menus. They work exactly like the originals, and the sound was modeled by comparing directly to originals. I LOVE mine. I have a Fender Deluxe… except it’s reliable and lightweight.

Not going to happen. Think about it logically, you would have to have large supply of old cars in good condition and even these will need extensive work to be safe and reliable. There is a a huge variety of old vehicles so engineering kits for each is not feasible. People today in the main want safety and convenience which would be lacking in most such conversions. The issue I have with modern EVs is that they don't excite most petrolheads from their ICE cars, they look soulless and try so hard to be edgy and contemporary. A collector treats their cars like say a rare comic book, stores it away keeps it mint and only brings it out to display. A driver wants a car they can use . Because what is largely the specificities, the character of a car is her powertrain (with obviously ger proportions, her line, her running gear, her weight, etc...) I'm really not excited about this practice, however, that professionals passionate about automobiles and electric vehicles produce vehicles inspired by vehicles of the past (in Their designs), replicas, or even completely new but fair vehicles inspired by Colin Chapman's approach there I'll say a Big YES !

Just a little note: the bumpers and indicators are actually '70's pre-impact bumpers not '80's. So the looks are retro, not original. I think they are betterlooking, but theyre still not original.

I really hope conversion shops will start to proliferate. We've hung on to my wife's '98 BMW Z3, with only 41K on the odometer, simply with the hope of making it electric someday.

I have a donor vehicle, the tooling and a shop space and with all the price-gouging it will still cost $35,000 to do a conversion. A conversion to all electric should be half that. Any useful suggestions ? Thank you

What 'classic' cars would you actually want to have converted? I'd go for a Smart car with more batteries than Mercedes managed (or better ones) and remove any legacy ICE stuff they could. Maybe new, lighter panels. Possibly a classic Italian Job Mini because they're actually small. I wouldn't want an expensive conversion though, just the cheapest thing that can get me to the local city and back (which means 50 miles real world range at minimum but don't need too much more than that).
@jonevansauthor Жыл бұрын
There is no sacrilege with an old Porsche, at least, not that generation of them. This is not an Aston Martin or a Silver Ghost. Even Clarkson would always point out how awful they were in every review, then rave about how wonderful it is driving terrible cars that don't handle well because that makes it fun. But as became clear when May got on that show, he never actually knew that much about cars or engineering - as is true of anyone who raves about ICE vehicles and thinks they're better than EVs.

That car is a long hood, so it was made before 1974. It is not an eighties 911. It is a 60's or 70's 911. 80's 911's also did not have horns front in the grille. It would not have been a 3.2 liter, it would have been a 2.0 , 2.2, or a 2.7. It might even have been a 912 with a four cylinder engine. An electric repower might make sense for an early car where the engine is all but gone or missing. There were many 912's which donated their engines in the restoration of a 356's back in the day, so those would make good candidates for an electric conversion. This could be one of those cars. I have an 87 911 3.2. I think you would have to be a lunatic to repower one of those with electric motor. I get that an electric repower makes the car faster, quieter, easier to use. That is pretty much everything you can get from a more modern car of just about any type. Most family cars today have more horsepower and are easier to drive than an older 911. This has been true for many many years. I have owned my car for about 20 years. There is a saying in the air-cooled community: "It is more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow." The 911 is a car that never lets you forget you are driving it. From the smell of oil to the sewing-machine-like sound of the air cooled engine, the car rewards you as you row through the gears changing it's engine note as you pass 3K RPM to redline. You cannot help but smile as you top out third gear. So yes, electric could make my car faster, quieter, easier to drive. It only has to give up it's soul to get there.

It's no longer a classic car after an EV conversion. It's a new car with an old shell. Some imperfections are retained but many are not. By making it "more comfortable", making the improvements you destroy the "soul" of the car.

Jack complains about the weight distribution being 50/50. But drivers have long complained about the rear heavy balance of the Porsches because it gives you massive understeer that you have to manage carefully when going at speed around corners. The fact is that despite this flaw Porsches are known for their handling. But, with 50/50 weight distribution they handle even better. They are more sure footed and safer. Another thing purists moan about is ruining the car. Now this particular Porsche is bespoke. But all the classic car converters I know about make sure to mount everything to original brackets. That means the process is completely reversible. You can return it to it's original form whenever you like. So far, almost no-one who has converted a classic car has requested that it be restored (I personally haven't heard of a single case). For one thing they can actually drive their classic car every day, safely, among modern traffic. And they don't have to worry about it's woefully substandard (by today's measure) levels of pollution. Jack sums it up very neatly. You lose a little bit of personality for a whole heap of every day usability. And if you fancy a track day, it'll pants any original ICE version.

There's definitely a place for electric conversions of old classics and I'm sure my lowly 986 Boxster 2.5 would be quicker with a decent electric motor, but there's no way I'm losing the flat 6 sound track (even if I could afford to).

It is rediculous to compare your chance of a fossile fuel engine or gas catching fire in a wreck vs a lithium battery that isnt well engineered. Any rupture of the lithium battery pack will mean certain fire; exposure to the air will result in a fire. If the car is well engineered it can be as safe or safer but a battery pack provides it's own oxygen it will burn under water.

I absolutely love this! I’d order one today if I had the funds. However, this is the problem with converted classics, they are very expensive. Even for Land-Rovers and Fiat 500s, you’re looking at a minimum of £35k for a conversion, plus the cost of the vehicle. What we desperately need are new electric sports cars, coupes and pick-ups. We are crying out for EVs for car enthusiasts! SUVs, saloons and hatchbacks just don’t cut it.

Honestly, the body and other non-engine parts are still good. We should be advocating more for EV-conversions of older vehicles rather than creating new vehicles just to toss all of the gas-powered vehicles into the scrap-heap. Can probably recycle the engines anyway. Far more sustainable environmentally.

One of the biggest benefits of the Classic car EV Conversions - is not mentioned here. There is zero depreciation - if the Conversion has been done properly. I saw some stats the other day, where just about every commercially-made EV depreciates up to 38% in its first year. I'm not certain that I agree with those statistics, and feel that Tesla would be an exception.
