Just found out that Elon Musk just donated $5 million to Khan Academy. Khan really helped me learn a lot of things back in the days. I thought i wouldn't love this man any further!

Wow, I too learned a lot from Khan Academy, these days one can learn so much online. I am not so negative on formal education, it's not as good for creativity, but it is needed, those spaceX rockets weren't built by drop outs, something's from control, propulsion(I terribly dislike fluid dynamics it's very hard) and Mechanics are just things that you have to learn, there is no shortcut. Now in the area of Software it doesn't matter, the basics are too simple and the hard part can't be thought it's about strategy and creativity, so it can't be forced genuine interest is needed. But the first principles is in conflict with the idea formal education is not needed because it requires fundamental insight. The first years of school are a waste probably in his eyes, I don't know the US but here science isn't a big part of the curriculum, instead focused on doctrine. But I feel social skill are important, I lack them big time and I feel it has a bigger effect my overall abilities than anything else. The first principles was always my way of work I feel that understanding the problem is sometimes harder than the actual solution. And now as an engineering student It is definitely true, often the solution is behind some technic or algorithm, the real problem is to transform the problem into something to feed those.

@@rudrajitdey2910 I support this as a teacher myself, and just anecdotal evidence, most teachers I know support this or something similar to this. Part of the problem is a good education system is not a one size fits all, which is compounded by massive class sizes where teachers can not realistically meet individual needs of students. Schools like Ad Astra, Brightworks, Sudbury Schools, Democratic Schools and other alternative educations have their own successes and failures as well. What would be better for education is having a network of public schools each with different styles of learning, so that students can find/or be guided to the best fit for them at that time.

ikr. I went to highschool with a similar set up. After elementary I got the chance to attend a vocational school wherein we were taught subjects that are closely related to what we want to pursue in college. SO if you had chosen engineering, you'd be learning a lot of maths and sciences and absolutely no literature and Arts...in this case, Musk is doing that but even earlier. I am not so sure if it is a good idea, but I guess only the results will show.

@@rabbitazteca23 tbh I would like the kids to develop their literature and language skills too. Literature and history is just as important as a human being in society as the sciences. the irony about this "dropped out of college narrative" the examples they often use (gates and jobs) don't encourage it and sent their own kids to the best schools. they always use the handful of examples who succeeded despite dropping out, not the millions who didn't fare so well because they dropped out.

True. They excelled at a newly coming up field that one could argue didn't require years of study then. That's not the case for science fields and medical fields. Plus even tech fields, like designing requires regular college degree. And last but not the least, Elon is in a managerial/ administrative position. He employs other specialists in the field for his results.

@@arnoldjaymecomparativo711 Yeah but come on we can't even encourage that mindset further in the Philippines you can't get a normal job without going to college here even someone with the most useless degrees can get a job which proves something. The only college dropouts here are businessmen but even if you do business you got to be really creative to the point you can dropout of college. In other countries at least you can finish high school education and get a job immediately or internships unlike here most of the internships are for college students unless a high school student would agree with working in customer service. If Deped created a Grade 11-12 curriculum that employers have trust with none of this will happen and going to college would feel optional than required.

I really hope that sometime, hopefully very soon, the school systems will be reworked. In my country, Germany, we students learn so much in school which we will probably won't need later. I'd love to learn something about engineering and rocketry, but I can't learn it in school, I have to teach it myself via the internet. Like in the US, we also don't learn the "why will you need this later in life?" That means school is very unmotivating and boring, especially now during lockdown.

I'm a bit skeptical, I know that I would have avoided algebra like the plague at such a school, in the end I would have lagged basic skills. Depends on how "ability" affects the curriculum here.

I'm kinda skeptical as well because of how much projects that aren't good past the planning stage such as the Hyperloop and some youtubers made something better than Elon himself.

I’m a traditionally trained teacher, who never liked the system. When my son was born, I decided not to Send him to school. I taught him how to read and write then I encouraged him to explore . Now an adult he continues to see learning as an adventure. Not all children flourish in an unstructured environment however, we must recognise those who need an open learning experience to thrive and provide more opportunities and resources for them
